DeAndre Hopkins released (And Ongoing Rumors)

He's also only 6 months younger than Hopkins. And you got him for pennies, so getting rid of him for pennies is perfectly acceptable.

I don’t think there would be much of a dead money hit. Parker has shown flashes of being a really good receiver, but he’s never available,

Haven't read the whole thread...

Hop is a long term vet... probably tired of camp and practice at this point... Does anyone else think Hopkins might not want to sign with anyone until camp is substantially over? Any scuttlebutt in the twitterverse to that effect?

I'm seeing negative stuff how Hopkins isn't a hard worker that I don't know to be true, but BOB would know what to expect.

I don't know what camp is putting out that stuff, but Hopkins is one of the smoothest, smartest in the league. It would be hard to imagine he didn't work hard at his craft after watching him.

He's probably a nut job like almost every good WR in the league, but I'd imagine it as a perfectionist, not slacker. Admittedly, I know nothing.

As to whether he prefers to sit, everyone thinks it's all about the money

Starts with a "J".

We went through this situation as Patriot fans for twenty years, almost every time we thought a really good veteran would come to NE “ to get a ring,” they ended up going for the money. And it makes preference sense, most people are going to take the most money when they are looking at their last big contract. That’s the most likely outcome for Hopkins as well.

Didn't BOB say he didn't like all of Hopkins' baby Mamas? That is going to get expensive over time. I think he signs for the most money possible.

He did say that. IMO we offer $16m (1m more then OBJ) but less guaranteed. Incentives.

That was the report on why he wanted out of Houston. I think 95% of players who are on the market toward the end of their career’s ultimately go for the best contract, and that makes sense given that most won’t see that kind of money again.

Oops, yeah, i thought it looked thin...posting in a hurry...have to perform a marriage ceremony this weekend.

So, yeah, they're very unlikely to keep six:
DHop
Juju
Parker
Bourne
Thornton
Douglas and Boutte and Cunningham all to the PS, which, if they show anything, will likely get them poached. Maybe Cunningham gets on the 53 as QB3...

I don't think they're getting DHop, but if they do and any of the rookies shows to be a keeper (especially with Boutte's ceiling), I expect either Parker or Bourne to be moved. Their contracts are friendly to any trade partner, and cuttable with minimal cost.
It's unlikely that Douglas or Boutte make it to the PS. No way I keep Parker over either of them.

Really is no reason not to go for him.

Do you think those BabyMomma's gonna uproot their families to bring them to NE? I don't think they ever left Houston.

Little early to make that claim for Douglas. Boutte I definitely am a lot more confident about.

the more I think on it the LESS likely I see the Pats making a serious push for him.

First I think the WR's we already have are competent at worst. Parker, Bourne and JJ are ALL proven capable NFL WR's and Thornton is someone who has special athletic abilities and needs the reps if he hopes to BECOME a good to great WR.

Second is who we have at TE. We are likely to be in 2 TE groupings with Gisecki getting "Joker" looks and a lot of targets. Also with Washington and the Harvard kid are also "joker" types. It looks like BOB wants to make it a big part of the offense going forward.

Third, you have the fact that you drafted 2 WR's to develop

So if you can get past the issues of Hopkins bad break up with BOB, his desire to sign with a "superbowl contender", which the Pats are NOT, to start this season, his intentional indifference that Hopkins showed at coming to NE, AND the facts of his age recent injury past and desire to be paid as a top 10 WR; you STILL wind up with the issues I mentioned above.

If he's here, will he get the targets that will make his signing worth while.

Now I believe Hopkins IS still a top WR. Even though he was injured the last 2 season, when he was on the field he STILL averaged around 70 ypg receiving, so he was productive. So that is not an issue with me. The issue with me is how much of a difference with THIS team.

I'm guessing that this is going to be a team that will run the ball around 45% of the time and will matriculate the ball down the field with a intricate short to mid range passing attack with the hope that Thornton will provide some deep route threat. We already have the receivers to adequately fit that kind of offense.

Adding Hopkins isn't going to change that, AND might also slow down the hoped for development from the Rookies and Thornton..

So to me Hopkins would be a luxury item, NOT a necessary one, like a lot of people think. There isn't going to BE a #1 WR on this team, but rather a passing offense by committee, very much like EVERY passing offense Bill has had, (except for the Moss years).

You might be right, I had not thought about that. But the child support and college educations will get expensive no matter where they live.

The issue is that the different "Baby Momma's" were at the team facility a lot. Child Support and College educations have nothing to do with that.

Agreed. But the point I made, which you might have missed, is that I think Hopkins will be chasing money, not a ring, because he has a lot of bills coming due.

No. I didn't MISS anything. I took issue with the comments about the Baby Mommas.. I didn't say anything about what it would take to sign Hopkins or what his motivations would be. Why you seem to be harping on that when no one has questioned it is a mystery.

I am a mysterious guy. It is part of my personality.
