Come on Sam. Penix, JJ and Williams have done nothing to show they are better. Always add a negative spin even when it’s not warranted
Williams, JJ and Penix have looked sensational in TC. They will all have more yards, TDs and better record than Drake at seasons end I do think that Drake has a higher ceiling than McCarthy or Penix and by end of year 3 he will be the second or third best of this quarterback group. I know many on this board believe I am negative, but just trying to be real and offer up genuine opinions..

There's been a lot of media chatter regarding Drake Maye not looking great. The spray throws, the missed reads. I fully anticipated that the transition to the JMcD system would take some time. Are you legitimately concerned or is this just media hype and unrealistic expectations that Maye should be looking like a top 5 QB early on in year two?
I’m not concerned at all. He looked great as a rookie, and has another camo under his belt, this time with significantly better coaching. He will be operating a much more intelligent offensive system with a much better concept, design and play calling and he has better weapons and a better OL around him.
I’m sure he will still have to outgrow a few overly aggressive mistakes, but he won’t make many mire of them than other QBs.
The arrow is pointing up, and he is going to have a very good season and this team will be in the playoffs, aided by the easiest schedule I’ve ever seen.
He gets to learn while playing half his games against teams that lost 12 or more games last year.

"Great" is a bold descriptor to use.

I'm terrified about some people's memories.

Considering he was a rookie, and the team and coaching staff around him, I think it’s the perfect word.

So we had some other player on Offense/Defense with Maye's Star Potential?? Asking for a friend.

“Great” as a rookie is an overstatement. He won one game, he was not good in clutch time.
He looked good at times not great.
Great was Jayden Daniels.
This great as a rookie narrative is overstated

15 TD, 17 turnovers, multiple head injuries.
It wasn't Jayden Daniels or Justin Herbert out there.
Saying Daniels or Herbert is stunning. It’s like looking at an NhL player and saying “it wasn’t Wayne Gretzky or Marty McSorley…”

With a Amateur HC and OC those numbers are a miracle in a sense. Our WR Group was also Ranked 31st: yeah he wasn't working with much.

This is why I hate the preseason. What you see in preseason games doesn't necessarily mean anything for the regular season.

I'll point to that third preseason game in 2003 where the Patriots defense was so awful that Belichick made the starters play all the way into fourth quarter and they were still getting burnt by second and third teamers. The 2003 Patriots defense was easily the best defense in Patriots' history and was a top defense in NFL history.

Maye played a handful of series in two preseason games. There was no scheming. His top receiver wasn't playing. And the opposing team rested their starters. Who knows if Maye was dialed in. Plus he performed well in both joint practices against starters. I am taking nothing from the preseason to judge what Maye will be.

Yes, you know, actually "great" rookie seasons.

Maye showed flashes.

Future HoFer Herbert is and was trash. People are enamoured : a potential that will never be realized.

Yeah I mean, you can put all the caveats in front of it you want, and you might very well end up being correct in the end.

But the actual results are the actual results. No, I'm not *concerned* but my expectations aren't as high as some others right now either.

Again, you might be right in the end, but they keep stats on these things.

I think if you compare him to 2002 Brady, you might be ok. 28 TDs, 14 picks, 9-7 record. At that point, Brady was 25 yrs old and had already won his first ring. Maye's not yet 23 and hasn't won anything, but ok sure. If we are going to compare him to Tom Brady with 5-6 rings who knew the answers to the test, then it's unfair.

I really think we need to give the kid a break. There's probably more than one 3 INT game coming up.

Actually Steve 2002 was Brady's THIRD season as a pro. People forget his uneventful 2000 season and how actually it was critical to his overall development.

I find it a combination of frustration and hilarity how media and fans react to a missed pass or a bad decision like it's a sign of terminal ineffectiveness on the part of Maye. I read where this is his 4th new offense in the past 4 seasons of college and pro football. That is not exactly ideal for a QB's development and yet Maye has survived that adversity to create what most observers believe has been a pretty steady start to his career.

The FACT is we won't be seeing him approaching his ceiling for another 3 or 4 years, so kvelling over every misstep in a walk thru practice really IS kind of ridiculous.

BTW- It's interesting you bring up the Brady "I know the answers to the test" comment. IIRC wasn't it about 10 years or more into his career before he made that comment, not 12 GAMES.

Here's hoping this thread dies a swift death and doesn't morph into a 12 page ode to angst, depression and negativity.

Again, basing your opinion on TC reports. Just like Simmons, who has ranked quite a bit lower than Campbell in preseason. Penix, JJ and Caleb are not better right now. Seriously Sam.
