Ed Reed released by Texans ... signs with Jets

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

What about picking his brain for how the Ravens were able to be competitive against us (and teach McCourty what he can).

And we do play @ Baltimore, Sun, Dec 22 @ 8:40 PM

It's sadistic to say, but knowing how much Ravens fans DON'T want him to play for us is definitely an added incentive.

Apparently the lawsuit refers to an incident that happened June 23. Not surprised to see the media gloss over that fact.

Why not?

I would try everything that is possible to not draft another safety.

How would signing a 35 year old free agent midseason mean that they won't draft another safety? Even if they do sign him, it's not exactly a long-term move.

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Based on comments from the Texans board, it sounds like that scenario would be equally plausible with Reed on the field.

That would be my concern as well. It just seems like he may be a different player since his hip surgery--and he was already getting to be a bit limited prior to the injury/surgery.

On top of that I'm not sure how much Belichick went after him in free agency, if at all. If he did not want him then, why would he want him now, when he is much less of a player?

Because is also much less of a financial investment now.

I see no harm in going over to the free agent dollar store and picking up an old Ed Reed.

Well, in fact things are not related, but at least is a try, Adrian Wilson is not that young and we signed him.

Anything that they can do via market deserves a try, I'm absolutely sure BB will draft another bust or reach another unknown player next draft for playing safety.

AND....the patriots signed adrian wilson, who is a few years younger. with wilson on IR and gregory hurt, the situation is different.

Damn it! This thread just reminds me that the Patriots could have had Swearinger.

Sign the beast!

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

While you probably won't find someone more against this than me, here's something that makes some sense to me.

It Is What It Is » Willie McGinest, Heath Evans love idea of Ed Reed with Patriots
McGinest: “I know a coach down in New England that loves Ed Reed. When I was in those meetings, we talked about him a lot. He’s a heck of a player, he does a lot of things on and off the field because he’s a leader and he understands the game of football. He needs to go somewhere he doesn’t have to play 70 plays a game; where he can go in there and allow him some time to get healthier and maybe towards the playoffs if he’s feeling real good, stick him in there.”

Evans: “For me, really the only spot that makes sense is New England. You could stockpile him away on the bench, let him heal up. Communication is key for everything that Bill [Belichick] wants to do on defense – that guy has the mouthpiece to make this defense better when it counts. Let him learn what Bill wants to do [and] come Week 16, Week 17, those January games, I guarantee [Reed] will pay dividends.”

He's not worth having on the team right now, but I suppose that if they wanted to sign him with the goal of letting him rest and improving physically, then I suppose it could work out.

Spot warmers

Maybe but we just brought in Andre Carter for a test drive why not bring in another antique for a spin? I really don’t see a tremendous downside we could cut a player like Mulligan and he is not going to go anywhere on the free agent market so we could bring him back if need be.

I'm not against bringing Reed one bit. Quite the opposite. Reed at safety isn't worse than carter at DE. I say bring him on!

re: Ed Reed released by Texans [Update: Picked Up By Jets]

Pat Kirwin commented on Reed on Sirius this afternoon. Spent time with him in the Texan's training camp. Talked to a Raven's teammate of Reed. Kirwin's assessment: Reed is D-U-N, done. Finished. Nothing in the tank. Just signed with Houston to pocket their $5 million.

The problem I see with Reed is that his style of play doesn't lend itself to going in for a few snaps a game. You have to build your defense around what he does. And, he can't do THAT anymore.

Ed Reed is like my '98 Subaru: broken down, rusted, limping along on fumes. A shell of its former self.

With all due respect and deference to your omnipotence your holiness Ed Reed is a Bond Car, not your 98 Subaru, which I am sure still handles well in the snow. If Ed is available at auction you put the bid in, period, because right now they have a Kia as option #3.

I'm sure the car Pierce Brosnan was driving in Goldeneye was a great car at the time. Unfortunately, that movie was released nearly two decades ago. I'd take the Kia, especially when you'd have to pay out your nose for the rusted up old BMW.

I'm not sure quite why this makes so much sense, but it does. If they were loaded or even just "set" as the S positions then you let it go. But it really can't hurt if he clears waivers, comes cheap, and wants to finish his career strong. A hungry Ed Reed for a few games and a few 100k? Who wouldn't take that? If that's not who he is, and he took the Texan payday like Scottie Pippen took the Bulls back in the day (didn't really want to play anymore, but saw there was money on the table), then of course stay away. It should be pretty obvious should it get to the point where he comes in for a workout.

There's a lot said about "nothing left in the tank" and I think that's fair...he's not 25 anymore. You hear the comments about defensive players who can see the whole field, see exactly what's going to happen, but once they're over the hill regardless of the fact that they know what's about to happen they can't get to their spot anymore. I think Ed Reed is on the precipice of being that guy...but he isn't quite yet. He can still make a few plays for you - the question is whether you think he kills you when he can't get there. He probably shouldn't play full-time anymore, but he can still back the front 7 on run downs. Does he hurt you more than Wilson or Harmon in coverage when he's in there? Probably not. Maybe he can still smack a Bronco WR or two around. So what the hell?

Whatever, I have never heard of a Kia that was invisible. Ed has cloaking...........

Good post. He hasn't been able to do anything on the field this year, that's why Houston dumped him. Too many fans here are looking at his name and seeing the Ed Reed of 2012 and prior. I will only be mildly surprised if BB signs him, though. I'll be REALLY surprised if he is signed here and contributes anything significant.
