I've Seen Enough of Drake Maye...

The full quote explains how he will justify Jacoby starting:

"What I will say is this is a true competition and I would say at this current point, Drake has outplayed Jacoby. Now, in saying that, we have to take in the full body of work going all the way back to the spring and beginning of training camp. And we’ll see where we end up, but those are the conversations that will happen here over the next couple days.”
Then?? I thought it was was where we are now.

So the Team should be going forward with Maye but Mayo want to go backwards with Brissett?? Bait and switch Mayo he sounds like a salesman. RF have made some Great HC selections Parcells - Carroll - The GOAT HC now Mayo yeah there's a Seismic Drop off.

I have said Maye needed to start from day 1 of camp. The Patriots scouts/coaches did a poor job, they did not get where Drake Maye really was, they don't understand the level of prospect he is.

Now it is too late. Maye would be so far ahead if they just put him with the ones, let him get a rapport with the receivers, give him the vast majority of reps. They just screwed themselves by the approach that made no sense from day 1.

Bears, Broncos, Vikings, Commanders all went the proper route.
What are they going to do now? How can they have Jacoby prep as the starter but get Maye all the reps before he starts week 5?

They have been inept as a coaching and front office staff with this, AVP stuck in "how things are done".
Lucky for them they lucked into Drake Maye and he will save their jobs for the next decade.
Honestly, since they screwed this ALL up not sure what they will do. Maye is so elite he'll probably be able to overcome much of this ineptness by the coaches and play well if he starts, but they really hurt his development in year 1 with their poor approach.

Not that I'm annoyed by how they handled this or anything LOL. Rant over!

Mayo is getting too cute with this. By now he definitely knows who should start. You say it's one or the other.

I want Brissett to start as I believe a rookie QB should never play week 1.

I really wanted us to retain Trent Brown last FA I was hoping him and Mayo had a good relationship. We would be in a better place with him right now.

Where is it written that the starting QB needs to get most of the reps in practice? Brissett is who we think he is, whether he gets 100% of the reps or 25%. That should have been one of the reasons we signed him. Let Brissett take the lumps and give Maye enough reps to be able to improve during the season w/o getting beat up.

What we know......

Brissett started all three of the Patriots' preseason games, playing 27 total snaps and finishing 5-of-14 for 36 yards with zero touchdowns and one interception. (ESPN)

What Mayo says....

"In saying that, everyone wants to know who the starter is going to be. There are multiple factors that have to go into this decision. One is the total body of work, whether we're talking about the spring or the entirety of training camp. And I would also say, oftentimes we forget about the overall experience that a guy like Jacoby has, which will also be weighted in the decision we have to make in the near future.

Maye is nowhere near where he needs to be, to be an NFL-ready QB. He needs to become familiar with how complex NFL pressure schemes are. He will learn from Brissett, the sacrificial lamb.

What will he really learn from Brissett?? How to not play QB??

Like others have mentioned, I would need to see the offensive line improve before sending him out to play against starters. I wouldn't want him to get injured and loose his confidence.

I know what he's not gonna learn from Biscuit, how to take a hit. That was fugly last night

Like others have mentioned, I would wait to start him until the offensive line has improved. I wouldn't want to see him loose his confidence because he is taking too many hits.
That's why there would be an emphasis on the Run whether we are good at it or not.

My take from the start has been that this year is about next and years following, with the #1 priority being the development /evaluation of Drake Maye. I personally do not care how many wins they have this year. Wins can "teach a team to win," I suppose, but they also drop you down the draft order, and given that this is at least a two-years-to-go rebuild, this team needs draft picks.

Would or could it accelerate Maye's development to start, giving him "live bullets" experience? Sure, but the problem is just that: those live bullets in the form of aggressive defenses (and any defense will be aggressive playing a rookie QB). With this O-line - unspeakably bad and if this game is any indication, poorly coached - Maye will get hurt. I doubt, given his temperament, that he will suffer the sort of PTSD psychological ruination Mac suffered, but the likelihood of physical injury is obviously high.

Mayo pays lip service to the "best player plays" ethos, but Mayo says all sorts of thing, usually followed up with a comment to the contrary )"at the same time..."), so I pay little attention to what he says. (Bill didn't give us much, but when he said something. at least he meant it.) In this case, "playing the best player" - Maye at his point - would be the wrong thing to do, would be in contradiction with what I take to be the higher priority: seeing to Maye's health and development.

If Brisset is in fact injured, i still would not start Maye. Because I don't really care about this year's record, I frankly don't much care who starts in that circumstance. The fanboy will yammer like precitable klaxons, of course, if they trot the Zapster out there. Milton is farrrrr from ready, and seems worrisomely content with his limitations. Maybe they would yank some out-of-work QB nullity off his couch. Whatever: it doesn't really matter.

Maye has demonstrated his potential, his value. If we are to realize that potential and capitalize in the medium and long term on that value, he has to sit.

Who is the villain in all this? First, there are the failures of late-career Bill Belichick, particularly his failures as GM, but also his foolish dereliction re Mac. Second (and more currently) there is the failure of the new regime to do a better job providing an O-line with at least minimal competence. That they have failed to do. The QB conundrum is a direct result of that failure, and is the reason Drake Maye's development will have to be backburnered for the time being.
I remember thinking that it would be best for the Pats to keep losing and get a high draft pick, once Bledsoe got knocked out and replaced with a 6th round pick.

The Pats already had a losing record at the time.

That was a lesson learned, that winning was a habit, and a lot of losing teams keep drafting high year after year.

That example was a historical blip unlikely to happen again.

Maye has the talent to surprise everyone, and it would be less surprising than what Brady did, but Brady had BB and a better roster, and Mayo is unknown.

Lightning striking twice in the same place is not an occurrence I would bet on.

Wolf should be making calls to upgrade the line immediately so Maye doesn’t waste time on the sideline.

The blindside hit on Brissett was just a preview of what’s to come.
This is what scares me.
