Jason LaCanfora: Pats really want Higgins "He's going to New England"

Yeah, that's part of the problem. By that point, many of his potential suitors will have made other signings and there will be few teams still in a position to make a mega-deal for a WR in May/June. That will hurt his market which is why Higgins will be mad.
Right, but I think that’s what makes Higgins likely to agree to a mega deal with the Bengals first.

I think it gets resolved sooner. Bad move if they wait to trade him after teams have spent their cap. They’ll go all out negotiating the next two weeks and if no agreement is reached to keep him long term, they’ll give him permission to negotiate with other teams.
You don’t think they’ll just keep him for another year on the tag?

I think that’s bad business, and not how the NFL wants the tag to be used.
I think you have it backwards - trading him while on the tag is what's considered bad business. You're not supposed to tag the player unless you intend to keep him - that's why the cap dollars for the tag value come off your cap immediately even if the tag hasn't been signed. Tagging a player just to trade him is considered shady and you don't see it much.

Apparently they used/intend to use the "non-exclusive" franchise tag which means that he automatically has permission to speak to other teams.

Also for all you George Pickens haters we took a Bust over him. I had a sick feeling on that particular Draft day. One of the many reasons why BB is not on a NFL sIdelines.

That would really limit their '25 cap and they risk him sitting out.

Sounds like letting him see his open market value so they can match it or trade him. Honestly I don't see anything wrong on their side so far. Why should they just let him walk for a comp 3rd when they know there's a market to get something better?

They'll get a 2nd from someone if they can't reach a long term deal. Even pick 69 from the Pats is almost a full round better than the comp pick.

Selection #38 should do it.

So a lot of yammering here: what's the official word on Tee Higgins now??

You're looking in the wrong place for that. Try following grilledccheese37 or at least Angelo in Everett

Bro. Stay with me on this, because you can't seem to grasp it.

Eff.
That.
ENTITLED.
Prick.

He's not Randy Moss or some other disgruntled vet that is misunderstood. He's everything that's wrong with young guys coming out of the NCAA today. I don't care what his numbers are. Further, if he were already here, you'd be hating on him for not being a team guy and Vrabel would have already cleaned out the guy's locker. Find another WR to covet.

No I think they'll work out a deal where most of the money is spread out so they don't take the cap hit on it until year 3 when the cap has gone up anouther 40 million

Washington went from 4-13 in 2023 to playing in the NFC championship game one year later, but it's going to take the Patriots 3 to 5 years to compete for a Lombardi?

Is it fair to reduce their rebuild to one year? Sometimes something can be years in the making, but the results don't show until the final push.

Belichick won a Super Bowl in his second season here and had three championships after five seasons. I am not expecting that of Vrabel, but if we do not field a competitive team that makes the playoffs by Vrabel's third season, I will be disappointed.

Important to remember how many pieces already were in place. It's a firm reminder just how much of a team sport football is: a rebuild can take a few years but the results may not show until year 3 once you finally have things in place. This is where it's unique for Vrabel: it is a truly a ground-up rebuild, with a few franchise players in a few spots. Fingers crossed we get an inkling of results this year

Much like the off season before the 2001 season, they need to hit on every FA, last year's draftees have to develop into contributors and the pick at #4 needs to be an absolute stud.

It's been said on here before, but our 2014-2018 run of SB wins and appearances was entirely fueled by a string of incredible drafting from 2009-2013. After that we started having some pretty horrific drafts, but it took until 2018 for that to even start showing problems (and they still were able to squeeze a SB out of that year) and then 2019 us looking like we were limping to a a one and done in the playoffs.

Right now we are still at square one. It would take 3-4 drafts A or B level off seasons to get us back to a position where we can say "yeah we can expect a playoff run".

Not interested in more #2 WR's, we have too many. We don't need Randy Moss, but we do need someone who will draw double-teams often. Sending a speedster down deep is not good enough. The WR1 needs to be bracketed and open up opportunities for others to catch the football. We need someone who will be a clear #1 on our Patriots.
hmm

From where I sit, we don't have ANY #2 WR's.
