Are Patriots Tanking or is this a “Bridge Year”?

I think they are tanking.
Patriots version of “the process” used by sixers

Evidence:

1. Signing Jacoby Brissett
2. Not addressing OL adequately in draft or free agency
3. Trading Judon
4. Drafting Maye who they know will take years to develop
5. Resigning their own average free agents to multiyear contracts
6. Hiring the most inexperienced head coach and DC in the league

I agree with the strategy. They desperately need infusion of blue chip talent over several years and top 5 picks is surest way to do this.

The attempt to sign Ridley or Aiyuk would not have moved the neeedle

Failure to prioritize OL rebuild is surest sign of tank
Quitting on the season already. Go root for the Jaguars then.

Oh they’re tanking all right.

As yet another example: Gilmore signs with Vikings and not with NEP.

The team is tanking. Acknowledging that doesn’t make you less of a fan. The teams we will face tried $50,000,000 harder than we did to fiscal winning team.

Dugger
Peppers
Rham
Barmore assuming he's able to play again.
Gonzalez needs to play a full season before anointing him.

That's it. It's a pretty brutal list.

Yep.

Even worse when one considers that Uncle Dugg isn’t worth ****ing close to what he was just paid, and Gonzo’s pro resume consists of a whopping four games… And if Onwenu stays at RG then he’s inefficiently overpaid as well.

First the team is not tanking second the OP likes Mac more than Maye.

Of course they are tanking. They traded their best player and left 50mill of cap space on the table. Why would you not sign players better than the 4 win team you have unless you are tanking?
They what from 4 wins with the most cap space in the league to a worse roster than last year. On purpose.

Who cares wether he's guard or tackle we absolutely needed to keep him and earned what we paid him so I would say he's paid appropriately.

I wish we inefficiently overpaid for a LT too.

The Collaboration crew is trying to make the owner happy but losing will undermine saving them some money so they aren't going to tank.

No, they already have tanked. They will try to win games in Sundays, but they are playing with about 60% of a team, talent wise, and spending of resources wise.
They will try to win, but they have one hand tied behind their back. Thats the tank.

You tank for a chance at Caleb, Daniels, or Maye. You don't tank for a LT.

In the case they tanked to save money.
Regardless of why, it’s clear they are tanking. “I don’t understand why” doesn’t refute the facts.

I refuse to believe any pro sports team tanks a season before it even starts.

Then what do you call it when your team stinks and you won’t sign players?
The patriots have intentionally chosen to not use 20% of the money they are allowed to spend on football players. If they only had a roster of 43 instead of 53 because they didn’t want waste their money on 10 more guys (and not the bottom 10 by the way) would that be more clear? They are doing exactly that, but with quality rather than quantity.

I don't agree with the approach but I would call it patience.

They should have been more aggressive especially at Tackle.

But just because they don't burn through every dime they have doesn't mean they are tanking.

They should have been more aggressive at every spot on the roster.
Every dime? They signed no one of significance and left 20% of the cap unspent.
I’ll rephrase. They valued saving money over putting the best team on the field. Which is tanking.

It's about motivation they saved money because they didn't feel the talent was worth the investment or in a few instances like Ridley or Aiyuk the talent didn't choose us. I do not think the lack of spending was about tanking for better picks.

And I believe if you look into you will find they were top ten in cash spending and in guaranteed dollars spent too. It just so happened they had a large enough cap space that they couldn't spend 50 mil in a way they felt was prudent.

Also I think Onwenwu, Dugger, and Peppers would take offense to you not considering them significant.

This team won’t be above .500 again for at least two years and that’s if mostly everything goes great: drafting incredibly well, Mayo coaches well and FAs want to play for him, draft picks turn into players that attract other players.
