CB Aqib Talib re-signs (with Patriots) for One Year

The patriots offered him a multiyear and a single year deal and he chose the latter

Glad to see it's a 1 year deal. Gives him a chance to prove the bad stuff is behind him.

Now on to SeaBass.:rocker:

Has Seabass received any rumored attention from other teams? I feel like he has been invisible since UFA began?

CORNER
We have Talib who has been injured half his time with the patriots.
We have Dennard who may or may not be as good as his rookie year.
We have Dowling who has been injured twice who has never produced.
We have Arrington who is a fine nickel back, but is not a backup outside corner.

And you say that we don't need another corner? I expect us to sign a couple of more, who can be competition and be viable backup at outside corner. I also expect us to draft a corner or a safety early.

You left out the key point. McCourty contributes in a pinch. And, I don't understand the point about Dennard. He is no more, and no less, a question mark than any other player who can come in and do less than what he did last year. They have 3 starting caliber CBs on the team, one who is good in the slot, and a high draft pick who can't stay healthy.

McCourty contributes in a pinch with a serious effect on the quality of safety play. If we don't believe this, we should have McCourty at CB and sign and/or draft a safety as andy has been suggesting.

I think Wilson still deserves another shot as the starter and as the future. He may have been torched at time last year, but did flash potential.

I agree he was beat twice last year not exactly unexpected for a rookie to make a poor decision either. Not to mention the time he got beat the worst it was actually Ebner who had the deep coverage.

I think A Wilson is perfect for early downs in a base, then move him up to hybrid LB/S in the sub package and insert Wilson deep next to McCourty.

Other than Reed there is no way we'd add another safety. And if we did add Reed you can be assured Gregory would be cut same day.

Talib staying means McCourty stays at FS. We're not going to demote Dennard to 4th CB which would be what would have to happen to start Talib/McCourty because we have $16 million reasons to put Arrington in the slot.

The roster will breakdown IMO

1. Talib
2. Dennard
3. Arrington
4. Dowling
5. Draft Pick

1. McCourty
2. Gregory/Reed

1. A Wilson (Reed would platoon here if signed)
2. T Wilson

This may seem silly but any chance the Pats follow up the Talib signing with a Grimes signing? I just want Arrington as far away from starting on the outside as possible and right now he's one injury/suspension from doing so.

I think everyone's waiting on the Long contract to set the market for OTs.

Will Dennard do any jail time?

Asomugha would make more sense. Grimes is more of a zone corner. If Grimes came in and McCourty stayed at safety, our secondary would be a mess.

Glad he's here -- I'm really liking the team's moves so far.

But I think it also means he'll be looking to cash in next year.
Hopefully Denard improves and Ras-I contributes so we aren't in a bad secondary situation the year after.

If T. Wilson works out, he can be part of the 3 safety rotation moving forward. A. Wilson's seemingly on the decline, and probably won't be around much longer. Gregory's contract makes him an unlikely candidate for release this year, but next year is a different story. Ebner isn't in the equation until he demonstrates otherwise. So, if they draft the safety this year, they can bring him along slowly, unless/until his play forces the issue. Next year's 3 man safety group if T. Wilson pans out:

2013 Rnd 1 rookie
McCourty
T. Wilson

Taking a safety in round 1 isn't happening period, point, blank.. What you're suggesting is to bring a young safety along slow. That is what A. Wilson and Gregory allow us to do with Wilson.

Normally your posts are educated and likely but I cannot see us dedicating 12% of our 53 man roster to the safety position even if McCourty could swing to CB.

You don't understand the salary cap, do you?

We will draft a safety if we don't sign another FA

No I understand it what I am saying is the only way we add another safety is if we added Ed Reed in which case they'd cut Gregory otherwise we will go with the current group.

And I only say that because Reed is a unique situation. But we will not carry 6 safeties because we also have Dowling who could play it and Malcom Williams will like be on our PS.

The cap

What happens if we cut Gregory? $

That's why we would not, even if we signed Reed

I think they would cut him and save the $500 thousand. Obviously not ideal but that's why I could only see it as a possibility if it was for Reed.
