Possibly we'd even get more, depending on what the contract they sign him to is. If it's something the Pats could live with, they can tell the Saints, "We're just going to match it unless you sweeten the pot." That's what happened with Welker coming here, we only technically owed a 2nd rounder, but had to throw in a 7th to actually get him. I don't think the Dolphins had a real intention to match, but the extra pick was cheap enough for the Pats to throw it in to make sure.
That was not why we threw in the 7th at all.
That was in the days where poison pills were still allowed. The NE offer sheet was a total poison pill that MIA could not match. However, to prevent either Welker or MIA grieving it and maybe holding things up (or even a slight chance of getting it reversed), NE had second thoughts and instead worked out a plain old trade instead of going the offer sheet route, throwing in the 7th along with the 2nd.
