I've Seen Enough of Drake Maye...

Mayo says all sorts of things, usually followed up, often in the same sentence, with a contradictory remark. So what he says means little. At least when Bill had nothing to say, he said nothing, or snorted.

My take from the start has been that this year is about next and years following, with the #1 priority being the development /evaluation of Drake Maye. I personally do not care how many wins they have this year. Wins can "teach a team to win," I suppose, but they also drop you down the draft order, and given that this is at least a two-years-to-go rebuild, this team needs draft picks.

Would or could it accelerate Maye's development to start, giving him "live bullets" experience? Sure, but the problem is just that: those live bullets in the form of aggressive defenses (and any defense will be aggressive playing a rookie QB). With this O-line - unspeakably bad and if this game is any indication, poorly coached - Maye will get hurt. I doubt, given his temperament, that he will suffer the sort of PTSD psychological ruination Mac suffered, but the likelihood of physical injury is obviously high.

Mayo pays lip service to the "best player plays" ethos, but Mayo says all sorts of thing, usually followed up with a comment to the contrary )"at the same time..."), so I pay little attention to what he says. (Bill didn't give us much, but when he said something. at least he meant it.) In this case, "playing the best player" - Maye at his point - would be the wrong thing to do, would be in contradiction with what I take to be the higher priority: seeing to Maye's health and development.

If Brisset is in fact injured, i still would not start Maye. Because I don't really care about this year's record, I frankly don't much care who starts in that circumstance. The fanboy will yammer like precitable klaxons, of course, if they trot the Zapster out there. Milton is farrrrr from ready, and seems worrisomely content with his limitations. Maybe they would yank some out-of-work QB nullity off his couch. Whatever: it doesn't really matter.

Maye has demonstrated his potential, his value. If we are to realize that potential and capitalize in the medium and long term on that value, he has to sit.

Who is the villain in all this? First, there are the failures of late-career Bill Belichick, particularly his failures as GM, but also his foolish dereliction re Mac. Second (and more currently) there is the failure of the new regime to do a better job providing an O-line with at least minimal competence. That they have failed to do. The QB conundrum is a direct result of that failure, and is the reason Drake Maye's development will have to be backburnered for the time being.
Sorry I'm with the Play him NOW generation I don't want him sit and wait behind a inferior player like Biscuit.

I understand the impulse and might yield to it if the space behind this o-line were not such a hazardous place. As I said in my post, it would typically be the logical next step to work him into a starting role, a role in which his development would likely be accelerated, but not behind this line, with receiver swho take this long to get open, if they ever do.

I really wanted us to retain Trent Brown last FA I was hoping him and Mayo had a good relationship. We would be in a better place with him right now.

Wolf should be making calls to upgrade the line immediately so Maye doesn’t waste time on the sideline.

The blindside hit on Brissett was just a preview of what’s to come.

I agree that the jury is very much out on Mac, and that his limitations of Moxie and arm strength may prevent his ever being a "franchise quarterback," but his failure here was ensured by Bill's asinine and childish attitude towards him and his fireable dereliction in providing obviously incompetent coaching and a lousy surrounding roster. Bill and Mac both are at fault, but in my mind, Bill's was the less forgivable failure, because it was so self-indulgently irresponsible, and because he ought to have known better than to be such an ass about it all.

I wish Mac well. His preseason has been quite good, offering at least a glimpse of a prospect of future success for him.
You're underestimating how bad Mac is and was.

Me too stater I almost broke mine and didn't cry like a byaaach!
I did break mine. And torn the ligaments too. Playing outfield in softball. The only thing I'm going to say is don't bring a water bottle to the outfield on an excruciatingly hot day.

Ouch!

What a Fat Blob Onwenu is he was so clueless on that play and we are paying him like a RT.

The real reason to start him now is the get the mistakes behind him and grow his experience to accelerate his development.
He would be better in his first game if you wait to play him. But he will be better in that game, whenever it is, if you start him now.
If you start him now he may die before that game

Yep. We probably would, which is testament not so much to Brown's merits as to just how desperately bad it all is. A least when Brown was in the mood to play, he was a legit, serviceable lineman. As bad as the o-line is, it will take next year's draft to really make progress in correcting it, which means that this year's QB will be at elevated risk of injury on every passing play, and passing downs will be abundant, given this o-line isn't much better at run-blocking than they are at pass protection. If the line can't protect Maye, the coaches will have to, and to this point it seems the only way to accomplish that this year is to keep him on the bench. It's too bad, but - yessir - it is what it is.

I just watched it again. It looks like Owenu was the only one channeling Madden AI and went rogue which caused the rest to start bumping into each other.

Yeah I remember those terrible Patriots Teams before Bledsoe this Team is looking like one of those. We just have to run even if we are not going anywhere to keep the Defense honest. Terrible FO move knowing we were going to Draft a Young QB.

Owenu Needs to go back top RG if that's how he's going to play RT his play was uninspiring and horrible. And the knock on Trent Brown was that he's lazy Onwenu couldn't look any lazier. Your Madden OL AI reference was spot on so frustrating.

Very interesting to hear mayo say that, how will he justify brissett starting if hes named starter? There was the whole ‘drake should sit and learn from what we see defenses do in real games’ excuse but didn’t he say the better qb will be starting? (I could be imagining this)

I don’t think id prefer it but id be okay if they want to start maye. Plenty qbs have gotten their arse kicked year 1 and bounced back. The key is you don’t want it to be a multi year thing like with Luck

With their First Pick in 2025 NFL Draft the N.E. Patriots Selects Offensive Tackle Blah blah blah that's for certain.

The full quote explains how he will justify Jacoby starting:

"What I will say is this is a true competition and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby. Now, in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up, but those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple days.”

Okay, makes sense. Guess it would be pretty tough for him not to say maye is not outplaying jacoby right now
