Brandon Spikes was beastly (merged)

Spikes is a wrecker.

But I don't understand why Fletcher isn't getting a chance to make some plays.

It seems like Guyton is just taking up space out there.

PREACH it, Brother Hood!! :rocker:

Last 2 weeks people have complained that he celebrates.

Loved what BB said in a football life, thought it would of silenced the people complaining about celebrating.

Spikes made one of the plays of the game on the 3rd and goal shovel pass. I've seen the replay several times and I think had he not been shooting that gap, it may have been a TD for the Cowboys.

Very impressed with the Def today(compared to my expectations), but I am curious about Dane Fletcher. I have not had a chance to watch the DVR yet, but I did not see him out there much.

Anyone have any insight on him? I know he had the thumb injury, but I would think that even with a bad thumb he could play better than Guyton.

Spikes was great and I don't mind the celebrating. Guyton is terrible, He watches the play go right by all the time. Sigh.

What was up with that shovel pass? Terrible call by the 'Boys and Spikes was all over it.

Ummm... the guy definitely had just as many bad plays as good. He definitely had a good 4th quarter, I'll give him that. But on a helluva lot of plays he just looks flat-out lazy. Doesn't even try, or takes awwful angles.

And I absolutely hate the way he celebrates wildly after everything.. just reminds me of Meriweather.

All in all, this thread is undeserved. The defense as a whole deserves props, but Spikes shouldn't be singled out.

Arrington if anyone is the one really surprising me.. this guy is flat-out turning into a very good cornerback. And he can tackle!

Spikes is forcing the issue, something that this team had lacked. Love it and need it.

Erm, nope. Guy was definitely a bright spot out there on defense today, your utterly unconvincing rejoinder notwithstanding.

I don't really get the whining about celebrations, either. It'd be one thing if he's celebrating tackles 5-10 yards down the field. But the guy has been a huge part in solidifying the run defense, even while having to play next to Guyton. If he's psyching himself and his teammates up, I can't fathom why there'd be any basis for criticism.

I have to believe that Spikes' play has been the primary factor in the consistent run defense post Mayo's injury.

I guess our friend drew here hasn't seen A Football Life. That should have put to bed any complaints about players celebrating good plays.

Glad Spikes made a difference today. What an enigma that guy is. The shovel pass stop was crucial and saved the game. This is exactly what I wanted to see from him. Positive plays and (please!) some consistency.

I watched vid from the Jets game this past week, and there were too many plays where Spikes was a non-entity and made the Jets running game look better than it is. One run where he got dominated, filled the wrong gap and gave up a TD. And he's a liability in coverage.

Still, he's our best hope at MLB and games like today are cause for optimism. He's still very young and young in the system. How many years did Bruschi take? Guyton sure isn't the solution.

I've been so depressed by our LB play recently, I spent this morning scouting Manti Te'o and Donta Hightower, thinking that maybe we need to find help in the draft. And, in case you care, my assessment is "Yes" on Te'o, who looks quick, strong and explosive, and "No" on Hightower, who looks big and powerful but stiff and kinda clumsy. I definitely think Spikes has better upside than Hightower. Te'o, though... wow. Put Te'o and Mayo on either side of Spikes, rebuild the secondary, and we're an elite D again.

When the players are healthy and on the field together, it's going to be

Wilfork
Haynesworth
Spikes
Mayo
Chung

working the middle of the field. Teams will not be doing a lot of running straight up against that group.

It's actually a good play call in that situation. It's like a screen that does not take as long to develop.

Spikes just stayed with his assignment and blew it up.

I haven't seen a LB play with that kind of edge, intensity or effectiveness for us since 2004. Spikes looked like a souped up Jeremiah Trotter in his prime.

Guyton was just as noticeable but for all the wrong reasons. He's been fine over the years for investing basically nothing in him. However, I find it hard to believe we don't have someone that could be more useful on the bench. Guyton tackles about as well as Asante Samuel.

Guyton is the least physical linebacker I can remember seeing in 40 years of watching football. He actively avoids contact. Saw him in pre-season last year actually turtle-down to avoid a block. He has safety speed but has bad hips, so he's not good in space. Fastest and weakest linebacker in his combine year. There's a reason he went undrafted. Smart and fast but weak, timid, and clumsy.

It's definitely a smart decision to repress the memory of Monty Beisel. I know I try to

But, yeah, I agree. Guyton has the athletic ability but lacks the instincts or aggression to succeed. It's become painfully obvious.

I don't love Guyton but his play on Witten today was excellent. He's bad getting off of blocks, but his press game is very good. He's a nice piece to have, but a real black and white difference in his pass vs run ability. When placed in situations to succeed he's actually pretty good. When doing everything else...yeah, he's pretty bad.

Personally i love it, good plays should be celebrated. brings energy to everyone else in my opinion. Him and Chung are both really high energy guys and you can see them being leaders on the field. Hope he builds on this and takes the next step!

Didn't people see A Football Life? BB encouraged people to celebrate and to congratulate others for making a play. Ho showed clips where people were too subdued and he was critical.

This was one of the things that surprised me -- people seem to assume that cold, non-emotional efficiency is what the team is about.

I've been thinking they should use him like the used Don Davis -- as a large strong safety.,
