I don't think he has anything close Edelman's evasiveness or toughness. JE's a rare find.
I agree Edelman is a rare find who maximised his talent and found a niche with the greatest QB of all time. But lets also remember three years into Edelman's career he was playing CB and could not make it onto the field in Super Bowl 46 against the Giants.

We might have to wait a little bit longer for G-O to show us what else he has but this game against the Chargers shows us a bit more of what he is capable of.

There were flashes of Edelman's greatness, though. He made some wicked difficult catches, some over the shoulder fade grabs, and tip toe catches.
Yes, and Edelman also led the league in drops last year with 11 last year. And he was showing it again this season.

Well then we might as well just cut him.

One year left on his contract with a 6 million cap hit. BB won't do him dirty like that.
Lol I don't want to cut him. I just hope we get to see one more game out of him in a Patriots uniform. Maybe a playoff game? I am starting to drink the Kool Aid.

I know. I just met your sarcasm with logic so you had no response. I hope Jules retires and we give him a glorious sendoff. Bring him back with Troy Brown. I don't want to see him turn into Welker.

GUNNER!!!!! LFG!!!

Strange that since we took him off KO duty...he has almost busted 3 punt returns for TD's in the last two games.....

Lol the bolded part legitimately made me laugh as it is correct. I agree I am hoping he hangs it up at the end of the year but I would love for one more vintage Edelman performance before he goes.

Edelman made his potential clearly visible in his very first preseason with the team. He didn't just suddenly get good in 2013 like you imply. Gunner has shown considerably less at this point in his career than Edelman had shown by late 2010.

And that was against a ST that's so bad that you have to go way back to 2000 Bills for comparison.
Yep, or the Chargers' own STs of 2010...

Just because his name is Gunner, he should get a 10 year no cut contract.

aaaggh...he's just a muzzle flash in the pan...

Am I the only one waiting for disaster every time he fields a kickoff? And of the first half he tries to take one from 9 yards deep in the end zone and gets bailed out by the fact that he stepped out. Did he honestly think there was any chance he would score a TD? I would say him fumbling would be a far more likely outcome than a TD based on the fact he seems to run full speed into the first guy that hits him on every return.

Then at the end of the game there is about 17 seconds of which we need every single 1 of those 17 and instead of fair catching he fields it and gets grabbed by the ankle and tries to fight for an extra half yard and wastes about 8 or 9 seconds. Cost us a chance to get potentially one more quick out underneath for 10ish yards to possibly get Cam's Hail Mary into the end zone.

Add this to the fact that he seems to bobble some catches on returns and I am ready to be done with him back there. I don't know who else they have to do it. I know Duggar has returned kicks in college and I am not sure about punts but I believe Byrd has returned punts as well so get one of those guys out there. I wanted Berrios over Gunner last year and while Berrios may not be a superstar by any means he can return punts and kicks and actually offers something in the passing game.

His returns haven’t really changed my mind to be honest. He barely had to make a move on either those returns
His cuts arent as sharp as Edelman's (maybe wont ever be) but if u cant see the adjustments he made on the returns in real time - as the game was happening - , i dont know what to tell ya

I love this notion that because a player played well in one week that means every other week he has never played poorly. He was a flat out bad kick returner early on. Taking kickoffs deep in the end zone. Bobbling the ball. Even his punt return decisions weren't great as I outlined in my first "poorly aged" post. Bill pretty much said he wasn't happy with the return game so maybe, just maybe, Gunner has played better in the last two weeks and didn't play as well early on. Shocking I know that things can change.

Here’s what ESPN’s Mike Reiss said of Belichick’s comments:

“Belichick put the kickoff return unit on notice during his weekly interview on sports radio WEEI, which had me wondering if returner Gunner Olszewski might be in jeopardy of losing his spot as the top returner. ‘We’ve missed a lot of good opportunities on kickoff returns. It’s been a frustrating, really in all eight games,’ Belichick said. ‘It’s been one thing or another, but we just haven’t gotten the production that has been there, the opportunities that have been there.’ Of course, it doesn’t always fall solely on the returner, but if Belichick does consider a change, maybe that’s a way to get rookie J.J. Taylor back into the mix after he provided an early-season spark but hasn’t played since Week 3.”
