I've Seen Enough of Drake Maye...

Just reacting to how he is handling this issue. Not condemning him. “Seems like” is pretty tame criticism.

Waffling already and making conflicting comments on the QBs, his entire answers about the penalties and the OL, his statement now that he doesn’t want to be a players coach.
So far his public persona sounds like a guy over his head.

Why would I have an agenda? I want him to succeed. What agenda could I possibly have against him?
I agree that Mayo has been very poor in his communication with the media which is shocking to me. He is a former player who dealt with media a lot and was always very good in interviews as a coach prior to being HC.

Stats without wins to back up the fancy numbers. A real Archie Manning
What you need to ask is what would the teams record be without that QB.

I'm cutting Mayo some slack here on the communication. We had Tuna who was the most engaging, charismatic coach with the media of all time. Then we had Pom-pom who was nice, warm and engaging. Then BB while there was a method to his approach, left the fans asking for additional insights (I was fine with it as long as they won).

I really don't care how Mayo engages with the media....as long as they win and/or play hard and are fairly mistake free in their execution.

I hear all of the arguments about preseason games being all vanilla defenses, so Maye hasn't really faced NFL defenses yet.

But Brissett faced the same vanilla defenses and looked much worse IMO, so I have no reason to expect him to be better when we flip the switch to facing intense defenses.

My take from the start has been that this year is about next and years following, with the #1 priority being the development /evaluation of Drake Maye. I personally do not care how many wins they have this year. Wins can "teach a team to win," I suppose, but they also drop you down the draft order, and given that this is at least a two-years-to-go rebuild, this team needs draft picks.

Would or could it accelerate Maye's development to start, giving him "live bullets" experience? Sure, but the problem is just that: those live bullets in the form of aggressive defenses (and any defense will be aggressive playing a rookie QB). With this O-line - unspeakably bad and if this game is any indication, poorly coached - Maye will get hurt. I doubt, given his temperament, that he will suffer the sort of PTSD psychological ruination Mac suffered, but the likelihood of physical injury is obviously high.

Mayo pays lip service to the "best player plays" ethos, but Mayo says all sorts of thing, usually followed up with a comment to the contrary )"at the same time..."), so I pay little attention to what he says. (Bill didn't give us much, but when he said something. at least he meant it.) In this case, "playing the best player" - Maye at his point - would be the wrong thing to do, would be in contradiction with what I take to be the higher priority: seeing to Maye's health and development.

If Brisset is in fact injured, i still would not start Maye. Because I don't really care about this year's record, I frankly don't much care who starts in that circumstance. The fanboy will yammer like precitable klaxons, of course, if they trot the Zapster out there. Milton is farrrrr from ready, and seems worrisomely content with his limitations. Maybe they would yank some out-of-work QB nullity off his couch. Whatever: it doesn't really matter.

Maye has demonstrated his potential, his value. If we are to realize that potential and capitalize in the medium and long term on that value, he has to sit.

Who is the villain in all this? First, there are the failures of late-career Bill Belichick, particularly his failures as GM, but also his foolish dereliction re Mac. Second (and more currently) there is the failure of the new regime to do a better job providing an O-line with at least minimal competence. That they have failed to do. The QB conundrum is a direct result of that failure, and is the reason Drake Maye's development will have to be backburnered for the time being.
One of my multiple pet peeves regarding acquiring talent over the last 5 years (but actually longer), is how we've not acquired and developed a true and solid Center to step in if Andrews got injured, or what we have now (an Andrews that even if he stays healthy has just maybe one season left after this). Andrews was an UDFA and has been solid since he became the starter. Not only will we need a Stud LT in the off-season, but also a Center and LG (and that's hoping that Wallace becomes the answer at RT). I've been truly impressed with Maye's progress. He gives me the impression of not just being a Legit #QB, but has true Franchise QB potential. However, if the OL isn't addressed by next off-season, the kid is going to metaphorically get killed. I like what I've seen from Douglas and Polk (and Baker has legit talent, but just needs to get seasoning). We'll be drafting very high next year and there will be FA's who will still be in their Mid-20's (especially on Defense), which is how we could fill some holes, especially on the DL. There will also be at least one young swing tackle type (Walker Little), and maybe another we can nab. Let's just use this season to see which young players are worth bringing along to rebuild the franchise. I know that's not what some fans want to hear, but it's just being realistic.

What you need to ask is what would the teams record be without that QB.
No, I don't. It is quite literally what it is.

There is no need to strawman it, to play the "what about game".

I mean, you say what if it was Zach Wilson... i say what if it was Mahomes... pointless exercise.

True but it might also indicate how much worse the OLine could be in 10 days.

The title sounds kinda negative lol

The way the whiny ass ******** has been flying around here it's hard to find fault with that assessment

Last night during his presser Mayo said Drake was the #2. Then this morning he says Maye has out played Brissett. Sound like he may not know who to name the starter.
Mayo is not impressing me.

BB is a tough act to follow, and the team is not overloaded with talent, but this is a tough gig to learn on the job.

That argument has no logic behind it, now we are suggesting the QB is solely responsible for a W-L record?
Mahomes played his rookie year he probably wins them a Super Bowl, so yeah glad he sat too.

We could go full whataboutism until the cows come home. There are many ways to look at it but I'm willing to bet that if you do a comprehensive analysis, statistically or otherwise, it's going to show that its better, career-wise, to sit a rookie QB than to throw him in to sink or swim.

Been loving what I have see so far. Confidence looks great but need to see him in a real game to see if he loses the swagger (like Mac) or he’s a natural. I’m thinking he’s a natural but can’t say Im never wrong. The “bad” things I saw I should t really call bad, but I think his game can and will be cleaned up with reps. Timing needs reps to get better. Now question is do we squander his reps and have him ride pine, or put him out there and watch him possibly get killed. Personally I think us as fans are over worrying a bit about him being killed. OL needs to gel a little before it happens. I’d say week 3 play him.

Mayo says all sorts of things, usually followed up, often in the same sentence, with a contradictory remark. So what he says means little. At least when Bill had nothing to say, he said nothing, or snorted.

The full quote explains how he will justify Jacoby starting:

"What I will say is this is a true competition and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby. Now, in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up, but those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple days.”
He needs to understand the microphones surround him because he's the HC of the NEP. Not because people are desperate for endless streams of Jerod Mayo word soup.

When he drops back the field seems to open up for him, like it does for great QB's.
