Butler visiting Saints

Possibly we'd even get more, depending on what the contract they sign him to is. If it's something the Pats could live with, they can tell the Saints, "We're just going to match it unless you sweeten the pot." That's what happened with Welker coming here, we only technically owed a 2nd rounder, but had to throw in a 7th to actually get him. I don't think the Dolphins had a real intention to match, but the extra pick was cheap enough for the Pats to throw it in to make sure.

That was not why we threw in the 7th at all.

That was in the days where poison pills were still allowed. The NE offer sheet was a total poison pill that MIA could not match. However, to prevent either Welker or MIA grieving it and maybe holding things up (or even a slight chance of getting it reversed), NE had second thoughts and instead worked out a plain old trade instead of going the offer sheet route, throwing in the 7th along with the 2nd.

Of course

But every indication is the trade is gonna be our 32nd pick back

Which I think we all can agree is garbage due to the fact that we literally already had that pick the other day

I disagree because I think the plan all along was to have Butler in that trade instead of our #32 and then his not signing the tender messed up the plan.

Is that true? Saints have 2 1st. Can't they give back 32nd as compensation?

Yes and no. They must give NE their #1 if they sign Butler as a RFA, but they are certainly capable of reaching a tentative agreement and then offering pick 32 in a trade.

As far as I'm aware, the team HAS to give up their OWN pick which would be #11 - they can't elect to send a different pick acquired from a different team instead.

That's only true if the Saints sign him to an offer sheet. If they work out a contract with Butler and a trade with NE so that Butler signs the tender, is traded, rips up his contract and signs the pre-agreed deal with NO, the pick can be anything mutually acceptable to NE and NO.

Is it even legal to make an offer to a restricted FA after the tender deadline? Me thinks not.
I think it is allowed until April 21st ( deadline for RFA to sign tender) because technically he is not under contract . While they tendered him at first round level, he is allowed to get an offer sheet by negotiating with other teams until that deadline.. I think......

EDIT Or did you mean the Pats offering a contract?? I think it is allowed but he doesn't have ot sign it, he could just sign the tender and be an UFA next year.

not like hearing about 2nd round picks for Butler...much rather have him next year at $4m paired with Gilmore...than a 2nd round pick

Brett Martel of the Associated Press reports restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler will visit the Saints on Thursday.

The news comes straight from Sean Payton. Butler was originally reported to be involved in trade talks which sent Brandin Cooks to New England, but he is not technically under contract because he has yet to sign his first-round tender. That tender gives the Patriots the ability to match any offer sheet and guarantees them a first-round pick if they decline, but it is possible the two teams skip the offer sheet process altogether and work out a trade if the Saints and Butler come to terms. New England sent New Orleans the No. 32 overall pick as part of the Cooks deal, but the Saints would owe their own No. 11 overall pick if they sign Butler to an offer sheet, which is likely a higher price than they are willing to pay. The Boston Herald reports Bulter "wants to make it work in New England," but the big-money signing of Stephon Gilmore all but ensures Butler's days with the Patriots are numbered.

I hope Butler stays for less $$. This way we have our cbs for a good amt of time.

These teams are trying to pull a fast one on bill. Exactly. I rather keep him.

If they offered this hang up the phone and throw it.

I was wanting to buy a new Ferrari for $20K but the dealer wouldn't accept my offer. Wonder why?

I'm not downplaying him, i think he is a legit #1CB. But it just doesn't make sense for the Saints to give him a top contract, plus give up the 11th pick when they could have gone after Gilmore or Bouye without having to give up their the 11th pick.

That depends on how they feel about Butler, in comparison to Bouye and Gilmore.

Why on earth are we settling for a 2nd rounder when we can get a 1st?? i have no clue what is happening here.
who said we could get a 1st? No team is going to sign Butler to a big contract and give up a 1st..that leaves a trade and so far we have rumors of a 2nd and a 3rd from the Saints and a 2nd from the Titans.
