Man in the Arena Discussion

Man Bruins fans still worship at the altar of Or and Celtics fans at the altar of Bird but Pats fans are just done with Brady who was far more important than either of them.
Huh? How is Brady more important than Bird or Orr? Under what context? Titles?

It does but unfortunately it is always behind the Helmet Catch in every list of Best Catches Ever or Greatest Super Bowl Moments.
Who cares what the world thinks? The world hates the Pats. I stopped looking for respect for this team long ago. The helmet catch was ridiculous, but it is only so revered because of who it was against that year. We know when it comes to degree of difficulty, in the biggest spot in the middle of the biggest Super Bowl comeback ever, in arguably the greatest Super Bowl ever, which catch was the greatest.

Weird, almost as if Bird retired a Celtic and Orr didn’t leave until he was washed up.

Again, Brady CHOSE to leave with gas in his tank. That was his decision, and it seems to have worked out splendidly for him. Unfortunately though, when you willingly choose to leave the region/city, you sever some of that bond with the city. Doubtful that Brady cares, and I probably wouldn’t care either if I was in that position.

Brady brought New England some great memories, and everyone will always be thankful for that. Given that he left, though, he’s not going to have the same relationship with the region as a Jeter with New York or Kobe with Los Angeles or even Ortiz with Boston; he’s just not.

While I don't agree with you here, I understand the sentiment.

Does this also apply to Jordan leaving Chicago? (No snarkiness intended, truly).

Brady is still playing. I guess we will be able to make this assessment once he has been retired for a few years.

The thing with Jeter, Ortiz and especially Kobe is that they did things to maintain the relationship once they retired. They were/are still involved in the community in a way or another. If Brady does that, the relationship will remain. If he does not, well, it will fade more.

I watched it last night. I am not bitter at Brady for leaving, nor am I bitter at Bill for letting/forcing/running him out. I find these episodes great trips down memory lane. Patriots Porn. 2007 sucked. It was like someone died. But.... Even Brady himself questioned how driven he would have been if they had reached that mountain top. Would they have 6 trophies? I kinda doubt it. I like to think that it pissed him off for the second half of his career and molded him into becoming the GOAT.

I will watch all these up until it's about him at Tampa Bay.

Now 13 years of age, Mortimer Porksley, son of Biff and Bambi Porksley, was beginning to come of age. Ever aware of his own circumstances, he has begun to worry incessantly on a day-to-day basis. One early morning, he descended down the stairs from his suite and into his mother’s room.

“Mother?”
“Yes, what is it, Mortimer?”
“I don’t want to go to school today,” Mortimer replied with tears in his eyes.

Bambi Porksley quickly cleaned the dust off the mirror, put down her glass of Dom Perignon, and wiped the tears of her own eyes. She asked Mortimer, “What is it, my special, special boy?”

“The boys at school tease me for not being allowed to play football. They call me “
‘Pork,’ squeeze my breasts together, and threaten to make coitus with them after school,” Mortimer said.
“Oh, dear,” replied Bambi.
“Mother dearest, may I please play football?”
“Now Mortimer, you know how I feel about that dreadful, BRUTISH, sport. Further, you just simply are not athletic. Your father and I did not send you to the Chestershire Auxillary Academy for sports! You are to raise your grades from a C- so you can attend the University of Virginia,” said Bambi with authority.
“Please, mother! I don’t know how much more of this I can take,” yelled Mortimer, tears beginning to run down his ample cheeks.

Bambi, beginning to see through the haze of the pain killers she snorted combined with her 6th glass of champagne before 9:00 AM could clearly tell that her hefty son was in distress. She called for his father, Biff.

“Oh Biff!” called Bambi.
“Yes, my liege?,” replied Biff.
“Do make haste and come to my room, please,” Bambi said.

As Biff arrived to Bambi’s room (they did not share the master suite, and had not made love in several years), Bambi began to tell Biff what Mortimer had shared with her.

“Well, I will not have a son of mine playing sports,” Biff growled. “If he is being bullied, I shall write the headmaster at Chestershire and inform him that thugs are tormenting Mortimer! That shall put an end to this foolishness.”

Unfortunately, that letter from Biff never arrived in time. When Mortimer arrived at school that day, the bullies, led by Lionel Drake, forced Mortimer into the bathroom, quickly overpowered him, and performed various sexual acts on him before dunking his head into an unflushed toilet. Mortimer would never tell anyone that he secretly enjoyed the acts, and closed his eyes to picture his tormentors as the head coach of the New England Patriots - William Belichick.

Still didn't answer the question...

Please, this is the same guy who called Jimmy G a motherFer over the summer. That's the real TB12. Belichick put a muzzle on him in NE, but his personality is shining through in Tampa.
I heard the quote. He was caught by surprise I wouldn't call it talking smack. Maybe he was doing that in private but that's not what I heard when that quote was said.

It was painful to relive that game but I watched it. I enjoyed having Strahan as a guest because his perspective on that Giants team was new to me. I knew they were a good road team but the insight that the team came together late in the year was interesting. A good reminder you need to trust your eyes and not just the stat sheet (I knew this year’s team was better than our record the first six weeks).

Tom doesn’t throw anyone under the bus publicly, but I really I wish we had a better RB in 2007. The Giants wouldn’t have been able to be so aggressive up front if we could make them pay for it.

That Super Bowl cemented in me that you can’t win the big dance without some adversity.

Bird and Orr are not the greatest players of all time who took formerly moribund franchises to the greatest franchise in its sport, never mind the fact that the sport is football.

He could have thrown Maroney under the bus about the opening screen pass (I think Brady was right that it would have gone for 50+ yards) but instead Brady said he was pressured and threw it badly. The replay showed that Maroney should have caught it.

I'd argue Orr is.

Bird is top 5.

If you aren't a football fan then Brady doesn't matter.

?? The idea that Bird kept his relationship to the city? Uh--he moved on after he retired (prematurely retired at that). Bird moved on to Indiana, and in fact outworked the Celtics for key players.

Brady took huge paycuts to put the Patirots where they are and he was part of the team for 20 years.

And he wouldn't have moved on at all if only the Patriots had kept him on with a 2 year contract, which he clearly earned and which he clearly would have lived up to.

Football is the most popular sport, so the fact that Rugby is my favorite has no relevance here. We're talking about public perception

Orr better than Gretzky and Lemieux. Interesting take.

Bird isn't top 5, as much as I love him. He's in the Hakeem, Bill Russell, Tim Duncan, Oscar and Wilt tier, not in the top 5 with MJ, LeBron, Kobe, Magic and Kareem.

That's interesting you can definitely put Bird top 5, but my list is in no order

MJ
Kareem
Lebron
Magic
Russell

I don’t participate much in the Gronkaneers threads anymore. Your output in those seems to be roughly 5-10x what I put in. Like I said, glass houses and stones. What’s his all time record as a HC without Brady? Remind me.

I honestly think Mortimer Porksley would let BB and Brady double penetrate him.
