Giardi: Latest on Judon - Two sides remain "far, far, far apart"

This season is the last season on his present deal. He will turn 33 early in training camp next season.

His next deal is likely his last chance at a decent contract. If he plays this season on his present contract he’d be a 33 year old free agent. Not a strong negotiating position. Getting an extension this year would be much better for him.
It takes two to negotiate. Apparently, Judon has made clear what he wants and the team hasn't sent him a contract. IMO, a player who doesn't hire an agent gets exactly the representation/advocacy he has paid for. Some players have a great enough relationship with management that they can "negotiate" on their own, but that is rare.
=========================
I see no reason for the patriots to do anything. Apparently, they won't give him his estimate of what an all-pro will go for in the next free agency period.

All the patriots need to do is to start penalizing him for not participating and to have him kept away from the team until he is ready to participate. They can make it a formal suspension of not. He can have his agent or advisor contact the office as much as he wants.

OPTION ONE
Judon can choose to sit out and show up at Game 6 or 8 or whatever it takes to have this year count. He would then negotiate his best offer with another team after the season, while we move on. Or the team will trade him to some terrible team before this year's trade deadline, without any cooperation with Judon. The NFC can decide for themselves whether they can re-sign Judon or whether they can get him to play.

OPTION TWO
He can decide that just perhaps he will worth more next off-season if he comes back and plays well.

PERHAPS HE JUST WANTS A REWORK OF HIS CURRENT CONTRACT
I don't think that this is the case. If that is what he wants, he might consider hiring Godchaux's agent who might get this for him.

I believe that he wants the patriots to extend him as if they know that he will have a great year, and for them to take the future injury risk by major guarantees. Why not? It's worth a try. If he truly believed in himself and wanted to maximize his chances of a really big payoff, he would be on the field, trying to have an all-pro year, betting on himself.

Yes.. those are the Bill die hards... we all appreciate Bill how can we not.. but to some mayo can't cough without being compared to Bill LOL..
This has been my claim for some time here. Criticizing the HC in football and the manager in baseball is as American as mom's apple pie. The fact that it's happening to Mayo before he even coaches one game is a bit odd though. Usually a HC has to lose a game to be criticized, or a lot of games if you're a successful HC.

You can give them a decade. Robert Kraft may not have another decade to do that.
I was thinking about the team, not the current owners. Robert Kraft was a teenager when I became a fan.

Most (if not all) of the posters here never played sports for a living. Hell, I only personally know three people who did and I've only met a handful more.

Judon's position this year is just as bad. It's unfortunate that he had a severe injury at the worst time in his career but it's not the team's responsibility to pay him anyway. For all we know Judon's career could already be over.

it is possible to have both.
Judon says he wants to be here, but wants to be compensated at what he perceives his fair market value to be.
the Pats want him here, and are willing to pay him at fair market value, as long as he performs to that value.
seemingly, a deal can be reached.
void years. incentives. non guaranteed years.
it should not be this hard, if both parties want to have the player on the field for the NE Pats

What a sh*t show.

Being out of market I've always relied on NFL+ to watch replays of every game. But now it's not even remotely worth $99/year to watch replays of this team losing. Canceled my renewal.

With New England fans so accustomed to victory, I would think this team will bleed fans uncontrollably if the losing continues. It's just not entertaining.

If and when they field a competitive team again I'll reconsider. Might not happen in my lifetime unfortunately -- I'm 71.
I believe there was a game last season where nosebleeds were going for like 20 bucks. That’s insane. Interest is definitely wayyy down.

Yes, you will find some that are angry and felt somehow bill was "fired" . I call nonsense. Bill knew his time was up. As I said he is the best to every do it. Players leave and coaches leave too.

Rk has made millions making smart business decisions. I don't think hiring mayo was a knee jerk reaction. I feel he was a great choice.

I am sure the fact Mayo was a player is also part of it. He is probably much more sympathetic to players than the average coach as a result. However, he needs to realize he is the boss and certain lines can never be crossed and expect to maintain team cohesion and discipline.

Judon bringing his contract to the practice field crosses that line in my opinion. Maybe Mayo can salvage the situation and keep Judon without losing at least a part of his authority but it is not worth the risk in my opinion. I was always critical of BB as too hard ass on players but this is one example I would be very supportive of his methods, either trade Judon or cut him. I would not take the risk of keeping him and hoping it won't impact the team.
Looking back on it. Alot of Judon's problems are he has no agent. Your agent gives you sound advice do's and don't 's... you know. I understand judon is seeing all his guys getting extended. However those guys all obtained agents. Players focus on the thier games and show up to work and let you agent do the talking. Mayo did the right thing kicking him out of practice. I do hope we keep him this season at least.

Mayo better push for keeping Judon. I highly doubt he wants to go in this year without Barmore and Judon, good luck generating a pass rush.

The Patriots front office really screwed this up. They should been in discussions in the off season knowing there was a slim chance he'd play for 6 million this year. They'll get pennies on the dollar if they try to trade him now.

Its similar to how BB botched the Gilmore situation at the end.

I'll roll with all.

the screw up was last year, when Judon's contract was redone. the former GM should have realized Judon would be right back in his hold in/hold out mode. Judon was 31 years old coming off a great season. a 3 year extension was warranted with the back end non guaranteed and the front end incentivized for games played, sacks, post season awards.

Agreed, they either need to pay him market value or trade him.

Klutch client. Probably not happening lol. Hopeful they can at least compromise and get him a bump and a no franchise tag agreement,

The importance of a couple of extra wins this year is zero.

They probably disagree on the market value of 2025 and 2026 play for a 31-year old player coming off a major injury.

They could try to trade him. He won't bring much. Other teams understand the reality of a such a player coming off injuries wanting a top dollar extension.

Best is to just keep him out of sight unless he wants to participate. There would be the usual penalties and he wouldn't be paid. If nothing can be worked out with him, he could be traded closer to the trade deadline.

That keeps the pressure on the side of the team. I don't expect a 5th now vs a 6th later makes much difference to anyone. Judon on the other hand would be pressured to play or lose money. Perhaps, he will come to his senses and accept a minor restructure for this year, guaranteeing some of his incentives.

He wasn't the highest paid. He was 4th in cash in 2021.
He was 2nd in 2021. Forgot Watt's mega deal.
It's good, but it takes a nose dive after that. By the way, Trey Flowers got almost $29M in year 1. He averaged $18M per year which was signed 2 year prior when he was the Lions to Judon's $15M so far.
Flowers was a DE/DL. Judon is a OLB/Edge
That's the risk you take when signing players. Are you saying any player that gets injured is now overpaid? He was on pace for 17 sacks in 2023. He's been among the leagues best in sacking the QB since coming to NE. $14M is chump change for that type of potential production.
That is exactly what I am saying. It is impossible to perform to the expectations of a contract if the player cannot play. As players get older they become more prone to soft-tissue injury and/or a degradation in production and that is why teams cut older players as they do not want to incur more risk. You pay for potential when there is a track record of performance and health.
If Judon is looking for anymore than a 2 year deal, then he's going to have to rethink that strategy.

The life of Judon's contract shows that he is severely underpaid compared to his peers.
Who are his peers? These guys? Have his peers played in all their games with better numbers?
