Drake Maye appreciation thread

No question Maye has been much better, faster than most anticipated with such a bad roster. Hopes are high for '25.

However, his accuracy has been the one area he needs quite a bit of improvement.
He has missed several throws in each game (like the would-be TD to Henry that got picked and cost the game)
He mostly misses the intermediate crossing patterns - often behind the receiver.

This can be improved, and is one of the few things young QB's can easily correct with a good offseason.
That, and more ability (experience) to finesse OL protection &/or audible out of bad run plays will put him on the path to top 10 QB.
If he stays healthy and even works on his body to get stronger without loosing any speed, quickness, and agility (and they give him a solid OL and some weapons next year and just keep building on that), he could be a Top 5 QB in just his 2nd Season (perhaps better).

On advanced stats He has been one of the most accurate in the NFL. He was #1 in the NFL on accuracy after the Rams game and not have not seen updated numbers, but he was the most accurate of all QB's this past week. The Hunter throw was not accuracy he threw it exactly where he intended to. The one throw to Boutte was the only really inaccurate throw of the day and not clear if he was throwing that away on purpose. He was 95% plus accurate

Most of his missed throws is when him and the receiver are not on the same page, other than the Henry play, which still should have been caught, it's been the receiver that has been wrong.

Not sure how people are saying he needs to improve accuracy that is at the top of the NFL.

I get it though, he's so great at everything it's almost impossible to find areas he needs to improve on because he's already playing at top 3 NFL QB level 8 games into his career at age 22. This is why he was the best QB prospect in the last decade when he came out.

This data is a paid service so unless someone posts it on social media can't see the current numbers but he was down in Miami probably and up against Indy so he's still near the top.

I just pray (literally) that he makes it through this season completely healthy.
If you look at it all and all this season was actually a success! We got our QB he is a stud and I even went as far as saying he's a top 10 QB right now! Everyone is taking notice of him nationally. I never expected us to be a playoff team this season. The season was all about Drake maye! Now we have a top 5 pick and plenty of cap space. The pressure isn't on Mayo the pressure is on the GM to get the talent around Drake for him to success and bring the franchise back to being a contender.

@upstater1 Pickens is a very accomplished Contested football catcher. Pickens attacks the football in the air very few CBs get that 50/50 Ball. He needs a QB we Need Receivers I would call the Patriots and George Pickens a perfect match.
Pittsburgh is a WR factory. I trust anyone they draft at WR. I'll gladly take Pickens!

Regarding Drake Maye accuracy percentage: he has nowhere near the Fraction of Wide Receivers his contemporaries are throwing to.

That is a great point and just makes it even more amazing how accurate he has been. Have been SO impressed with him considering what he has to work with. Please stay healthy Drake.

Can't disagree with Maye's completion success.
Can point out Maye has been serving up some brutal hospital balls, notably to Henry who I'm surprised is still standing given the beating he has taken over multiple games with late throws in the kill zone.

I'm just leery of Wolf/Groh Jr. and I never wanted Mayo as HC (he simply didn't have the credentials nor deserve to be made HC at this time in any respect).

Every QB throw hospital balls to Good TE's that's why it is good to have Two good ones.

What's interesting is that at this time in '21, most of us were feeling really good about Mac. He was the best looking and more winning rookie QB of that class. And going into '22, I was super excited.
Then JMD left, and the disastrous streak of BB decisions began.
If they correct those staffing & free-agent mistakes of 22-23, and Maye can be developed with stability and teambuilding around him, we could be back to relevancy next season.

Go talk to Tomlin about Pickens. If there's one thing we know about Tomlin, he's not going to sign Pickens. Pickens will be avalable next year.

As for the draft we missed badly on, I'll say it again: it was a while ago. And almost none of the 9 receivers taken in 1st round are still with their teams, and one of them who is still with his team, Deebo, is a big mistake. He is hugely overpaid.

Of the 9 teams that took WRs that year, only one team is happy: Seattle with Metcalf, the last of the WRs taken.
I actually agree with Upstater on Pickens. Tomlin and the Steelers are very good about managing risk vs reward on some of their more mercurial players. Antonio Brown and Le’Veon Bell are the first two that came to mind, and the front office seemed to be willing to put up with them for a time because they were basically the two best players at their positions. Once their situations became untenable, they were cut loose, and they didn't do much elsewhere. As far as Pickens goes, he has a ton of talent, but he is wildly inconsistent and a complete head case as well. I don’t think he gets a second contract from someone, and the Steelers will get back a second or a third for him and let someone else pay him to be their headache.

I understand where you're coming from. I personally felt Mayo should gave taken the DC positions available to him 2 years ago when he was offered interviews.

Quite a leap to say he "should have taken DC positions available to him " as if he was a lock to be hired when, as you say, he was only offered interviews".

It is possible Mayo had secret pet names for other owners' junk as well and thus had the inside track.
Schvitzing with members of the Full 32 has its advantages.

He had multiple suitors.. Falcons, Panthers and Browns that I remember. I believe the Panthers may have been for HC. You have to remember he had BB to give any potential suitor his blessings on Mayo. He declined them to stay here as the job was already his. So had he actually taken one of the opportunity he'd been a better HC. Not really that complicated.

“From Day 1 when he got here, we knew he had it. Drake is a dog,” Austin said
