Glad Spikes made a difference today. What an enigma that guy is. The shovel pass stop was crucial and saved the game. This is exactly what I wanted to see from him. Positive plays and (please!) some consistency.
I watched vid from the Jets game this past week, and there were too many plays where Spikes was a non-entity and made the Jets running game look better than it is. One run where he got dominated, filled the wrong gap and gave up a TD. And he's a liability in coverage.
Still, he's our best hope at MLB and games like today are cause for optimism. He's still very young and young in the system. How many years did Bruschi take? Guyton sure isn't the solution.
I've been so depressed by our LB play recently, I spent this morning scouting Manti Te'o and Donta Hightower, thinking that maybe we need to find help in the draft. And, in case you care, my assessment is "Yes" on Te'o, who looks quick, strong and explosive, and "No" on Hightower, who looks big and powerful but stiff and kinda clumsy. I definitely think Spikes has better upside than Hightower. Te'o, though... wow. Put Te'o and Mayo on either side of Spikes, rebuild the secondary, and we're an elite D again.
