Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

Cincinnati has turned the ball over more times than the Jets have, yet the Bengals are allowing 7.1 fewer points per game. I'm not sure that you can pin the Jets slightly below average scoring defense primarily on turnovers by their offense.

You mean the team with one of the best defenses in the NFL. Not quite matching up to the Bengals is hardly a defensive failure.

Actually, I think those that weren't in favor of bringing him in mistakenly thought those that were in favor thought we were getting the Ed Reed of old. Most of us know that he isn't what he used to be, but he would have been quality depth at the very least. Either way, it will be interesting to see what he signed for. Hopefully it's a nice, fat contract.

Nothing he has shown this year indicates that possibility, which the Patriots obviously believe as well. Given BB's well-publicized love for the guy, the fact New England passed him by at what likely would've been a very affordable price speaks volumes.

IMO that's skewed when your QB turns the ball over 14 times in 9 games and your offense scores 18.8ppg. The Jets D is 8th in ypg.

The Jets D is solid IMO, they just have a big weakness at #2 CB. (Millner blows) If Millner figures it out, that's a pretty good unit. They held us to 13 and 20 points.

The Jets are allowing 25.67 ppg. That would equal 410 for a 16 game schedule.
The 2011 Patriot defense which was roundly criticized on this board as among the worst defenses in NFL history allowed 342, or 21.38 per game.

The Jets have committed 1.89 turnovers per game, the 2011 Patriots committed 1.06. So if you think 13 turnovers over the course of a season is equal to about 68 points (which is silly) then taking away the turnover impact makes the Jets 2013 even with the 2011 Patriots D.

I'm not sure how talking about the Jets defense is derailing a thread about a defensive player signed by the Jets.
All teams have turnovers that lead to points. I'm sure the Jets have more than others. That doesn't dismiss a team being on track to allow over 400 points.

True. But he could've been accommodated as a starter for the Patriots if BB was as sold on him as Wrecks appears to be. In other words, the Pats probably could've landed him if they REALLY wanted to.

Well, sure if they had a guy to bench in order to make him a starter, which they don't.
I'm sure BB would have taken a chance on him and tried to work him in, but Rex no doubt offered him a starting job, so it was a no brainer.

That the Patriots don't believe it doesn't mean it isn't so. There's plenty of history to go on there. Anquan Boldin, for example, would have helped in 2009 and even this year. But the Patriots didn't sign him so, given that logic, the Patriots didn't believe that he could help as well. So that argument is weak, at best. As for what he's shown, he isn't what he used to be but, depth wise, he's definitely shown enough. He's shown more this year alone than Harmon or Tavon Wilson have on the defensive side of the ball. He was cut because he was running his mouth about the coaching staff and because Swearinger has looked promising, so the writing was on the wall in Houston. As for the price, we don't know what it is yet. But, like I said, hopefully it's a nice one.

Well my eyes weren't. They're including pretty much all his snaps and the fact that he's only had one missed tackle and only given up one reception.
