Brady in the 2015 MVP Race

How many QB's who were MVP's actually won a SB recently?? The last time Brady won that thing we had an early Playoffs exit by Ryan and the Jets. Hoisting Lombardi > League MVP.

I don't always agree with Peter King, but in today's MMQB he states the truth: in any other season, Brady's performance would have him on his way to his third MVP, but this year it belongs to Cam Newton.
I disagree. IF Peyton Manning had put up the numbers Brady has put up, with the injuries to the offense, Manning would win the MVP. Brady leads the league in passing yards (more than 1000 yards more than Newton), has 2 more TD passes and 4 less INTs. If Manning had done that, plus leading an injured team (3rd most injured team) to 12 wins, they would be drooling all over him.

A few points...
-3 Weeks ago I posted that it was Cam's to lose.....and since then Newton has statistically dominated Brady each of the past 3 weeks
-I continue to read here that...."IF" Brady had healthy weapons things would be different.....and I don't doubt the NE offense would be tacking on 7-10 more points per game. That being said, let's not forget, with the exception of the TE..... Newton is chuckin it to JAGs and the success Newton is having as a pocket passer has most to do with defenses' fear that Newton will scramble out of the pocket. DE's aren't penetrating, they are sealing the edges...giving Newton all the time in the world. Even a garbage journeyman like Ted Ginn will eventually get open. Same thing happening in Seattle. DE's are playing contain and Wilson is feasting and his Jaggy WRs are looking All-Pro.
-The next two games are meaningless in terms of MVP relevance. Carolina might shut it down or not...doesn't matter. Newton will be judged on his 1st 14...having completed their mission ...1st round bye
-besides the perfect record...two better than Brady so far.......Brady coughed up a game (Philly) ....while Newton has steam rolled. Brady took a big step back that day.....and yes I know special teams was a major culprit as well.

Any other year..............

The answer to your question is literally like 5 replies before your post.

I think everyone can now agree that CAM NEWTON is the MVP. Even the biggest of homers would have to be dreaming to think that CAM is not worthy.

Another argument that hurts Brady's candidacy.....
-Gronk gets hurt in Denver....Patriots lose. Gronk sits out Philly...Patriots lose. Gronk returns Patriots win. I'm not going to call Gronk the MVP of NE but he is the X Factor. Without Gronk, Brady's stats, especially when he is forced to chuck it over the LBs and towards the edges....are pretty pedestrian.
Unfortunately for Brady and all players, you get judged for what is and not what might have been

Receivers will never win the MVP because their quarterback will inevitably win it instead, so Gronk (despite being worthy) will never win. All those Montana MVPs and the Young MVP can basically be read as Jerry Rice MVPs, but they went to the QB and the greatest football player of all-time never won the award.

I wonder how Cam would do if Greg Olson was injured.

It literally makes perfect sense. Sometimes there are more than one deserving candidate. Only one can win the award, but a very strong case can be made for more than one player. Newton has been amazing and would be a very deserving MVP winner, especially if they go 16-0. Brady has been just a little better, but the W/L category (which we all loved to tout in the Brady v. Manning battles) may be the deciding factor for Newton.

Don't make this harder than it is.

"Most valuable" means "most valuable", not VERY valuable. The W/L ratio is stupid, as it has a ton to do with other players on the team.

All you need to do is go back to the year Aaron Rodgers got more votes than Brady despite the Patriots having a better record and Brady leading the Patriots to the highest scoring offense by far in the league. Brady also had 6 rushing TDs that year (he has 3 this year) and the team had 26 rshing tDs total compared to the Packers 7 rushing TDs. Rodgers though had 5 more throwing TDs and therefore got the votes.

That's literally because without Gronk and Edelman there is nothing left to throw to. I mean, you could stick me and you out there at that point. Despite that, the Patriots still had big leads against Denver and it wasn't the offense that failed them.

We'll have to disagree. But since that's a hypothetical scenario, it's not very easy (i.e., virtually impossible) to debate it.

All I'll say is that Newton's stats are better than you allow. He's rushed for nearly 600 yards and seven TD's. Put all his stats (98.6 Pass Rating and his rushing yards and TD's) together with an undefeated season and I really don't think the scenario you are hypothesizing would come to pass...that's why I think King has it right (for once)..."any other season" and Brady's performance would make him the runaway MVP.

You're arguing that a guy who has scored 40 TOTAL TDs (yes, I'm using TOTAL, because Cam actually scored all of those TDs) in 14 games is a game manager. You're arguing that the player who is leading the #1 scoring offense and an undefeated team, is a game manager.

Huh?

That's not what I'm arguing whatsoever. You completely misinterpreted my posts if that's what you think.

Hats off to Cam Newton, he's been playing tremendously and he just sealed his MVP with that game against the Giants... 100 yards rushing and 5 TDs? Jesus....

I am still very confident that Brady will win AN MVP this year.

(Technically next year).

But again, you're adding stats in a way that just wasn't done in the past. I mean, I cited 2012 when Brady had 6 rushing TDs, and the team had 26 rushing TDs. Brady only had 5 fewer passing TDs than Rodgers, but the Packers only had 7 rushing TDs for the entire team the whole season.

Of course. And Brady and Newton's passing numbers also have a lot to do with other players. Football is the ultimate team game.

And "best" doesn't necessarily mean "most valuable".

You compared his season to the season of someone you called a game manager. What was I supposed to take out of that statement? So you AREN'T comparing Newton's season to Wilson's 2014 season? What exactly is it that you're arguing? Russell Wilson should have gotten MVP consideration last year?

Anyway, sure the TD total is more than Wilson (2014), but I'm just trying to say that context kinda matters (see: horrific schedule & defenses). I'm basically questioning the huge difference in media/fan reaction to the "MVP's" 2015 stats and a supposed "Game Manager's"' stats of 2014 by adding some context.

Maybe you're arguing Cam is only having a good year because he hasn't played a tough schedule?
