I give Rich Mckay a helluva lot more credit in building TB prior to Chucky than Dungy. One of the most over-hyped coaches ever, not saying he isn't a good coach. Just the hype about him is next level.
Although I do love the fact that he took a team that Dungy had built and the first year won a SB...
He was damn good. A pro bowler.Rich Gannon was pretty good when he coached Oakland.
10M per year for a SB-winning coach? Sure, that makes sense to me. Honestly, if you aren't willing to bet that your coach is worth $10M you probably shouldn't be hiring him in the first place.
But... giving a 10 year deal to a guy who hasn't coached in basically a decade? That's ****ing insanity. What happens if 4 years from now they haven't made meaningful progress and it becomes quickly apparent the game has passed Gruden by in the decade he's been away? You can't very well fire the guy, unless you're willing to eat $60M while he retires, which by the way is over 10% of Mark Davis' net worth.
but he’s not long in the booth thoughI think Gruden has been in the booth too long to be successful in his return to coaching. We’ll see what happens but that’s my view of it.
I think this is a by-product of being a member of the media. By taking a prominent media job, you get to look like a genius because it is so easy to Monday-morning QB the whole time. You get to raise your profile, keep your name out there, etc, etc. You gain a legend of being better and smarter than you actually were. One of the most over-hyped coaches ever, not saying he isn't a good coach.
