Celtics trade Isaiah Thomas, Brooklyn 2018 pick & players for Kyrie Irving

One more thing for those unhappy about this and blaming Ainge.

This has Wyc written all over it - Ainge bargained for the best deal possible IMO.

We will see what happens - will be one hell of an interesting season - run and gun city.

It makes the Celtics better. Maybe better than Cleveland even.

However lets be real. In the end this is a deal to win the conference not the championship. I don't think a deal that could beat GSWs was possible. Maybe if you combine the Celtics/Cavs rosters you'd have a good shot... maybe.

I'm a Nets fan. Kyrie is 4 years younger, better, and the Nets aren't likely to have a pick as high as they did last year (and even sneaking into the playoffs isn't totally out of the question). Thomas is a fan favorite but it's a good trade for the Celtics.

Absolutely the Nets have improved this year - they made a lot out of a little.
I think their pick at best will be 8-10 but like you said they could make the playoffs.

Well, no, no one's beating GS this year. But next year?
Irving is a top 5 player in the league, Hayward, Horford,Tatum and by 2019 Brown might be a legit superstar. That team beats GS. Not to mention Kyrie will attract other top fas. C's could be absolutely loaded by 2019, positioned to be long-term title contenders.

I wish the deal included can't shoot Smart.

the Brooklyn pick is not as valuable to us next year. The top 11 or 12 guys coming out are either forwards or centers, and we don't have a need for them. To get Kyrie was a good move as he is the better player and IT is going to want a max deal next year.

Anthony Davis or Boogie Cousins would top it off.

Yes, but it would seem it's going to be a one year replacement. Even if IT has another great season, it seems CLE is going to be dumping salaries and rebuilding.
Agree.

Danny is the basketball version of Mike McDermott.

All the chips to the center....

Kyrie is a major upgrade, but its the Brooklyn #1 that bothers me.

Oth, C's are still loaded with young talented players with huge upside,e.g., Tatum and brown.

The C's will be better this year because of the trade. But the jury will be out for 2 years when we find out: a. Just how good was the Brooklyn pick? and b. Does Kyrie stay with C's?
The brooklyn pick is what bothers me too. I'd give then the c's #1 but brooklyn is to much imo. I will miss IT.

As I recall, the C's dang near did not make it out of the first round last year. We were non competitive for long stretches vs the Cavs. We needed to make changes.

Solid point, and GSW may not be beatable for a few years, but still, it's interesting to consider if we're done with the roster or not. As above, other players know Kyrie from the US basketball / Olympics, playoffs etc and are all of a sudden more likely to find Boston a much more interesting place to play.

Good point on the timing. Lots of people were asking if Danny would ever pull the trigger. Now he has. It's not like players of Kyrie's caliber are on the trading block all the time. As I said earlier, signing him to an extension makes it a much better deal.

That team in 2019 doesn't beat Golden State unless they add someone else. I think even now we don't fully understand just how utterly loaded Golden State is. They have 2 players more impactful than Irving on their team and behind them they have legit stars as well. They are just so good and i hate how unfair it is. I don't think I have ever seen such an unfairly stacked team in the NBA in all my years. Maybe the Bulls 1 year but GSWs are set to keep this group together for years and years.

2018 NBA Draft Loaded with Bigs!

I think the bigger issue is that, while this trade is fine for the Celtics absent context, it's a lot to give up when you consider what happened earlier this summer. They could have traded basically nothing for an arguably superior player in Jimmy Butler and just stood pat and drafted Fultz.

Injuries is the Great equalizer my friend.

Disagree. Irving is more impactful than anyone on GS, that includes KD. What makes GS so formidable is not one superstar, because there are no top 5 players on GS, but a multitude of really good players who play together.
I love green, but let's see how much he has left in 2 years. Ditto KD. Both those guys will be worse in 2019 than they are now. Whereas the C's core will be younger and still improving. Curry was nothing his 1st year. it takes time to develop. And who knows if Anthony Davis will be wearing green in 2 years?
