I don’t really see how this year is different than any other year. What are you blaming the pats for the Gronkowski and Hernandez contracts? It’s easy to be critical of those moves in hindsight. The pats can free up a decent amount of cap space by making some cuts and restructuring/extending contracts (which happens every year). If the pats used the examples above they could get $20M to $30M below the cap, which is more than enough to re-sign Talib and Edelman while still being able to pursue additional free agents. Every year some nut predicts the “End of the Patriot Era” and yet every year the pats are in the Super Bowl discussion.
