Julio Jones (June 6 Update - Traded to the Titans)

Last year for about a third of the season they led the NFL in penalties, mostly the result of false starts. They also didn’t realize until they set an NFL record for fewest rushing attempts in a single game getting shellacked by the Saints late in the season that nobody can afford to become one dimensional offensively. Their three young corners, all drafted in the last two classes also came into their own finally. They were a juggernaut by seasons end, substantially better than early in the season.

It’s easier to look like a vastly improved regular season team when you finish the season with:

BYE (at 7-4)
MINN
ATL (down big a halftime, another Falcons second half collapse)
DET (terrible team missing most of their coaching staff due to COVID protocols)
ATL

Then in the playoffs:

WASHINGTON (not a real playoff team, starting their third string quarterback)

NO (little to no home-field advantage for the Saints with few fans in the stands, lead by QB who couldn’t thrown the ball more than 10 yds)

GB (held on in the second half, again on the road with no fans, benefited from an unforgivable coaching decision by Packers just before halftime and a very questionable one at the end of the game)

KC (very impressive, probably their most complete game of the year, lead by a dominating defensive performance against a porous OL)

They also were near the bottom of the league in terms of games lost to injury (starters). That rarely occurs two years in a row.

Tampa deserves to be at the top of the power rankings but, using history as a guide, in all likelihood they will not repeat and, in my opinion, calling them a nearly unbeatable juggernaut is a stretch. We are not talking about the NFL version of the 2015-2019 GSW. Add Julio to the current Patriots roster and they would have a real shot in week 4, and beyond.

I was listening to WFAN this morning on my way to work. Sal Licata is their overnight host. He’s a Falcons fan. He had someone from Atlanta radio on. Person said he expects Atlanta to trade Julio after June 1st. Thinks can only get a second for him. Would ya?
Hmm, the "trade a 2nd round pick for an aging WR" stank is heavy on this one.

I live in Scranton...
Another reason to avoid the place? :D

I like how Jakobi Meyers is forgotten...

:haha:
Interesting clickbait discussion on Curran's podcast: Did Meyers have a good season because he is actually good, or because there was no one else on the field that was above average? I hope we find he is actually good now that he has some decent players he'll need to beat out to get onto the field.

Amazing what you can do if your QB doesn't count about 63.5m against the cap over the next two years.
If only the Patriots had been legally allowed to do something like offer Brady a longer term contract extension the year before in order to avoid pesky things like a void causing cap acceleration...

Penalties weren't a problem created by opponents, the Bucs led the NFL in penalties the year prior so it was a coaching problem. I have no doubt Brady helped clean up the penalties on the O-Line by tearing into them and by them learning his cadence. It doesn't change the fact they were leading the NFL in penalties a third of the way in, they vastly improved that.

They also started running the ball after that four game stretch before the bye. Look at their playoff rushing totals. And more than simply running the ball, they also started running their offense more through their RB's passing them the ball as well. It was a better more balanced offense. When your "coach" is also your QB chances are you'll pass too often and will dismiss the pass. They became a much better and more efficient offense in the playoffs. If this doesn't carryover into the 2021 season then it will be another coaching mistake.

It's extremely difficult to go undefeated, they are the best team in the NFL until someone proves otherwise. They won because they are extraordinarily talented in every position group, the O-Line is very good and have maybe the best collection of offensive weapons in history. Their defensive tackles are the best run stopping unit in the NFL two years running and maul opposing O-Lines, their LB'ers are fast and fly around the ball, their defensive backfield has size speed and talent. They have no weakness, only injury can take them apart.

The Pats with or without Julio Jones have a good shot if Mac Jones is the real deal. With Cam they could be decent in the regular season but won't last long in the postseason.

It's amazing the fans are so clueless about the cap, they believe BB came across this money in a briefcase while he was walking along the beach this offseason or that BB could have been spending this way for the last twenty year but chose not to because he doesn't like winning.

Gilmore for Julio and a extra mid round pick.
Or Sony plus a second.

You've been listening to Felger? I thought I read the Pats are thinking Harry and a third for JJ, that sounds reasonable if the Atlantsa's on board.

Don't you think Super Bowl hangover will have an impact? Ariens isn't exactly a disciplinarian. There is a reason all previous winners brought in some new blood.
