If Jimmy leaves, do you feel like Brissett could be the heir in a couple years?

Well the coaches seem to like him a lot, that's for sure. I like Jacoby's poise, work-ethic, and toughness....but skills-wise, I don't see the makings of a franchise quarterback, who can master and run our offense.

I'd like to see Jacoby learn to be accurate, refine his release and mechanics, and a touch on his deep ball....and if he can master our playbook, even better

Until then, I can't see him as a viable successor to Brady

Absolutely. He will be the next guy we trade in three years to some desperate team who saw a glimpse of him and who thinks the Brady aura will rub off on him too as Tom speculates on whether he'll still be playing at 50.

It's too soon to tell but I think BB is interested in Brissett's talent and is willing to see how much he can improve. When Garoppolo was injured, Brissett was called upon and the game wasn't too big for him. He earned the respect of the team and coaches with how he handled himself. I don't know if he is the heir apparant just yet. IMO, I think they offer Garoppolo a substantial raise to stick around for a few more years.
If he refuses, then I think he will be traded. If they decide to trade Garoppolo, I think they draft another QB and carry 3 on the roster.

Sure, he could be. Way too early to say right now, but I liked what I saw from him this year. He's not ready yet, but I don't think anyone reasonably expected him to be. I'd like to see him refine his delivery for a quicker release, and speed up his progressions a bit, but I expect at least the latter to come naturally with more reps. Most of what he's missing is coachable, and a lot of what we already know he has isn't, so I'm optimistic to see what he can be molded into under McDaniels' and Belichick's leadership. I've already seen enough to conclude he's not Ryan Mallett, so I think he's on the right path.

I'm of the same mindset with Brissett that I am with Garoppolo, though: no point in getting ahead of ourselves. It's always good to groom capable backups, and for now that's all I'm looking for with Brissett. In 2 years, we can revisit this again with a little urgency. By then, there's a good chance that Brady, being 41 and all, has slowed down. But 2 years a lot of people were saying the same thing about 2016. I'm going to wait for some sign of slippage from Brady before I spend too much effort worrying about his replacement.

Maybe, but the next GOOD QB? Not so clear. Not unless his accuracy and release improve a good deal.

I'm a fan of Jacoby but that's primarily because of what I've read about his demeanor and work ethic. I think he showed good poise this year in less than ideal situations but his ceiling is probably lower than Jimmy's.

I think he can be a starting level QB in the NFL in a couple years. He is raw right now and needs some serious work on his mechanics and processing speed but those come with time and coaching. The fact that they used their IR tag on him speaks volumes. Will he be Brady? Hell no totally different player with a different style. More like Big Ben who is plenty good enough to win with. To me this all comes down to how hard Brisket works on honing his craft and it sounds like he will do it. I am plenty comfortable until I see otherwise with him being the backup for the next 3 years at which point we will have a much better idea where he is at and more importantly what father time has done to Brady.

Their college careers are pretty irrelevant. Theres also no chance JimmyG will be the heir, since Brady will play at least 3 more years. Theres no way JG is going to sign only to sit behind TB for 3 more years. We cant compare Brissett and JG until Brissett has also had 3 years behind brady here. Its just too soon to tell. Besides Brady might play so long that Brissett is in same situation 3 years from now as JG. In that case, the heir is not on the roster. Its just too soon to know.

I didn't see enough to say yes yet, so I am saying no. He had 2.5 games to shows us glimpse of what he can become. Jimmy is clearly better than him, in game 4 when he was hurt the Pats were hoping for Jimmy to play hurt, and that for me was a bit of a red flag, not too much since he had hurt his hand but enough for concern, and I am also giving him a bit of a pass on Miami game too because the game plan didn't include him. So his best performance was against Huston which is Huston, so overall it is a mixed result.

I think tho, getting a bit off topic, if the Pats were to trade Jimmy, the would do it before the draft, either next year or the year after. If that's the scenario I think they'd likely use a 2nd or 3rd, heck call me crazy but maybe even first round pick on a QB.

You posted as if Jacoby and Jimmy are at the same stage in their careers. They aren't. The fact that "Jimmy is clearly better than him" right now is immaterial.

Jacoby was a raw rookie this year. Jimmy a 3rd year vet in the system.

I see Jacoby as far ahead of where Jimmy was in his first year, apples to apples. What Brissett showed in a pretty difficult situation (his 1st game- subbing in the middle due to Jimmy injury, game #2 being 4 days later, game #3 playing with a throwing hand injury) was remarkable. The kid has "it". Poise, quiet confidence, etc. I can see why Parcells was so enamored of him.
