Is Gilmore on ice?

Gilmore is on ice so that he can return healthy and bolster the defense for the stretch run.

There's a useful discussion to be had about how much Gilmore's absence plays into the improvement, how fixable his issues are if so, and what role he could play, but clearly this isn't the thread to have it. Ye gods.

Personally I just don't understand why Gilmore, Marsh et al can't come into a system and just not have any problems at all. I mean, I know I always know everything I need to do a new job after the first few weeks and then I never, ever make a mistake.

Trading him would entail a $22.5M dead cap hit, but sure, what the hell. We're probably going to trade him. The whole concussion protocol thing is probably just smoke and mirrors anyway.

Wouldn't trading him also transfer his contract and any respective cap hit as well?

Uh, Jamie Collins says Hi.

Completely different situations.
Collins had been with the Pats for 3 years and was expecting a BIG Payday despite the fact that he had issues covering TEs and was freelancing..

Gilmore had been with the Patriots less than 9 months. There were some issues, clearly, and he's been suffering from a concussion.

But, yeah.. totally similar situations..

The team that trades for a player only owes the base salaries. The team a player is traded from is still on the hook cap wise for bonuses and guarantees.

Not really give that he played very well in one of those games where the defense showed improvement.

As opposed to "on fire"?

His salary going forward would become the responsibility of his new team, but his signing bonus was already paid by us and would remain our responsibility. The way signing bonuses work is that while they're generally paid upfront (hence the name), for cap purposes you're allowed to spread the hit over up to five years so you aren't annihilating your cap every time you sign a player to a big contract. With Gilmore, for example, we gave him an $18M signing bonus, but for cap accounting purposes we spread that over five years, allocating $3.6M of cap space to it each year from 2017 through 2021.

If we were to trade him tomorrow, all of those future allocations would immediately be accelerated to the 2017 cap, meaning $14.4M of future cap hits would become current cap his. This would turn his total 2017 cap hit from $8.5M to $22.5M, which in turn would put us about $9M over the cap.

Thanks a lot.

gilmore needs to step up, no excuses.

if im butler i would be so angry to see this guy get all of that cash.
Or, you know, Butler could play his ass off till he's an UFA. LIKE Gilmore WAS.

If bb is true to his word and only the best players play, then Gilmore, the worlds dumbest db, should never leave the bench.

However I doubt Gilmore is traded as bb collects db’s, since you can never have enough good ones on your roster.

Ps: Gilmore may or may not be in concussion protocol, but I am willing to bet gilmore is getting classroom work on communicating and mastering the playbook. Bb is going to exorcize all the sexy rexy out of Gilmore and teach this imbecile how to do it the Patriots way, even if it takes the rest of the season.

Pss: when it comes to butler this offseason - bb should pay the man and make him a happy patriot for life!
