First a little trivia. This game featured two players who both replaced Drew Bledsoe as their team's starting quarterback: Tom Brady and Tony Romo.


The Patriots led 13-3 midway through the second quarter, but were shut down until their final drive of the game. Both offenses had a mistake-filled first quarter, then Dallas took their first lead of the game with 5:13 left to play on a 26-yard Dan Bailey field goal.

The Cowboys took possession with 3:36 left to play, but the Pats defense forced a three and out. In a ten-play, 80-yard drive, Tom Brady completed eight passes and ran for a first down on a quarterback sneak. With just 22 seconds left to play, Brady threw an 8-yard touchdown pass to Aaron Hernandez for the winning points.

The classic performance was the 32nd time in Brady's career that he led the Patriots to a victory following a fourth quarter deficit or tie. Brady was 8-9 for 78 yards on the drive.

With the victory, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady earned their 116th win as a head coach-quarterback tandem. That tied Don Shula and Dan Marino for most wins as a HC-QB duo since the 1970 AFL-NFL merger. Their .779 winning percentage is also the best since the merger, over John Madden-Ken Stabler (.756), Mike Ditka-Jim McMahon (.754) and Tony Dungy-Peyton Manning (.753).

As familiar as a Brady-led, game-winning drive may have appeared, it was far from inevitable. In addition to being sacked three times - twice by DeMarcus Ware, once by Marcus Spears - Brady had those two picks. The second came with 9:19 to play in the fourth and the score tied 13-13, when Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee (game-high 12 tackles) stepped in front of a pass intended for Hernandez.​

Dallas took its first lead on the ensuing drive, when Dan Bailey hit a 26-yard field goal to make it 16-13 with 5:16 to play. New England then went three-and-out, punting the ball away with 3:46 to play.​

After trading three and outs, New England got the ball back at the 20-yard line with 2:31 to play. Immediately, Brady went to work.​

He completed a 16-yard pass over the middle to tight end Aaron Hernandez, an 11-yard strike to Rob Gronkowski while being hit and a 5-yard pass to wide receiver Wes Welker to move them to the 48-yard line at the 2-minute warning.​

Brady completed two more passes and then ran a quarterback keeper on third down to keep the chains moving. A 13-yard pass over the middle to Danny Woodhead allowed Brady to find Hernandez in the end zone for an 8-yard touchdown and the win with 22 seconds left on the clock.​

Hernandez was Brady's final read on the play. He first looked to Welker and Deion Branch, but noticed that Dallas had combination coverage on both receivers. Gronkowski was double-teamed, which left him with Hernandez.​

The Dallas Cowboys turned the game over to their defense in the final minutes, trusting Rob Ryan's game plan to shut down the Patriots one more time.​

It was the 32nd successful comeback of Brady's career in games the Patriots trailed or were tied in the fourth quarter. And it came against a solid defense - ranked fourth in the NFL - that had allowed just one touchdown on the Patriots first nine possessions.​

This time, the defensive tackle didn't commit a penalty as he did last season on Folk's failed 56-yard try in overtime that gave the kicker another chance — a 42-yarder that gave the Jets a 30-27 win.​

Danny Amendola hasn't lived up to the $28.5 million, five-year contract he signed before last season but caught a 19-yard touchdown pass — just his fifth reception this season — that gave the Patriots a 27-19 lead.​

The Jets got inside the New England 30 on all four of their first-half possessions. But they managed just four field goals by Folk, covering 22, 47, 46 and 27 yards.​

The Patriots went three-and-out on two of their possessions in the half but made the most of the other two as Brady threw touchdown passes to Vereen -- a 49-yarder on their fourth offensive play and a 3-yarder that made it 14-9 with 4:22 left in the half.​

After Folk's fourth field goal, the Patriots got the ball with 55 seconds remaining in the half. On third-and-10 at the New York 44, Antonio Allen was called for defensive pass interference on Amendola, putting the ball at the 12.​

An unnecessary roughness penalty against guard Jordan Devey pushed the ball back to the 27. After a 6-yard run by Vereen, Gostkowski kicked a 39-yard field goal on the last play of the half.​

- Shane Vereen provided Brady’s biggest threat on the night with 118 total yards and two touchdowns. He registered 12 carries for 47 yards and five receptions for 71 yards and two scores.​

- The Jets gashed New England for 218 yards, rotating between Chris Ivory and Chris Johnson. They didn’t punt until the third quarter. If they had finished one of their first four scoring drives (all resulted in field goals), they probably would have emerged from Gillette with the win.​

- With no Jerod Mayo, there are certainly some concerns going forward. This is a run defense that had already given up 207 yards to Kansas City and 191 to Miami with Mayo.​

- The Patriots defense allowed this thing to become wayyyyy too interesting for Bill Belichick's liking, as Geno Smith dinked-and-dunked his way down the field to set up a game-winning field goal attempt from Nick Folk. Chris Jones saved the day, though, swatting the ball down, letting the Gillette crowd exhale.​

It was a major struggle, but the Pats managed to escape their divisional showdown against the Jets with a win by the skin of their teeth.

The Patriots’ defense is an abomination – We knew that things would go into flux with Jerod Mayo lost for the season but the Patriots were absolutely horrendous on defense in this game and have a ton of work to do to get their multitude of issues on that side of the ball straightened out. The Jets, who rushed for 31 yards as a team last week against Denver, dominated the Pats’ front seven, rushing for 218 yards at over five yards per attempt. It was a complete thrashing at the line of scrimmage, so thorough that even Mayo at full health wouldn’t have been able to offer much help.​

The Pats couldn’t get off the field on third down, allowed scoring drives of 12, 10, 12, nine, 11 and 12 plays and let the Jets basically walk down the field and into position to attempt the game-winning kick with one minute and no timeouts left. Considering how bad the Jets were on offense leading up to this game, the Pats’ defensive struggles look even worse in the aftermath. For their sake, they’d better hope that the short week caused them to be a step slow and the extra time to recover and get back to work before they host the Bears a week from Sunday will allow them to get back to at least close to normal on D.​

Despite injuries, the offensive line continues to hold up – With the exception of two lousy second half possessions when Marcus Cannon spelled Nate Solder and Sebastian Vollmer at either tackle spot, Tom Brady (20-of-37, 267 yards, three TDs, 103.5 passer rating) stayed mostly clean and had ample time to survey the field and make all of his reads more often than not. The interior of the O-line, which was missing both Bryan Stork and Dan Connolly due to concussions, was particularly impressive, with Josh Kline and the much maligned Jordan Devey joining Ryan Wendell, who has been a stalwart since late in the Kansas City game, looking tough and even commanding at times. It was another encouraging week for the position group that looked to be this team’s fatal flaw just three weeks ago.​

Apparently October 16 is not a good day for the Bengals when they play the Patriots.

New England was on the brink of going 2-4 - with three tough games ahead - and the Pats were staring into the abyss.

A 2-4 team on a three-game losing streak had to play the best team in the conference, undefeated at 6-0.


Cincinnati was on their way to the #1 seed in the AFC playoffs, and a Super Bowl appearance. Which makes this Patriot turnaround a surprise, even if it was at home. The Pats jumped on Cincy for a 20-0 lead early - and forced six turnovers. Doug Flutie played mistake-free football and completely outplayed the eventual league MVP, Boomer Esiason. The Bengals rallied late, but the Patriots held on to win 27-21.

Jim Bowman, Tim Jordan, Fred Marion, Rod McSwain and Johnny Rembert all had an interception, and Marion also had a fumble recovery.

Tony Collins had 115 yards from scrimmage and rushed for two touchdowns, leading the Patriots to an upset victory over the Chargers. Dan Fouts threw for 357 yards, but that was not enough.

The Pats overcame a 21-10 halftime deficit, outscoring the Chargers 27-0 in the last thirty minutes.

The Patriots never turned the ball over, while the defense recovered three fumbles and also picked Fouts off once.

It's not every day that a team gains five times as many yards rushing as their opponent.

It's not every day that despite that stat the game goes down to the wire.


The Patriots rushed for 256 yards while limiting San Diego to 53 yards on 19 carries. Despite that fact, it came down to a Tony McGee strip-sack fumble recovery with less than four minutes to go to seal the win for the Patriots.

Two plays later Steve Grogan hit Don Hasselbeck for a four-yard TD pass, to give the Patriots a 24-13 lead with 3:09 left to play. But four plays later Bill Munson threw a touchdown pass to Charley Joiner, and the Chargers were within four points. On the ensuing drive the Patriots were able to grind out two first downs, and run out the clock for the win.


In case anyone here never saw Sam Cunningham play, this game is a good example that explains why old timer Pats fans revere him. Sam carried the team on his shoulders on a day that Steve Grogan threw for just 83 yards. Number 39 had 141 yards rushing on 25 carries, and added 41 yards on five receptions. The Patriots had 325 yards of offense - more than half of which came thanks to Sam Bam.

Patriots 43, Raiders 43


This was a wild game that the Patriots should have won against an inferior opponent. The Pats were one of the best teams in the league, entering this game with a 4-0-1 record. The Raiders were still a couple of years away from becoming a powerhouse, winless through five games. Journeyman Cotton Davidson, he of a 19-33-1 career record, threw four touchdown passes for the Raiders.


With just 48 seconds remaining in the game, Babe Parilli threw a touchdown pass to Larry Garron - and then completed a pass to Jim Colclough for a two-point conversion, giving the Pats a three-point lead.

Thanks to a good kickoff return and a pass interference penalty though, Oakland was able to move down the field and kick a game-tying field goal.

This game, plus an upset loss to the Jets two weeks later cost the Patriots the AFL East title. That denied the Pats a chance of a rematch with San Diego in the AFL title game - a team the Pats beat 33-28 earlier in the season - and the Bills won the first of two (and their only) championships.

On October 16th against the Oakland Raiders, Babe Parilli threw for 422 yards and four touchdown passes in a 43-43 tie in the most exciting game in the Patriots history at Fenway Park.​

In that game, the Patriots were a badly whipped club until halfway through the third quarter; outplayed completely and absolutely out of contention. They were victimized by Raider quarterback, Cotton Davidson, a man who had only thrown four touchdowns in five losing games. Davidson took complete command early in the second quarter. At the half he had thrown for three touchdowns and had his team out in front, 24-14. As the third quarter progressed, he steered his club to 10 more points and Oakland was leading by a 34-14 bulge.​

But as quickly as the Raiders were out in front, the Patriots started slamming back, had breaks go their way, and scored three touchdowns in the space of six minutes. And with the fourth quarter half gone, the Patriots found themselves holding a 35-34 lead. Davidson, in only four plays, one of them a 53-yard bomb to Bo Roberson, grabbed the lead right back. The Patriots caught a break because Davidson then missed Art Powell in an attempt to pass for the two point conversion, and the margin was only five points.​

After the Pats failed to move and were forced to punt, Oakland got the ball back and their drive stalled. The Pats blocked a Mike Mercer field goal attempt and they were again on the move with momentum clearly on their side. They came up with the play of the game to make the day even more spectacular.​

Parilli was back on the Boston eight yard line and completed a pass to Jim Colclough at midfield. Colclough ran about eight yards with the ball and lateraled off to Gino Cappelletti who ran for five more. Just as he was stopped, he tossed it to Ron Burton who made it down to the Raider 31.​

Parilli then hit Cappy for another first down on the 10 yard line. Parilli lobbed a flare pass out to Larry Garron on the right, a play which had worked all night, and Garron galloped in for his third touchdown. With only 47 seconds left, Parilli put the Patriots up by three with a pass to Colclough for the two point conversion.​

Oakland was in a desperate position, with room for only a couple more plays. On the first one, with the Raiders at midfield following the kickoff, Davidson hoisted a long pass to his favorite target, Art Powell. To the delight of the crowd, Powell didn't get close to catching the overthrown pass. Out came a flag. Pass interference called on the Patriots at the Boston 30 yard line. This time, Oakland kicker Mike Mercer connected for 38 yards to knot the game at 43 each as time ran out.​

It was a great and exciting game and Babe Parilli found himself connecting for 422 passing yards, and making 25 completions in 47 attempts. The number of passes thrown was a team record and the number of completions tied a team record.​
