A nice balanced read on the subject here (still somewhat naive but thats what fandom is):
Michael Floyd and The Patriot Way

Quote:
In the murky moral ground of the NFL, the Patriots are a tenuous dry spot where players, if they choose, are given a length of rope. Whether they use that rope to pull themselves out of the mud or hang themselves is up to them. The Pats just provide the platform.

To me the Patriot Way as its currently interpreted by the majority of people is a largely media driven myth.

I think the true definition of the Patriot Way is found in the OTA's, training camp, the day to day practices and meetings. And in the locker room.

To me the Patriot Way is better described as simply "How Coach Bellichick wants **** done".

So sooo true:

In the murky moral ground of the NFL, the Patriots are a tenuous dry spot where players, if they choose, are given a length of rope. Whether they use that rope to pull themselves out of the mud or hang themselves is up to them. The Pats just provide the platform.

For some reason people think the patriots way means only getting squeaky clean players, when it fact its actually means that we give players (with potential) second chances (in many cases their LAST chance) when they've screwed up and they're about to be out of the league.

It's worked at times and at times it hasn't, but I think to most NFL players, it means its their last chance to shine, cuz if they don't make it here, they're not going to make it anywhere else in the league and no other team is going to give them another chance.

imo..

The patriot way:

Come in, do your job, listen to the coaches, and don't embarrass yourself, or the team. This is a fresh start, with open minds. Earn it. If you don't want to work hard, then you can leave the same way you came in.

The Patriot way is to be a grown ass adult and do your job and not cause distractions because it's all about the W.

For instance talking **** anywhere but on the field: I don't think Belichick punishes players for this because he's some moral crusader I think he punishes players for it because it's a distraction and doesn't help win games.

The Patriot Way stuff that came out of the early 2000s is fairy tale nonsense for fans.

For well over a hundred years, there have been plenty of college and, to a lesser extent, pro teams (Raiders) around who have fit the description given of the Patriots in the article ("Last Chance Saloon", etc.).

The skewed, warped, contemptuous national and local media view of the Patriots remains intact, adjusted this century from that of a losing team to a winning one, but still equally biased.

The Patriots remain, in fact, the good guys, especially in comparison with their worthless, corrupt rivals in the league. Belichick's so far ahead of his peers in this and most other respects it's not funny. And for all his naivete, Kraft is massively preferable to most other owners. There, a kind word for the holiday season.

The Patriots don't care what you did, who you were, or how you acted before you set foot in their locker room. They are willing to overlook a history of being a malcontent, or a spotty criminal record, or overall impressions that you aren't someone that any team in its right mind would touch with a thirty foot pole.
And there's the core issue. If the Cardinals told him they wouldn't stand for off field issues they had to cut him. That doesn't mean the Patriots shouldn't pick him up and say the same thing.

Maybe, "The Belichick Way" is more accurate.

Problem with Floyd is that its an alcohol addiction and no matter how many chances he gets, it won't stop until he gets real help. More than likely it seems he will go the 'Manziel' route. So in this case I think it unfortunately will not work out. Hope I'm wrong as he has serious potential to be huge for us.

From where I stand, Floyd ****ed up and he ****ed up big time, however, that was elsewhere. He's got a clean slate in Foxboro and if he ****s up here, he's gone and I won't give it more than a second's thought.

Michael, We luv you my man...You are now part of the Family. A family that has your back and will help you and resurrect your career in a huge way. The GOAT has gotten the best out of many and he will with you, bank on it....We know you can be a huge asset on our Drive For Five...Big outside, physical WR is what we are lacking and you've solved that. January in Foxboro is special and is something you'll now get to taste, we know you'll give us everything you have as you get your life and football career back to where it should be. You came to the perfect place to make that happen. Give us all you have and The GOAT and BB will give it back to you. We believe in you, I believe in you. You are in great hands now...

I think there is a Patriot Way and you hear it from the players over and over again. Do your job. Be a professional, work to get better every day. It is all about football.

Floyd has some demons he needs to face and that will happen outside football. The team like any NFL team will offer supports and his agent will too.

But here it is all about football. The drama will not be allowed to play out with the coaches or the players with the media. He will be able to focus on his work and know that is the only focus of the organization. I think that may be different than other places that drama seems to be more easily allowed in.

Sure, what did Belichick say to Blount when we picked him up from Pittsburgh? Probably something similar.
