I look to be in the minority, but I'd take the #11 pick over Butler on a large deal. But I wouldn't complain about Butler being re-signed, either.

Check this out :

What a snarky little *****. We all know he has limited FA right, dumbass, but the RESTRICTED piece makes all the difference. What a little prick talking down to us like that.

He's more right than wrong.

Look at all the people right here who have been saying for days and days that Butler is a whiner, etc. because he didn't sign his tender right away and is trying to get a better deal elsewhere. Those people in fact did forget about the "free agent" part of RFA.

Nah, he's more wrong than right. We know he's a "free agent" but unless the Patriots agree to it has can't go anywhere without us getting the team's #1 pick. All this talk about #32 - that could happen but unless the Patriots agree, Butler can't go to N.O. (this year) without #11 coming back.

Bottom line, he's way more Restricted than Free Agent right now.

He's not a whiner, he just has a stupid agent. He's "free" to solicit offers. He signs tender, gets offer and Pats can match it or take the #11.

Anything other that that, or play out his contract requires Pats to make a concession.

They would offer it because New England has leverage. Obviously, they would like to not have to agree with New England as well as agree on contract with Butler, but for that, they would have to pay a #1.

It has nothing to do with being desperate. If NE wants, they could say #11 or no deal. If they except #32, they decided that's what they want. That's leverage. Everything depends on what NE wants to do, unless NO sends #11.
As pointed out by others, NO has the leverage to refuse to offer #11, so from the standpoint of NE and NO it is like any other trade deal. Both sides have leverage over the other and each side can walk away from the table.

NE has the organizational philosophy such that they would like to get something for the player rather than just let him walk for nothing next year.

If they don't wanna give us 11 than give us 32 and our 3rd rounder rounder back. Pick 103

I might be tempted to do this deal if I'm Bill. Of course, I'd also try to get more if I could

Everyone has the option to not do a deal, to not get the player. That's not what you call leverage. They would force the Patriots to have a top corner play for well under market.

That's not leverage. It's heads I win, tails you lose. The only thing NO can do unilaterally, is sign him and pay the #11.

Just read that the point difference between 11 and 32 is equal to the 28th pick (680). Wow. If BB did that alone, I'd think it irresponsible to his team, honestly.

No, if he walks next year, they get a year of his services at cheap money and a compensatory pick.

He is a RFA and his agent is shopping him around as best as possible with what little ability theybhave to make a deal.

I'm still waiting for someone to explain to me how that is "stupid." But I do find it hilarious that the people who call the agent"stupid" think the smart thing to do is sign the tender in March.

That logic is dreadful. For all we know, Payton may well have communicated that he is willing to give up #32 but not #11, and BB may well feel that #32 is still better than one year of a grumbly MB.
The patriots are not allowed to discuss trading a player who is not under contract. Until he signs the tender they cannot discuss trading him.

And then lose him next year for nothing, which runs counter to NE's organizational philosophy.

Signing the tender is pretty much irrelevant.

And they could still trade him next year.
You can't franchise everyone. They may quite likely have bigger fish to fry with that tag.
