Experienced Starter w/First Big Contract
Not interested. He might very well come here, but he's a waste of time. I'd rather just draft a QB and build around him and not waste 5 mins on anyone who will cost anymore. We aren't winning a SB next year anyways.

His contract is radioactive. The idea that there was ever a serious trade potential there for him is the province of idiot Raider homers. He has no reason to agree to a new contract that would facilitate a trade because if the Raiders keep him there's always the chance Carr gets his ACL destroyed week 1 and he gets to start again.

Unless he's willing to weaken his position in order to get a chance to start he's going to be cut.
Of course he would weaken his position to start.

Would not hate signing him but his price will be too high for Bill. Not gonna happen.

2nd Team Getting Their First Start
That’s if he doesn’t play. If he plays significant snaps, his contract is for $20 million.
I read the details of his deal... some of those bonuses are quixotic... and based on 2020 playing time and lack of wins, look slike he hit only 1 or 2 escalators, $20 million is significantly over stating the value of the deal...

but still, if we do sign him, redo his deal, bump the base salary whaile we have room, get rid of the ridiculous escalators in the deal so if its a one year deal there is no dead money to deal with...

Id feel alot better about him if he had failed on a worse team. But he had the best rb in the league and probably a much better set of wr/te than he will see here. Coaching isn’t bad either in Tennessee. So my hopes are not too high here. That all said, its better than another year of cam or most other alternatives in his price range.

To be more specific - he hits the cap for ~ $10m this near no matter what, no more no less. If he plays over 60% of the snaps, starts 12 games, and wins 11 games or less, he gets ~$8/9m more which hits the cap in 2022 because it is NLTBE. 12+ wins gets him to around a $10m hit next year.

It's not the best but the fact that the incentives hit the cap a year later means you can absorb that in a restructure if you decide to keep him. If he is a 1 year option and only does OK then the incentives screw you out of a few million. But at least you'd have a halfway decent QB on your roster ahead of free agency. Worth a 6th IMO - with a drafted QB behind him.

Marymoto's QBR and yards per game have steadily DECLINED since 2015...https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/M/MariMa01.htm

He's soft, brittle and shell shocked. I want no part of this soft melon rotting on the NEP roster...bite the bullet, draft a QB, throw him in the fire...if a total MORON like Lamary Jackson can get named MVP in his 2nd season, then one of these big game tested college guys can do the same of BETTER> Mariota is like being forced to eat three day old pea soup left out in the sun. C'mon man....

Good point man, makes total sense. He's an injury away from the easiest 18m incentives in the NFL but happy to give that up for a shot to compete for a starting job for like $5m a year because as you are well aware everyone in the NFL has the same priorities as you.

The FRG has a little ****
Dilemma I see with Mariota or any other vet stop gap QB (let's face it, no SB for Pats this season) is being able to learn the complicated Patriots playbook, which is "calculus" for the QB.

On top of that, bringing FA or rookie receivers that also have to learn all the route trees, etc., is not something likely to work effectively the 1st year.

We've seen dozens of receivers not able to grasp the playbook and that was with the GOAT under center.

Mariota + new WR/TE = TOs galore.

Paying >$10M for "maybe" a couple more wins is not worth it.

As bad as it sounds, it's probably better to bring back Cam that with a full offseason workout will be better than last year; where he was learning as he played after being thrown to the wolves. It'll be way cheaper and allow for Bill to fill the substantial holes the team has everywhere else.

Obviously need to draft a QB in 1st round, period. Need to move on from Stidham, so hopefully next guy's the guy.

On the Roster
Mariota was good 5 years ago just like Cam, its progression.

Mariota is going to have to restructure to go anywhere and it'll be on a "prove it" contract. Perfect for the Pats, sign and draft some middling QB like Ian Book.

On the Game Day Roster
Eagles?
Niners in a surprise twist?
Carolina?
Chicago?
There could be other suiters out there.
I love the idea of signing Marcus then drafting Lance or Wilson in the first or Kellen Mond in the 4th
Eagles are riding with hurts this year. No point getting mariota and getting into a controversy.

Panthers - it might make sense to stick on with teddy as opposed to getting mariota. They will draft a qb in round 1 . So ruled out.

Niners - cap constraints and Jimmy is there. Backup money for mariota makes no sense. Ruled out.

Chicago - foles vs mariota. Both are crapshoot. At least foles won a super bowl. I think they pass.

I just don't think mariota would be a starter for anyone other than us. So he might do the cam newton 1 year deal and we draft a qb high in the draft. If he signs a 1 year deal , we can be sure we are drafting qb in round 1 .

He has made plenty of money. Most people do not have the same priorities as you and are fine working to earn their money rather than sitting around hoping for a gift.
And he doesn’t have 18 million in incentives and they would not be easy to earn.

Difference is that cam newtons shoulder might be shot from all the surgeries. Mariota might still be able to throw the football.

He has zero money guaranteed except for 100k workout bonus. So if he gets traded for cheap and cut at the end of camp his options in terms of interested teams and salary at that point in time will be even more limited. It is not as one sided as a lot of the media guys make it out to be. There is some leverage for a restructure but it is clearly more difficult with a QB than with lesser players like Dola or Dwayne Allen.

That being said I guess given the lackluster interest from other teams and the Raider's cap situation it makes sense to just go at it with patience as we usually do.

Any QB drafted would most likely -- except in case of injuries, suspensions and whatnot -- be mostly redshirted at least the first year while BB and McDaniels develop him in the background. You will still need a vet QB. Ideally your vet option has some overlap with what the strength of the drafted guy are and you have continuity when it comes to skill players and their respective roles.

Cam and Mariota bring the mobile element with them even though in different ways. It makes a lot of sense to me to get Mariota and then do a minor trade up for e.g. Trey Lance. Whether any of the two will work out is different story but it makes sense on paper as the offense shouldn't shift dramatically between the vet and the rookie.
