If we draft a QB, which QB would you want?

I didnt say you can get there with a moron; I said you dont have to have a top-5. Plenty of game managers have won SBs. Hell, TB's first SB -- HE WAS A GAME MANAGER not a top 5 (and you can argue # 2 as well). And there are plenty more grossmans out there in the nfl history books.

Flacco had 4 good games in 2012 after a season-long meeh. that aint top-5, that is "GOT LUCKY". (he threw for the same 59% completion rate 225yd per game avg in post season, but in 16 games threw 22 TDs and in 4 PS threw 11 TDs. In 16 games he threw 10 INTs and in 4 postseason a big 0 [That was the difference]. That still doesnt make him top 5.

Eli you could have a better argument that he played as a top 5 for 2011 (and that year ONLY); his comp % for that post season is 5-10 % higher than any other year in his career before or since. And the season-year was his 2d best in 10 years. But again he hit lightening in a bottle for 4 games; GOT LUCKY ain't a HOF, top-5, legacy QB. If he protected the ball better throughout the career I would be generous to call him a good 'game manager'.

Dont get confused by the fact that avg run-of-mill QBs today can throw for 4K yards in a season. That doesnt make them GREAT.

I would say you need a top 10 QB to win it all. Look at Kaepernick. He's got a bunch of talent but seems to make crucial errors. Same with Tony Romo. I think the days of the Trent Dilfer are over. You would need to get lucky and not face a team with a great defense to get it done.

I'm not sure you can win with Tony Romo, Philip Rivers, Jay Cutler, Alex Smith etc.

I went out on a limb early predicting Logan Thomas as a TE/developmental QB

(and lost in the media hype about Belichick's interest in Manziel etc was the fact that the Pats had Thomas work out for them... I don't think that was an accident)

This guy has incredible upside and the physical skills we need assuming he can transition back to TE where he would provide some value while spending 3+ years behind Brady learning how to be an NFL QB

Others like Edelman have proven a QB can switch to receiver and be productive. Thomas has the size and speed to more than replace Hernandez

Whether he can be the QB of the future is up to him and while his lack of fundamentals are definitely a concern, lets not forget that Brady himself wasn't highly regarded coming out of college either, joining the roster as a 4th string developmental QB

I don't know how far he will drop but wherever Belichick thinks he represents value I'm all for it

If he DID develop as a QB - watch out... 6' 6" with great speed and a strong arm all sounds great to me and if it worked out (3 years as a TE followed by startign QB) Belichick would cement s his legacy, giving the Pats a franchise QB of the future while getting value from him as a TE in the interim development phase

While an intriguing THEORETICAL idea to draft a guy and hold him/train him in a different position for 3 years and then throw him back into the HARDEST POSITION on the field to learn after that (and then hope/pray for hitting a homerun); the chance of this happening (under BB) = 0.0000000001%

I like the idea of converting him to TE; or even drafting him in late rounds as a developmental QB if you want. but trying to do both simultaneously is not practical time-wise (the backup qb needs to be studying films, working on throwing techniques and not on route running) and certainly not when he is a rookie or year-1 guy just learning how to deal wiht the nfl. he has to focus one way or the other.

I'd take Murray if he's available on day 3 and put him on reserve-PUP or NFI, then move him to IR so he doesn't take up a roster spot during his redshirt season. Assuming you can't get anything better than a 4th or 5th for Mallet, you're better off keeping him in 2014. The need is not for 2014, but beyond.

Flacco won one. Kaepernick got within 1 play and almost got back.
I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. If your QB sucks you are going nowhere. If you are an otherwise average team, you need a great QB to elevate you. Otherwise any team in the playoffs can make a run.

The Pats did that once before, don't you remember Rich Gannon?

IIRC the Patriots drafted him and told him that he was going to switch positions. He said eff you, and they were forced to trade him. I don't think he ever made it to camp. It was a stupid move--par for the course in those days.

Albert Breer ?@AlbertBreer 37s
LSU QB Zach Mettenberger met/will meet with the Raiders and Patriots today, will meet with the Vikings tomorrow. Throws tomorrow too.

Another top ranked QB. More due diligence?

Mettenberger would be a good understudy. But I have a feeling he'll go in the 1st, the guy is a stud

I'd look at him as a goal line TE only - he's got the size and strength you need there and he doesn't need to truly "learn" how to play TE - anymore than Mike Vrabel did.

Belichick made good use of Vrabel in those situations - and I don't think Belichick would agree it undermined Vrabel's ability as a LB either

In the case of Thomas he'd be giving near full attention to his role as a developmental backup QB (like he would on most organizations). The only difference being with the Patriots he gets to learn behind Tom Brady and also shows some value in a very limited TE role, whereas Vrabel had a lot of the defense on his shoulders

Your point is valid that Belichick would not attempt to teach a rookie two position at once - but we're really talking about a goal line Special Team role - and that's not asking too much.
