In the dual slit experiment, it was established that even if fired through slits one photon at a time, photons will behave as if they are following a wave-like distribution when they hit a wall behind the screen with the slits. This has led to two interpretations of quantum theory:

(1) the Copenhagen interpretation, in which the wavefunction collapses to result in the particle's position (which mysteriously behaves in a wave-like way, and appears to demand conscious choice of the particle, or some guiding principle that causes the photon to "choose" to look like it's part of a wave...) and

(2) the many-worlds interpretation, in which the particle is simultaneously in all possible positions, with each resulting position resulting in one of a virtually unlimited number of universes.

In (2), it is stipulated that everything that can happen, does happen, in one world or another.
