Eli Manning: An end of an era....

He will make the hall of fame based on that but he would have been borderline if it wasn't for those two rings.
He's the only player I can think of who spent five or six seasons trying to play himself OUT of Canton. The two SB runs and wins will get him in, though. But, I think the selectors might make him wait a round or two.

I don't know why that's so difficult to believe. It's a pretty common career.

Here I am at a gathering with some colleagues and our clients:

Guess The Above:

A- Ron Jeremy
B- Stan Van Gundy
C- Khalid Shaikh Mohammed

It is interesting.
I look at it this way.
If we were to draft the qb of the future and you told me I could pick:

1) 2 SB wins but mediocrity otherwise or
2) hall of fame career but no SBs

I would take 1 in a heartbeat. But boiling down a career to 2 successes seems wrong.

At least when you're getting #1, you know there's something extra like a stellar defense or run game to carry you over the top.

#2 fits a guy like Marino to a T. I'm sure it's very frustrating for Dolphins fans that something always got in the way.

I'd take #1 too.

No, I think 2 SBs, plus the Manning name, plus the job location will get him in.

And I think it's an interesting debate as to whether or not the 2 SB wins should be enough to bring up an otherwise mediocre career to HOF level.
If 2 superbowl wins and a mediocre/good regular season career gets you into the HOF, then make way for David Givens and Dion Branch.

Eli Manning was a good but not great QB who was part of a team that made it to 2 superbowls and won. He was NEVER the key factor (other than happening to be playing the QB position) on either of those teams. IMHO, other than the great throw he made to Maningham (who made a great catch) in the 2011 Superbowl, Manning did nothing in either of those 2 superbowl games to distinguish himself as a GREAT player.

Maybe they need to change the name of that Canton Museum into the Hall of Great Individual Stats. Because that is the only way Eli Manning should get into the HOF. BTW- I have always liked Eli a LOT better than his brother. He has had a very good NFL career and was a very good QB. Just not close to being a GREAT one. (sorta like Kurt Warner.)

BTW- its the lack of stats that is going to keep Richard Seymour out of the HOF for a long while. Like a guy like Vince, he played in a defense for his prime years, that didn't ask their DL to create "stats". Despite the fact that Seymour was a dominant DLman at several positions during his prime years with the Pats (2001-7), I think he's going to have to be happy with his 3 rings instead of one Gold Jacket.

Edit: I didn't know about Eli's benching until AFTER I wrote this post.

Man I hope Vince gets deservedly in on the first ballot. The intro video highlights would be capped off by the Buttfumble.

Eli has had a similar career to Flacco. On a day to day basis they are both the epitome of average with QB ratings in the low 80's. But both had moments of brilliance and had the ability to play like a HOF player on those handful of moments when the lights were the brightest. I personally do not think that makes either HOF worthy but my guess is Manning eventually gets in.

wow, the giants did Eli dirty.....this isnt even like the broncos/chiefs where there is possible "future" waiting in the wings.

ELi was dumped for Geno freaking smith...the Jets castoff...They arent winning anyway, so what is the point of benching him?

The Giants must be planning on trading Eli away or something.. and are now just focused on losing as many games as possible to secure a top draft pick

I love how many of the Patriots rivals over the years have turned into totally pathetic franchises (Colts, Giants, Jets, Ravens to some extent)

Ya know Tony, I am pretty sure that the Giants are going to make a hard push for McDaniels and Casserio this off season. Before this I thought it would be a tough offer to say no to. It's a great franchise (just ask Bill), solid defensive talent, an aging but decent QB, and will likely pick in the top 5 in a good QB year.

But now I don't know. All the rest is the same, but ideally it would be nice for McDaniel to pick out his QB of the future THIS season and have Eli there for the transition. Doesn't look as good as it did yesterday.

I guess the other way to look at it is he'd go to NY with a clean slate AND a long term contract, so he'd have time to develop his QB. At any rate, the Giants are definitely tanking, but are a hot mess right now.

Why are they starting Geno? It is not like he is a future #1 QB. It just seems stupid, why not just start Davis Webb and see if you have anything with him, otherwise let Eli play out the season.

They're in full tank mode now for a top draft pick... they join the list of atrociously pathetic franchises like the Colts

His current QB is Blake Bortles.
I suppose that Goober (or is it Gomer?) could be a caretaker for a season or two while his drafted QB of the Future learns the pro game; but if Jimmy G becomes a UFA then Coughlin would be remiss not to make a very, very serious push for him. He'll have whatever cap space he needs to git'er done.

Makes sense, but Jacksonville needs to do better than that. Eli wouldn't be a huge imorovment over Bortles at his current age.

There will be multiple teams out there, and multiple QBs available. How they'll shake out is TBD. If Jacksonville doesn't bring back Bortles, that'll free up about $19m, so they should be able to compete financially for pretty much any available QB. I just think that, for Eli, Jacksonville makes more sense than Denver.
