Butler's agent in search for 1st rounder + big contract

I got it, he got his money, but will he enjoy playing for the Browns?

I do not think so, losing 13-14 games a season is no joke.
If he is the type of player who, like many other players, looks at this as a job and as a business then he may be perfectly happy with his new deal and his team.

I've noticed how a lot of people in here want to have it both ways. People always say "it's a business" when the Patriots make a tough choice. Well, it's a business for the players too. Some players value winning over money. But some players value money over winning (I've noticed this feeling is more prevalent from the players who, like Collins, already have a ring). He may very well be more happy with $50 million on a 5-11 team than $35 million on a 13-3 team.

He seems imcredibly greedy he should be grateful he was at a damn Popeyes chicken. O team had him on there radar and we are the only team that would give him a fair chance to compete.

We don't know what the heck happened. It could be NE playing hardball, it could be Butler being greedy, it could be his agent giving him bad advice.

Exactly.

And we win so many games every single year because Bill know this better than anyone.

He will never pay what Butler wants. Can you imagine the precedent?

Seems to me that Butler is doing to the Patriots what the Patriots do to players all the time. Anything you've done for me in the past is irrelevant.

No surprises here I would be surprised if a contender didn't bite Butler would be a nice piece to the equation. Butler have earned a payday.

Thr eagles would be a nice destination. They got the offense. Add a defensive piece.

I can see this is how the scenario played out. BB tried to extend Butler. Butlers agent came in and demanded 14-16 Million per year. BB explained to him how RFA works. Butlers agent refuses to budge. BB walks away and in a matter of hours had a deal worked out for Gilmore, and pulls the trigger on the deal. Now Butlers agent comes back and again demands huge money. BB tells him to take a hike. Remember the deal for Gilmore was made quick and fast. Just surmising but it looks like Butlers agent tried to play hardball with the wrong guy.
You make it sound like Butler is up the creek without a paddle. He is 1 year away from free agency and will make almost $4 million in the meantime.

As I said in a previous post, Butler is hardly the first player to turn down short-term guaranteed money in exchange for chasing a big payday down the road. It's a gamble, no doubt about it.... but this is hardly some sort of epic gaffe on the part of Butler's representation.

You have GOT to be kidding me. You don't think agents go to teams looking for new deals following a client's good season??

Happens all the time. In this case, no deal was signed so it's silly to criticize and agent for asking for more money.

It's funny how clueless you come off...

First off, I never said agents don't go looking for deals after 1 good season. My point is agents don't go asking for top of the market deals after 1 good season and that's what Butler's agent did.

You mean Gronk, the guy who the entire planet agrees is significantly underpaid? Nothing says "brilliant agent" like having the best TE in football be paid far, far less than his market value.

Seriously you are absolutely clueless. He gave up some money because he signed the f**king deal 2 years into his rookie contract and bought out the the last 2 to get a bump.

So using your logic the guy that has 1 client in the nfl and that happened by chance asking for top of the market money 1 year into his client being a starter is brilliant? If the top agent in football Drew Rosenhaus conforms to the "gotta take less, to get a bump or wait for UFA" maybe this guy that has zero clue on how the nfl works should conform to it too.

If Asante Samuel caught the interception the JAG WR would of never had a chance to make the play and after Welker dropped the ball the Pats had plenty of chances to stop them driving down the field.
So? That doesn't change anything. If this, if that.

I can understand what you think.

In Collins' case, according to Lombardi, he was abandoning some of his assignments just for stats (to increase his value). As we already know, Bill didn't want any part of that **** and shipped his ass. So, in the end, Collins got his money, good for him. And in this case, the play value money over winning. I wouldn't want to play for the Browns. I would choose a winning environment. And you are being generous, Browns winning 5 games a year? This is outrageous.

Nonetheless, in Butler's case, this is a business, and Bill is operating properly. Butler is not an UFA yet. He has no power right now, they can't play hardball, it is what it is.

If you want to see clueless, just look in the mirror.

No ****, Sherlock. He took short term security in exchange for long term potential gains. It's a decision athletes make all the time in all sports. Butler is making the same decision right now.

It cannot be doubted that Gronkowski has overperformed his contract and has 3 years left on what can only be described as extremely club-friendly. You're a moron to sing the praises of Gronk's agent while simultaneously ridiculing Butler's.

Butler had a great season (oh and by the way made a play that won NE a Super Bowl). His agent asked for more money, he was shot down.

Why people are treating this like some sort of colossal blunder on the part of the agent is a complete mystery.

If he is unhappy here and is sounds like he wants out..do we really want him back there with that attitude? Let him sign it and get our first round pick back.

Pats mishandled this one and it suck....**** I loved Butler (will still wear his jersey no matter where he goes). Could have had two of the best CBs in the NFL playing together. Sounds like it will be Gilmore and Rowe.

If they did a deal last year with Butler would they have even signed Gilmore?

It's an easy thing to say in the hypothetical but probably not quite so easy when you are the one who really has millions and millions of your own dollars on the line.

I agree.

I don't blame the Patriots for doing what they are doing, nor do I blame Butler for doing what he is doing (keeping in mind that has hasn't actually *done* anything yet such as hold out of the season). He is hardly the first athlete to choose between short term security and long term riches. And if it comes to it, he won't be the first athlete to choose between taking less to play with a winner versus maximizing his earnings with a bad team.

Butler's problem is that he vastly overestimates his value. He isn't that good or sought after. He'll see. He'll play for 4m then hit fa and won't get what he thinks he's due now.

Gronk signed a deal exchanging security for money. Ie he got paid and didnt have to worry about career ending injuries before he hit FA. So he's not underpaid. He's underpaid compared to a full FA gronkowski but he never was one.

I think Butler spent a lot of time with Mevis.

The precedent in NE has always been that if you want an early contract you leave a bit of money on the table. That is the price you pay for security. Otherwise they pay you peanuts and you can discuss your huge contract when free agency comes about. Gronkowski, Ty Warren etc chose the former. Wilfork, Mankins, McCourty chose the latter.

It's extremely rare outside of Brady to see top dollar extensions a year or two prior to unrestricted free agency here. I think Mayo might have been the only one?

Butler could have chosen that route and taken the 5 year $35m deal that was likely on the table. He didn't. Now he has to play out the year and wait for free agency. His choice. Gilmore waited 5 years too. Butler is annoyed as he was an undrafted free agent and is slightly older. He will be 28 next offseason with this being only his 4th year in the league. Has one shot at a big contract and his agent knows it. That's why they are trying to maximize his value.

This agent is a donkey. Apparently doesn't understand Restricted free agent. 1st round tag means BB has a heads I win, tails you lose situation. Only way to win is give BB a #1 to go along with a tall CB who's as good or better, or come back and play well, if he wants FA bucks next year.

He couldn't have played it worse. Butler has no leverage now and probably a hit to his reputation.

Because given their cap situation they would make him play on the $3.9m this year.

He will end up doing that or not playing at all.

If Butler does not sign his tender by a certain date the Patriots have the right to drop the tender down to $600,000. I would say that the Pats are clearly in the drivers seat in this situation and Butlers rep is clearly in over his head.
