For those that dk or remember ...

The “Parcells Rules”

  • He must be a senior. No.
  • He must be a graduate. No.
  • He must be a three-year starter. No.
  • He must have at least 23 wins. No.

The “extras”

  • He must start 30 games. No.
  • He must complete 60% of his passes. Winner winner chicken dinner!
  • He must have a 2:1 TD-to-INT ratio. Are 30 touchdowns to 1 interception good?

I prefer the Bill Walsh rule. Draft a quarterback every year. It's by far the most important position and the hardest to project from college. If it means burning through a few draft picks or hitting on a guy but not being able to sign him to a big contract because you've already got a starter, so what? When you need a quarterback, you really need a quarterback!

Do those first few criteria really apply to many QBs anymore? Seems like the vast majority of talented QBs come out once they're able. Sometimes they stay another year, but even then, they're not usually a graduate by draft day...

Honestly don't have any stats on that but id bet a lot more guys are coming out early, if they can.

And I'm more concerned with the last two (that Lance passes) as opposed to the first couple. You gotta roll with the times.

Agreed. I'd even go as far as 1 pick every draft in the top 100-125. Make it a priority.

I have no problem giving a QB prospect a 3rd-4th round if I feel like he can be a legit, career backup. A guy I feel that could be like Fitz, McCown, Foles etc. I have np giving that prospect a high grade just bc how important that role is.

Being called on to win 2-3 games could be the difference between the playoffs or not. Good backups know their role for the most part even though they want a shot. Helping the starter out any way they can. They take it personally to help a guy get better. Idk I value a guy that can stay in the league getting paid and not playing for the most part.

If either Lance and/or Fields are still available at #15, then I'm trading down to some sucker team...
That's why you're on a Message Board with you FAUX Championship rings and BB will be in the draft room with his 8 Rings..

I used the search feature but just haven't found a good write-up in this thread on Patrick Surtain. Has there been one?

As I look at a lot of the mocks, it seems Surtain is the one stud left at the Patriots slot before a fall off to players who are variously pegged between the 1st and 2nd round). In other words, Surtain is the last of the absolute first rounders available.

Nah I've been working too much. From my notes ....
+ footwork & jam/hands at the los - in route - very smooth/light feet for a bigger guy. Efficient. Gives him mirror ability with certain guys on certain routes. At times very subtle impeding or hindering a WR's stem. At times not so subtle, he's a physical CB who isn't afraid to play that way .... Ideal for bigger WR's even TE. He welcomes that size, he's a bigger guy so it makes sense.

+ Smarts/football IQ - no hesitation to do the right thing. Peeling off/Match, sniffing out a fake or making a play on misdirection. He'll run a few routes a game for a WR. He's his daddy's son and plays like it. Awareness, confidence, he plays like a pro.

Very comfortable close to line, taking away the flats/sidelines. Anything short/intermediate is tough if he gets his hands on you. Really good job of steering the play when/after that happens.

Solid, sound tackling ability, almost teach tape for DB's.

Matchup guy that can bounce around between big slot & big boundary. You don't want him on movers & shakers. Doesn't have the acceleration or long speed to hang with those types. Matchup/specific.

I don't believe I'll have a first on him or any DB tbh. I really like him & Horn as guys who can line up across from the bigger, more physical WR's in the league and even some TE's. Both could be great in the right system, with coaches who understand them and are creative enough/have enough pull to utilize them correctly.

Thanks.

Wow, on not having him as a first. Seemed he's being mocked pretty highly. I guess speed is a must for 1st round DBs.

It happens every year. I'll be terrified looking at and putting my grades out. Seeing 40 guys with 1st round grades and I only 8 or 12 lol. I don't mind it's part of the fun.

And yea DB's are one of the positions you really want to have testing #'s to look at when evaluating a corner or S.

One of the reasons the "USC or OSU" never produces QB is nuts. Mentioned this myself here but Haskins/Fields ran two different offenses.

If they were interested in trading up for a WR, I think Chase would be the guy. Does everything well for where he’s at in his career, a technician, crisp route runner, and an excellent route tree already coming out of college.
