Jason LaCanfora: Pats really want Higgins "He's going to New England"

And not to be circular, Tom was done when AB got cut.
The Dolphins were already tampering with Brady (and he was playing along) a month before any of the Antonio Brown stuff

My proposal was 4 for Pickens their first and a third.
I would be dancing in the street for that deal.
That doesn’t work.

What would work and not be insane would be

Pittsburgh gets
#4 pick
2026 4th round pick

Patriots get
#21 pick
Pittsburghs 2026 first round pick
George Pickens

And that’s not me being a homer. That’s a fair trade

Maybe I’m overvaluing Pickens.

What would the same trade look like for Detroit’s Jameson Williams?

1) You are. You're also undervaluing pick #4.

2) It would probably work out to be about the same considering Williams is made of glass - but I would be more willing to consider moving draft capital to get him, because he's an actual game-changer.

Does Pickens's instability and being a FA in 2026 concern you?

You’d be essentially trading out of the first round, which sucks so you best be getting a first round pick back next season and maybe dropping a 6th to Detroit .

That’s a hard sell for the patriots without a massive reward.

You’d have a legit #1 receiver who wasn’t even close to the top option on his team, if healthy he’ll be a 1200 yard guy for you. But he’s never been healthy.

You’ll have two picks within 6 and probably a 20-25 pick next season

You have to weigh whatever you’ll get in the mid 20s to what you could get at 4

I don’t love Pickens to begin with.

IMO you’d also need to bring in a Goodwin or Cooper ahead of him, cross your fingers that one of those guys could play above him and help him get his head on straight.

Talent is there. There’s question if his brain is in the game. Seems like a lot of moves to make to bring him in and to justify trading a #4

Agreed. Cost control is not being factored in enough. Whoever is available at #4 is under a rookie contract for at least the next four seasons plus the fifth year team option plus the franchise tag for a sixth year if needed. Williams and Pickens are both on the final year of their deals, the difference is Williams is a first round pick therefor the Lions can (and most likely will) pick up his fifth year option and they'll have him at an affordable price for the next two seasons. He also doesn't have the attitude problem that Pickens has. And Pickens will be looking for a new contract as he's a free agent next year. I'd much rather have Williams by a considerable amount, but I also don't think Detroit is looking to move him. Pittsburgh would love to rid themselves of Pickens. I don't think we should be helping them with that. Pickens is a talented pass catcher but he's a ****ty football player (terrible attitude, doesn't block, gets no separation).

What the offense needs is to become efficient. Sustainable drives, scoring in the red zone.. effectively running the ball.. adding Deebo, slayton and say Christian kirk would help upgrade the position. I think Cincy is tagging him to work out a long term deal.
I said in another thread somewhere this morning that I'd look at something like:

Godwin OR Deebo OR Kirk + Higgins OR Kupp OR Adams OR Metcalf + Slayton

You get a solid Z/slot guy, a solid X (Kupp is not truly an X but he can do it), and a speedier guy. Cut or trade Bourne, roll with those 3 guys mentioned earlier + Pop, Boutte, Polk and Baker. Cut 1 after camp, keep 6 total.

Agreed there Ross I mentioned kirk myself and someone mentioned that he's an older WR with injury history...we can say that about basically every WR that's available.. Diggs, Deebo, kupp dor example.

With tee Higgins likely off the table... I'm thinking the team still goes after a guy..but the surest way to get the guy is by trade. Deebo was almost here last season but wolf and Lynch couldn't get the trade compensation down packed.

I'm thinking Deebo, pop, KB, Boutte, Polk and baker, kirk, slayton. Also we have the advantages of the 90 man roster heading into camp. With plus 22 million extra in cap space thinking the team goes all out to get as much talent back in Foxboro. I say go all out too it will put pressure on guys and camp will be fierce competition.

I don't think Sanu is traded for had they kept Brown (at least not for a 2nd). Gordon pulled the same stunt he did in 2018. I was against Bill brining him back in 2019 after him leaving the team like he did the previous year.
One of the worst trades in patriots his sanu.. I know he got hurt with the ankle and was never the same player. He had his best days with the Bengals. Yes Josh was phenomenal earlier in his career and was a physical specimen. But he couldn't stay on the road to sobriety. I hope he's doing well.

I figured they’d tag. If nothing else it buys you time to work out a new deal, I think you have until sometime in July to sign the tag. Also not too many teams will want to pay a bundle and flip high draft picks to do it, you can pretty much rule him out in New England.

I am guessing he will tell them to kick rocks for preventing him from finally hitting the open market, yet again, and that he refuses to sign or play on the tag. He will sit out all the way up til week 10 if needed and then only play 8 games, still get his money from the Bengals, and then hit the open market next year. The Bengals, knowing this is the eventual outcome and only getting 8 games from him on the backend won't really benefit the team much, will eventually rescind the tag or otherwise trade his rights for a (future) 3rd round pick.

I think they'll come to a deal or trade him, probably sometime after the draft.

Yeah, that's part of the problem. By that point, many of his potential suitors will have made other signings and there will be few teams still in a position to make a mega-deal for a WR in May/June. That will hurt his market which is why Higgins will be mad.

I think it gets resolved sooner. Bad move if they wait to trade him after teams have spent their cap. They’ll go all out negotiating the next two weeks and if no agreement is reached to keep him long term, they’ll give him permission to negotiate with other teams.

This lowers our chances a team like the Chargers might be willing to part with their first but we won’t part with 4, we may part with next years first.

I would move my attention to Waddle, Flowers, Jameson Williams, George Pickens, see if any of them are on the table for any price.

So a lot of yammering here: what's the official word on Tee Higgins now??

Pickens is an a-hole. Another AB in training. Not only would I not give up anything for him. I don’t want him on the team./

It ain’t Fantasy Football folks.
I would take those numbers 24/7 over what we currently have.
