Butler's agent in search for 1st rounder + big contract

Can't say I feel bad for Butler, since he appears to be incredibly stupid and stubborn. He has 52 teammates who can all recommend a trusted agent who is ethical and knows every GM in the NFL. Instead he goes with some guy with zero NFL ties who is now introducing himself to receptionists in NFL offices in between ambulance chasing.

Wrong time to call Saul, buddy. Should have taken this more seriously and thought through your decision...now you are really screwed and at the mercy of the Patriots, who will likely trade you to a bottom feeder, and you might find that asking for Gilmore money in 2017 comes with a few face palms.

Sorry to sound so callous, but wtf was he thinking.

Is that supposed to be some slight against the winningest coach in NFL history? If so, weak.

Money does talk. That's why Butler has a tender of $4 million, a big step up from the $500,000 he was getting.

But ego and money and a big play three years ago means zero when your a RFA who's only really played two seasons in the NFL. You have no leverage. And you don't make demands and expect them to come true when you have no leverage.

No i'm just saying Bill can cover up and plug holes in most places but in the modern day NFL you need guys who can cover or you can't survive playoff games with a bunch of JAGs covering, you lost Ryan, you're lose probably going to lose Butler.

If Gilmore doesn't play at an elite level, your secondary could turn into a complete disaster overnight.

If you lose Butler and Ryan and gain Gilmore, that's a downgrade on what you had last year as we sit today.

The Gilmore signing looked a lot better when he was going to be paired with Butler, not replacing him.

That's certainly a possibility, but fact is we don't know what they are thinking. They may see keeping Butler as an impossibility and they may very well be happy with #32 today instead of nothing tomorrow. Or they may want to keep him for this year and just see how it all plays out.

I would be dissapointed with that pick. I am hoping some nfc team's get in the mix.

I don't think it will come to that. Butler will be dealt to another team by then.

Theoretically however, the Pats have leverage to tag him if they deem it neceasary
So you want to let Garoppolo walk for nothing in order to keep Butler. Got'cha.

Gilmore has all the tools to play at an elite level. He's no slouch. They can also draft a corner or go look at someone. Still some corners out there if bill want's to take a look.

Not sure why you say this. He is hardly the first agent to advise his client to turn down short term guaranteed money for long term future gains.

Unrestricted free agency is where the money is at. Sure, it's a gamble but this is hardly an unprecedented situation we are seeing here or any sort of major gaffe on the part of Butler's representation.

He went to the Pats after 1 season as a starter and asked for a top market deal.. No good agent would do this. Every experienced agent knows if you go to a team looking for a new deal while they are still years on the contract that it means you take less to buyout those years.

People really need to go look at Gronk's extension 2 years into his rookie to deal to see how the whole taking less to get a bump now works and he did that after he had the greatest season by a TE ever.

He should fire his agent. He won't be calling the shots here. He won't be the one to choose the team if multiple teams are interested.

Beyond that, his agent has zero common sense. As someone stated, if teams wanted to pay $13M a year, or "Gilmore" money to a CB, they would have signed Gilmore. Yet he is asking for the same price tag PLUS giving up their first round pick! You have to be kidding me. There is a reason why first round tenders are rarely challenged by other teams, and that's exactly why, because you are going to need to sign the player to a megadeal and give up your most valuable franchise building tool in your first round draft pick. If Butler's agent had any iota of how the NFL works, he would be calling teams and telling them Butler is open to a team friendly deal, provided it is long term and gives reasonable guarantees. It's absurd to be calling teams and advertising that the player's demands are exactly why they don't want any part in this.

Is there any evidence that any of these rumors and leaks have any veracity?

If he wanted out, why not sign the tender and let BB trade him to NO. A trade was the best way out - the RFA route much more difficult due to the first round pick.

Didn't the latest CBA do away with all that? IIRC a player now has to show up for work 30 days before the first game to tally their accrued season. (What I'm not sure about is the deadline for signing a RFA tender.)

No, apparently it didn't.

There is a clause (not new) that says that if an RFA hasn't signed his tender by 6/15, the team can reduce the offer to 110% of their prior-year salary and still keep their rights to the player.

I wonder if they could get him for a similar contract to the one Chris Harris Jr. signed. That should be the ceiling.

Chris Harris's severely underpaid and butler wants to make more than him

This is a GOOD thing. It's the agent's job. He will quickly find out that the market doesnt value butler as a top cb, even without the rfa factor.

Throw in a first round pick requirement and he's probably looking at 4 years 30m at best. Those first tound picks are gold.

If he does sign the tender, he may be traded if a team and butler could come up with a satisfactory extension. Not sure a team would trade a lot for a 1 year rental only.

So this is good. It will hopefully inform him of his true market value. Which will probably shock him.

There are a whole lot of people here bagging on the agent without any evidence of the agent having done anything wrong.

Gilmore quit on the field against the Patriots, go watch Hogan torching him, he stopped chasing

Didn't stop Belichick from paying him, people look at a bigger picture than a couple of plays.

I remember that play, by Gilmores reaction it seemed he expected some sort of help over the top

So what's the no result?
My prediction Malcom comes to his senses and comes back this seasons.
Is his agents family or something? Geez

If you personally had the seasons that MB had..won us a SB ect...and saw someone bring in someone else to take your spot getting paid top 4 CB $$...you would be a little pissed off no matter what situation.
Won us SB. So every other player playin 18 and half games didnt do nothing to get pats to the moment when he made that INT.
