Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

This is mostly just a name thing at this point. He's not 100% and very well might be finished.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

I don't think you need to. The Texans cut him. That should say enough.

Look, just because a player used to be great doesn't mean there's 'no downside' to signing him. If he takes the field and is a complete liability in the secondary like he was last year for the Ravens and presumably was this year for the Texans, that's a big issue. Names don't defend passes.

At what point was Ed Reed "a complete liability" in 2012?

Was Irsay always this bad? It seems like he started tweeting dumb **** once Polian got canned.

When he missed 21 tackles and allowed a completion percentage (and receiving yards) magnitudes higher than he ever had previously. He wasn't good last year, and the Ravens began taking him off the field at times. Mike Preston, who covers the Ravens for the Baltimore Sun said "Ravens coach John Harbaugh wanted Reed back as much as he wants a root canal" when he signed with the Texans. He's also been dealing with injuries this year on top of having slowed down considerably. It's not surprising -- he's 35 years old.

I know it, the Ravens might have had a shot at winning one more Lombardi had Reed not been such a liability last season.................

Once again, there is no downside because Belichick isn't going to put him out there if he is toast. there is no harm in bringing him in and seeing what he can do, if he's done then he's done but if he still has something left he might be able to help them and the only risk is shuffling the 53rd roster spot to see what a first ballot HOF safety has left in the tank.

The Chargers cut Rodney Harrison. The Chiefs cut Brian Waters. The Raiders cut Tommy Kelly. Just a few examples of why it's not true that the Texans cutting an older player in Reed "should say enough." Certainly there are plenty of examples where it is the case, but the point is that Pats need to do their due diligence here in case he really isn't washed up. I'd like to think that they wouldn't sign him and have him out on the field if they think he's done.

Don't be sure BB will want Reed for certain. Don't forget that Reed started a mini-mutiny last year on the Ravens by publicly calling out Harbaugh for making the team practice in pads. BB would take that kind of talk for about as long as it takes to pick up a telephone and say, good luck with your future elsewhere, Ed.

Add in that Reed just called out his coach/coaching again in Texas and those two incidents might be more than BB wants to deal with, and this all comes with the serious question of whether Reed can even play anymore.

With all the young players on this team the last thing I'd think BB would want to introduce is a guy who has decided he's earned the right to publicly speak his mind. Now, BB did get Moss to zip it for two years but once Randy started running at the mouth he was gone.

This is actually my biggest concern here. The Pats don't want malcontents in the locker room. They may still think he has talent, but don't want him imploding the locker room. I suspect Belichick would have a long discussion with Reed about this before signing him.

There's a missed tackle stat? Where do you find that?

There is also a stat for safeties for completion % against and receiving yards? Once again, where is that from?

If it's a reputable site, like CHFF then i can see some validity to them, however if this is from PFF then it is useless.

If only every player on a Super Bowl winning team was a star. Reed was off the field quite a bit in the Super Bowl, by the by.

Hahaha CHFF isn't reputable at all. PFF has its issues, but it's far better than CHFF. Being horribly biased towards the Patriots doesn't make it objective.

FO also had Reed as the worst tackler among defensive backs last season: FOOTBALL OUTSIDERS: Innovative Statistics, Intelligent Analysis | Broken Tackles 2012: Defense

Even if you don't believe the stats, all you have to do is take a look at what Baltimore fans were writing about Reed last year. "Missed tackles" comes up constantly.

Apples and oranges. These players weren't released midway through the season, when the team was already on the hook for the player's contract.

In other words you either got those stats at PFF or made them up. So much for that discussion. PFF named Kareem Mackenize the best player in football a few years ago, I put more stock in the opinion of the girl at the carwash than anything PFF says. The most useless site in a vast universe of lame sports sites.

When does he clear waivers (assuming he does so)

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Good read, nice work by Yates. His opinion is based on 2013 film study of Reed. For those who like to cut to the chase (though you should still read the whole thing):

• Projecting a Patriots role. ... based on his tape from this season, he’s better off in a spot different than how he was used in Houston. The Patriots have their free safety in McCourty, though they do play some half-field safety responsibilities, meaning there are times when the strong safety will have to handle free-safety chores. For Reed, though not a heavy-framed player, he has the tackling willingness and instincts to handle some of the duties Steve Gregory has manned this season. With Gregory possibly missing upcoming games due to a broken thumb, the Patriots could have a void to fill. In-house options to replace Gregory include safety Duron Harmon, who has an interception in each of his past two games. Gregory’s injury doesn’t appear to be a long-term one, so the expectation is he’ll be back in a few weeks, if not sooner.

The verdict. Would an investment in Reed be worth it? He’s best suited to play a situational defensive role and provide veteran leadership and wisdom to a secondary that features five first- or second-year players. ...Belichick and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia don’t need Reed to play an every-down role and are a creative duo that could maximize his strengths. With that in mind, if signed on a free-agent contract, Reed would be a worthwhile Patriots investment in my view.

Have to admit, I was in the no thanks category, but Yates is pretty convincing.

Any metric that says that, on average, every team in the league in 2010 had a player better than Tom Brady—the first unanimous MVP in NFL history—is absolutely worthless.

Except FO also had Reed as the worst tackling defensive back in football. Count missed tackles how you want, there's fire to that smoke.

Taking a quick look at what you're talking about, that list that had him at #33 in 2010 was based on one person's opinion, not any metric.
