Are Patriots Tanking or is this a “Bridge Year”?

Foles and Wentz did not show the ability to hit the high levels until they played behind the best offensive line in the league.

The same can be said for Jared Goff, he was written off as a salary dump to Detroit. They built arguably the best line in the NFL and nod suddenly Goff has magical abilities again.

A majority of fans attribute a lot of success by QB’s that is really the result of a great team around them. Put Brissett on Detroit and his numbers look similar to Goff. We saw that last season in Cleveland, he had a 146 QB Rating behind the Browns great line. Football is won in the trenches.
Wozzy with all due respect stop that's absurd. Repeat after me Brissett sucks!

Nick Foles and Carson Wentz are what… great… good? Give me a freaking break.

Nick Foles was a career journeyman backup like Jacoby, Wentz is damaged goods. The Eagles offensive line was the offensive star of that 2017 team.

Maybe Brissett move your needle but he makes mine flatline.

Goff, is and always has been, miles better than Jacoby even at whatever Jacoby's "prime" was.

If the LT position is a fiasco - as I think it is for this team - and there is no realistic way to markedly improve next year at that position through free agency or trades - and I don’t see anyone great projected to be there next FA - then I personally have no issue with them “tanking” this season to get their future LT1 in the draft rather than overspending and tying themselves to a mediocre player. I say that as a ST holder who loves going to the games but is not particularly excited to sit there watching them suck again

With that said, I can’t think of too many LTs in the league right now that I think are great players other than the aging Trent Williams. Ronnie Stanley is pretty good, so is Wirfs in TB and Armstead in Miami. The Pats can win without a great LT, if they have good enough coaching and elite talent elsewhere. They don’t have the elite talent and the jury’s out on their coaching.

So for me if they are not able to be competitive for the playoffs this year - and I simply don’t think they will be now with Judon gone and no Barmore - I’d rather see them drafting in the top 5 next spring looking at a potentially elite player. We will see whether someone like Will Campbell looks potentially elite but if he doesn’t or if he may not be available at their spot then I’d be happy to see them take anyone at literally any position that can perform at a higher level than the guys they have.
You should be able to get a good starting LT anywhere in the first. We probably should have used pick 33 on one this year. You dont tank for it. I don't even like that I said you tank for QBs because I hate that too but at least there is evidence of at least one team doing it for Luck.

Not sure if they are “tanking” I think it’s more of a complete lack of talent that will lead to a 3 win season.

Can't believe he's comparing Biscuit to Goff not even close.

Goff is no superhero by any means but to claim that a first overall pick who has led a team to a super bowl and has led a second team to the playoffs is equivalent to Jacoby is laughable. Swap Jacoby and Goff and the Lions aren't a playoff team.

Goff when he got traded from the Rams his reputation was in the toilet, everyone thought he stunk. Now behind one of the best lines in the NFL with good weapons he’s great. Sounds legit…

2013 Foles had an insane run. Not behind the best offensive line. Wentz was considered one of the most promising draft picks of the previous year

But Biscuit can make decent weapons look like trash a good or decent QB gotta have some cahoonas. Wozzy Biscuit is a downgrade from Mac Jones according real world stats.

He had one flash in the pan season under Chip Kelly running a college style offense, neither thing was sustainable.

He only had one season after that where he started double digit games and he's had an 11 year career. He's a career journeyman backup.

Brissett is better than Mac.

I get that you just saw him throw an interception in preseason and you're a victim of the moment, but Brissett has a career 1.4 interception percentage. he doesn't lead the league in turnovers the way Mac did as a starter. Real world stats...

He doesn't get his Team in the EZ either we ain't winning a lot of 10-7 ball games in 24.

Most thought he wasn't very good but he was still going to be the starting quarterback. Goff may have been, and to some extent still is, seen as a bridge guy but Goff even when traded was viewed as at least a 2-3 year bridge guy where Jacoby is viewed as a backup or a multi-game bridge guy at best.

No, he's not explosive, but not turning the ball over and still being able to matriculate the ball down the field is more important than explosive plays.

Tyquan is potentially an explosive player we haven't an explosive play in what seems like years on Offense.

Goff's career as a starter was over. They drafted Hendon Hooker with a knee injury last year so he could take over this season... now, not a single person is suggesting Hooker start. If a great O-Line and weapons can make a great QB like Mahomes play better, they most certainly will make a merely good QB like Goff play better. I don't understand how this is a controversial take.

They gave Goff a Four year extension.

They took Hooker last season which was Goff's third season in Detroit. They also drafted him knowing that his first year would be a redshirt season. Goff was always going to be the starter in Detroit for at least a year or two as they had no other viable starting quarterback on the roster. The last two seasons Goff has 59 TD's and over 9,000 passing yards. Hooker is going to have to wait another year or two, at least, if Goff stays healthy.
