Well said! (And thanks to your team for the beat down of the Bills, good form.)

Counting regular season and playoffs Belichick tied Landry last night with 270 total wins and owns a currently a 680 win %. That is a great get for Bill and it has not been talked about like it should have been on here. Bill is 65 years old this year (birthday is in April). Something to keep in mind as he starts to really chase history. Ahead of Bill is....

George Halas - 324 wins (.671 win %)
Don Shula 347 wins (.665 win %)

I think it is fair to wonder how far up this list Bill can go. The Patriots hopefully have 10 games left to play this year. If they go 9-1 (dropping 1 regular season game) Bill ends the year at 279 wins (this assumes a Patriots super bowl win of course!)

279 would put him 45 behind Halas and 68 behind Shula. So how long will Bill need to coach to pass either?

The lets say the Pats are good for 14 wins a years on average (including 1 to 3 playoff wins)

He would pass Halas early in his 4th year.
He would pass Shula in the next 5 years.

Passing Halas to me seems very likely. I think the Pats can win an average of 14 games a year over the next 3 seasons and then 1 more season would lock it up pretty easy. They may not even need a 4th season if they have a particularly good year with 17 wins.

With Brady aging and the QB spot unknown after him for now we can't know if the Patriots will be able to keep that kind winning up once he retires or just loses a bit too much. This could mean BB may need to coach 6-7 more years to pass Shula and I don't think he has that in mind. 5 is a maybe and perhaps even unlikely.

If they work out the QB situation and the Pats really dominant the next few years and pad those wins even above my projections it might be possible BB beats Shula.

Personally now I hope BB coaches the next 5 seasons. I think trying to catch or pass Shula in that tight a window would be exhilarating. Can you imagine the Pats going into BB's last year and needing 13-15 wins to pass Shula? Wouldn't that make for some good drama?

I want that miserable SOB Shula to be alive to see it.

If I had to guess it probably won't happen. I think BB stays to ride out Brady who probably has 3 years left after this one. After that who knows.

I don't think BB walks if he thinks he has a very good chance to win a super bowl or get the HC win record in that year. I don't think he coaches if those things aren't the case. If Brady retires after 3 more years and he thinks he may need a few years to rebuild (and 3-4 years to pass Shula) I don't think he'll want to muddle through that just to get the HC wins record.

It is possible though if things fall right. If he really likes his next QB a lot or if Brady can defy father time till he is 45 year old who knows.

The problem is BB signals his future intentions with the emoting and signaling of a brick wall.
I recall a blurb saying BB didn't want to coach in his 70s or something to that effect. Assuming that is correct he has this season and 4 more in him. (no BB and TB? What a downer)

6+ seasons is a lot to assume.

But if Brady doesn't slow until 45 or he finds a future franchise QB then he has more than a good shot.

If he is willing to coach for 6 more seasons It's likely his unless both Brady fades fast (not looking likely) and he can't find a decent replacement quickly. Certainly possible but if he could win 11 with Cassell he could probably find a way to get the wins he needs.

I think Brady playing like a madman is going to push Belichick's retirement off further than he intended, if that already hasn't happened.

BB seems pretty healthy, he can still coach for several years if he wants to.

I tend to agree. IMHO when BB wants to walk he will, it's that simple.
I remember Brady's quote on BB "he's the most consistent man I've ever known". We are on to ____ is sometimes a punchline but I think it's zen for BB.

I don't sense BB has a deep care about winning more games than Shula. He certainly dpesn't seem to care about media adulation. BB seems laser focused on successful seasons that end in SB victories. Whatever records come from that may give him a smile but deep down he is ultimately saying 'it is what it is'.

In order to catch Shula, over the next 6 years Bill needs to average 13 wins per season.

Possible, but tough.
It would be shocking to see either one of those things happen. I doubt that Belichick wishes to coach for another 6-7 years, and asking for an average of 12-13 wins a year is ridiculous, at least with a QB who’s on the wrong side of 40.

Belichick will have to settle for 2nd place on this particular list, and we’ll be lucky to have witnessed that if it occurs.

I think it depends on if Shilla is dead or not. If he's not BB may keep going just to twist the dagger. "I'm getting closer Donny boy". After he passes him on the win list and if the old prick is still around BB may open a bunch of steak houses, branch them into Florida and start hiring ex-Shilla cooks. "Hey Cookie.....Remember Welker wasn't **** until he worked for me. And why would you want to cook for some old fart that hasn't won **** in half a century? " He would then advertise, "Why eat 2 time when you can eat 5 time?"

"Belichick's.......We have more wins.......more Championships......and better Steaks"

"Boom Shaka Laka" (I guess Brady partnered up)

Bill Belichick has 270 total wins including playoffs. Next in line among active coaches is Andy Reid with 190. Then John Fox with 139. Just amazing.

Don Shula: 2-4 in Super Bowls with 3 HOF QB's.

BB: 5-2 in Super Bowls with 1 GOAT.

Don Shilla has 1 Super Bowl appearance per 58 wins.

BB has 1 Super Bowl appearance per 37.5 wins.

BB does more with less. Numbers don't lie. I'll bet he cooks a better steak too.

There's about a zero percent chance of Belichick caring if he passes Shula or not. He's already got more Super Bowl wins than Shula ever had, he did it in a more difficult era, he's highly regarded as the best since the guy the trophy is named after (and I think the majority opinion is he's better).

The goal is to win a Super Bowl. I don't think he would care if he lost the ability to do that.
