2 And closer to 1 than 3.

And your argument? Do you rank strictly by historical accomplishments? If so, that would be unfair to the newer coaches such as Kingsbury, LaFleur, Shanny, and McVay. Reid has been a HC for over 20 years, IIRC, and just one NFL championship to show for it.

I can't believe I'm on a football forum arguing whether Andy Reid is a top 5 active NFL coach. But here you go:

He is coaching in his 4th consecutive conference championship. And 9th overall. This alone would put him top 5 active. But there's more.

He has coached in 2 consecutive Super Bowls. And favored to make 3 consecutive in a couple weeks. And 4 overall. This alone would put him top 5 active.

5 consecutive division titles and 6 straight playoff appearances would put him in the top 5 active if you want to compare him to some of the more recent coaches.

He's number 5 in career wins and number 4 in career playoff wins.

He has 3 losing seasons in 23 years and 16 seasons with 10 or more wins. This after taking over the 3-13 Eagles and 2-14 Chiefs.

His winning percentage is higher than all of the coaches you mentioned other than McVay and none of them have won a title yet so it's hard to jump them ahead of anyone if winning titles is your criteria. Unless we are going to use projected Super Bowl wins, in which case I think you could just as easily project a couple more for Andy in the next few years.

He has won 100 games with 2 different teams. And taken 2 teams to the Super Bowl.

Mostly he has done this without elite quarterbacks unless you call McNabb elite which I'd say is a stretch.

There's really no way you can look at either the current situation or the entire body of work and not say Andy Reid is a top 5 active coach.

What's your argument? You don't like the Chiefs so Andy isn't a great coach?

Sure, but what's his record w/o Brady?

One thing comes to mind, for me- how many games he has blown because his clock management skills are horrendous, and that is one skill he has failed to refine in his twenty years of coaching.

Sure he's accomplished something with KC, but I think that's more because he has a very loaded roster.

If he doesn't blow it this Sunday, he'll be facing Shanny or McVay next and if he wins against either one, I'm happy to revisit this. Until then, he's the man with one ring.

He actually already beat Shanny in a super bowl.

After the way he mismanaged the clock in Philly he can never make the top 10 all time.. as Pats fans we are acutely aware of how to do it and how important it is to manage if correctly.

I dunno about Johnson at 10. Shanny was successful in Denver and that's it. I'd put Reid ahead of Shanny, maybe ahead of Johnson. Maybe. Reid got the Eagles to the SB.
Jimmy Johnson took the worst roster in football, by far, and had them in the playoffs year 3 and won the SB in year 4 and 5.
To compare Andy Reid went to KC, is in his 9th year and has won 1 SB.

Hypothetically, what if Bill had McNabb and Alex Smith and Reid had Brady. How many super bowls do they each have? Part of coaching is luck. Look what happened to Gary Kubiak. Much better coach with manning. Same as John fox. They all get pedestrian, including the greatest, with average qbs. You should realize that by now.

Phukk Candy Reid....loves his football wins far more than his kids...should be doing time for neglect instead of being pimped by moronic fans.

For sure. Elite Qbs do have a way of getting their coaches mentioned in the greatest of all time list.

Just curious. What is your opinion on Gibbs?

Without considering the full top 10 he can’t be above
Belichick
Lombardi
Brown
Landry
Hallas
Walsh
Gibbs
Noll
Shula
Johnson
so the best he could possibly be is 11 but there are a whole lot of guys with as many or more rings so I doubt it.
Are you putting him ahead of Tuna? Shanahan?

Some points in both directions
  • Reid won with McNabb and Vick. Both are good QBs but neither is a HOFer.
  • Wins, playoff wins and if he gets another SB will definitely put him in the conversation.
  • Unlike the other names on this list Reid has pretty much beeen a senior OC more than a HC and has had Jim Johnson and Spags to run the defense. One the one hand compared to the list above this is a demerit. On the other hand for a lot of the coaches right now who are considered top notch it's very true. McVey, Ariens (yes I know), Shanahan, Taylor and so on. As much as I loathe both of them because of their whining you have to give props to Harbaugh and Tomlin because they are more in the traditional HC mold having influence over the entire team.
  • In spite of being the senior OC Reids clock management is crap.
  • He has gotten Mike Martz disease at the worst of times choosing style points over giving what the defense gives you and a lot of times knowing going in this was going to be the obvious strategy.
  • I think the tendency is to say well he had Mahomes. Sorry but everybody on that list above had a Brady, Montana, Aikman....Gibbs is the exception and he gets a lot of credit for it and should. That said, although they didn't have HOF careers Theisman was an MVP, Doug Williams caught fire at the right time and Mark Rypien could easily have been the MVP over Thurman Thomas that year. That 91 Redskins team was loaded and is in the conversation for best ever.
  • Reid brings creative schemes to the game.

Looking at that top 10 list I really don't know enough about Hallas to compare. I think Johnson vs Reid is a peak vs volume conversation but if Jimmy stuck around I don't think he would have maintained that peak as shown by the Miami years. Shula is frankly just overrated for me. And not because of the Spygate years. Those early 70's Dolphins teams got a bit lucky timing wise where the NFC was on the decline and the AFC was in transition with the Raiders and Chiefs falling off and the Steelers and a rebuilt Raiders not rising yet. Then you give him Marino and he's only able to get to one SB and doesn't win any. The AFC was awful during those year. People knocked Elway and Reeves along with Kelly and Levy but they were consistently getting there at least.

I'd at least say Reid is in the conversation vs Johnson and Shula.

You can’t do that because they didn’t. You judge by what is accomplished but hypotheticals that you can’t answer.

Well then andy is a top 2 coach in the league. And hypothetical future success for shanny McVey and the other guys doesn't count. Pick one.

He is a top 10 coach but to put him on the same level as Belichick is dumb which is another reason why all Pats fans should want the Chiefs to lose because the comparisons with Belichick if Andy wins another 1 or 2 Super Bowls are gonna get a lot louder.

He actually already beat Shanny in a super bowl.

If he wins again, we'll know it wasn't a fluke.

Let's see what happens. No skin off my nose either way. I just don't think that highly of him because of his game and clock management skills. Sure he comes up with fabulous opening scripts but can't adjust to save his life. We've seen him stubbornly stay with the same schemes when the rest of the league figured out that to beat his offense, you go with a deep cover 2.

I don’t know about every ones criteria. It seems so focused on SB, even to exclusion of all those Old NFLCGs an earlier poster talked about.

BB has said great players win games, so a whole lot of those SB wins I discount mentally a bit.

i think for top 10 all-time coach you have to have made some substantial innovation or change to the game. Lambeau, Brown, BB are innovators.

BB is like the inverse innovator too. He not only has a game-plan in the HOF. But even if you discounted his TB SB wins; he has caused (GotoHell to create) more rules changes to stop him from winning than any other coach in history.

Shula -what? Reid-NOTHING. I don’t care if Reid wins 3 more. He still would just be along for the ride w some good players.

I know this is a discussion here frequently but I think it's a fair question. It appears to me that Bill has 1 playoff win in 8 seasons without Brady. So I think its fair to say that like every coach they ride along with good players to some extent. He has been great but great coaching is not enough. He has had huge talent on both sides.

It’s about achievements. For every “yeah but he had this advantage” there is a “but he had this disadvantage”
Part of coaching is teaching, and developing players as well as coaching to their strengths and weaknesses.
When you say “that coach had good players” I say of course he did because he did a good job coaching them.
