The fact that he made the defining offensive play in the Super Bowl AFTER having lost his love for the game, is a testament to how great he was when he DID love it.

I'd guess that when he says he didn't love the game anymore, that it wasn't FOOTBALL that he didn't love, but rather the grind, and the pain, associated with it. It's very difficult to see him play in the playoffs, make all those huge catches, see him celebrate with his teammates, and think that he didn't love THAT.

But it does show you how football as an industry and profession can just wear a guy down. The abuse their bodies take, the grind of putting yourself through all that training...it's very easy to see the toll it takes on these guys. Makes Andrew Luck's retirement all that more understandable. And it also makes what Tom Brady has done seem all that much more special.

Pretty antagonistic take on it. Another way to say it is we're not expecting Gronk to come walking through that door, so when trying to look ahead to the season we're not photoshopping him to the second half of the season based on nothing.
