Mayo's Coaching Staff [Discuss Coaching Candidates Here!]

It is hard for us to get anyone who wants to coach our Offense.

Would anyone have the patriots as their first choice? as their second choice?

Mayo will do the best that he can.
Patriots definitely aren’t a first choice but I don’t understand why it is completely unappealing. There is cap room to get talent, a #3 pick to get a top QB for a new offensive coordinator to work with.

Turning around the Patriots offense would be a pretty sizable boost for someone’s resume if they are going for a HC job later.

Yes, but the position coach would need to have confidence that he could step up and succeed, AND would be given the ability to make decisions that will lead to that success. Who could believe that except Josh.

Will Caley really be able to come in and make all the decisions regard the Offense? Really?

Oh sure. I remember Jim Plunkett winning with ease before going to the Raiders.....in my friggin dreams.
For the real old timers here, the Plunkett led 1971 Patriots with their 6-8 record was a very satisfying and hopeful season, coming after the 2-12 1970 disaster which gave New England the first pick in the NFL draft. Plunkett didn't succeed here, partly because poor protection, but the Fairbanks era produced teams that were both winning and entertaining (and would have won a Super Bowl if the Raiders game was not fixed by the refs) and the Berry period got us the to the Super Bowl.

If it was up to BB Brady would have been traded in 2014. Thank God we had Kraft.
Oh please. Brady was 37 that year. It was ABSOLUTELY the right thing to draft another QB. And to do a study of the fall off of old QBs for Kraft. If you weren't doing that kind of work, you were derelict in your job.

Belichick had plenty of time to trade Brady if that's what he wanted to do, and he refused and laughed at people LONG before Kraft made any intervention on Brady's contract.

Maybe he laughed at him because he knew Kraft wouldn’t let him trade him.

The reports are that Belichick was showing Kraft how QBs slipped as they entered their later 30’s. When Jimmy G was picked BB said publicly at the draft press conference "We know what Tom's age and contract situation is.” Pretty obvious BB was getting ready to move on from Tom. Beating Seattle in the SB solidified Tom remaining with the team and BB not being able to move on from him.

This has been written about multiple times by multiple reporters. Amazing that some continue to bury their heads when it comes to Kraft/Belichick/Brady
If a future Patriots GM is so lazy as to not prepare to replace a 37 year old QB, the Patriots are in big trouble.

Plenty of other teams have done exactly this. Heck, Green Bay has done it 2x!

It's a normal (and good) thing for a GM to do.

Then we have a ton of posters on this board bashing Belichick for not taking Lamar (when they had just traded Garoppolo a few months before!!!). Crazy stuff.

Any OC candidate is likely going to factor in stability both for the head coach and for themselves. Any OC who comes in here knows that first year could be a dumpster fire. Will they be given more than one to two years to turn it around?
Other than the panthers this has to be the worst situation for a new OC to come into.
That is why Mayo will likely have to scrape the bottom of the barrel for an OC

Candidates may also ve waiting for best jobs to be filled before naking their own move

Let's us presume the OC will be part of the team that chooses the free agent QB, free agent WR(s). free agent TE(s) and the top 5 QB in the draft. Would that make a difference? A 3-year comittment should be made to Mayo and his coordinators.

After all, almost all our cap money and draft capital will be used on Offense.

On Defense, we basically have a few re-signs and/or replacements and will free up $14M of cap money when we waive Jackson.

One SB appearance that was largely the result of BB joining the team.
Drew Bledsoe, Curtis Martin, Terry Glenn, Troy Brown, Bruce Armstrong, Ben Coates, Teddy Bruschi, Ty Law, Lawyer Milloy, Chris Slade

team wasn't too shabby...to bad that Parcells punted the game since he was already out the door.

They went 6-10 the year before.

Only Glenn was an improvement. Bruschi was a sub specialist like Winovich. Milloy was a rookie learning the position. Keith Byars was the 2nd biggest factor as an addition after Glenn.

But that still doesn't explain 6-10 to the Super Bowl.

I know he's old, but I hear Bill Belichick is available....

If Raheem Morris goes to Atlanta, watch out for Zac Robinson to follow as OC.

I think there is only ONE opening left with this news today and I don't think Seattle is going to want another 70 year old to helm the franchise as a replacement (though in Bill's favor he IS younger than Pete.....by a year ;)

My hope is that Vrabel also fails to find a job (which is equally dumbfounding to me, btw) Vrabel comes back to be the DC and assistant HC. He knows the defense he knows the language. It would great for both. Vrabel gets a gap year before the next HCing cycle happens and comes back to a familiar place.

THEN you add Josh Daniels as the long term OC/QB coach and you add both experience on both sides of the ball, PLUS 2 guys to help Mayo avoid the pitfalls that happen for rookie HC's and allows him to do what he does best, which would be leading the operation.

ZaC robinson most probably goes to Atlanta to coach either fields / cousins .. looks like Josh would be coming back. We don't have any better option unless Mayo goes to college ranks to draft OCs.

How about darrell bevell from Dolphins . He has been OC before and indirectly comes from the McVay tree .

the qb coach /passing game coordinator of packers also looks interesting .- Daryl Vrabel ( not related to Mike).

Josh is going to make $40 million over the next 4 years? Without working? I’d like to be in his shoes and take a few years off.
