I've been lucky enough to see all of the QB's mentioned in this thread other than Otto Graham and Sammy Baugh.

If I had to pick someone other than Brady I might go with Johhny Unitas, even though his numbers might not be as great as some of the others.

Also, a QB that never won a title that I consider great is Dan Marino. A defender could come in on him untouched and he'd still get his pass off with accuracy. He was as quick as they come.

The funny thing is, those two QB's had Don Shula as their HC for 18 years and they never won it all. The only time Shula won during his 33 years as a HC was when he joined the Dolphins after they were fined a 1st round pick and cash for tampering in 1970 to get him as their HC.

Don Shula is one of the most over rated HC's in the history of the NFL.

Shula was the original Asterjerk who went public with the idea that the Pats should get an asterisk if they went undefeated in 2007. His reason was the fact that the Pats lost a 1st round pick and were fined.

What the stupid prick forgot was that his Dolphins team also forfeited a 1st round pick and was fined in 1970 for breaking the tampering rules to get him as their HC. That led directly to his precious undefeated season and back to back SB wins the next two seasons.

Luckily for him some of his players piped in and reminded him of the facts so he shut his pie-hole.

ProFootballReference has a stat called Rate+ (or Passer Rating Index) that compares a QB's passer rating for a season to the league average passer rating that sason. It's not perfect - maybe everybody just sucked in a particular year - but in general it's a good way to adjust for era. It basically says how below or above average a guy was for a particular year. It's easy enough to interpret - league average is indexed to 100, so anything over 100 is above average.

There are only 5 QB seasons where they had a Rate + of >= 145 since the AFL-NFL merger. 1989 Montana, 1994 Young, 2004 Manning, 2007 Brady and 2011 Rodgers. As great as Mahomes has been this year, his Rate+ so far is "only" (lol) 133.

    For a more reasonable "good a long time" let's count guys with a Rate+ >= 110.

    Code:

Rk Player Draft From To Tm Count
    1 Drew Brees 2-32 2004 2018 LAC/NOR 14
    2 Tom Brady 6-199 2001 2017 NWE 13
    3 Peyton Manning 1-1 1999 2014 IND/DEN 13
    4 Brett Favre* 2-33 1992 2009 GNB/MIN 12
    5 Dan Marino* 1-27 1984 1996 MIA 9
    6 Joe Montana* 3-82 1981 1993 SFO/KAN 9
    7 Ken Anderson 3-67 1972 1983 CIN 8
    8 Dan Fouts* 3-64 1976 1985 SDG 8
    9 Aaron Rodgers 1-24 2008 2018 GNB 8
    10 Steve Young* 1-1 1991 1998 SFO 8
Not saying this "proves" anything, just something fun to look at that tries to adjust for era.

Bringing this back to what matters:

Players who have gone over 1,000 yards rushing in 2018:
    • Gurley 1,175
    • Elliot 1,150
    • Brady 1,000 (and he's lost 160 to kneel downs!)

I used to love watching Marino spin a ball. (Except when playing us)

For my money, John Elway on the move could throw the football across his body better than any passer I have ever seen. He couldn't get rid of the ball as quickly as Marino or Brady, but he could really turn that thing loose on the run.

That is an erroneous statement considering his win percentage will increase if the Pats win the next 4 games.

Neither one should be in the discussion. That's my whole point. The GOAT list should be really, really short.

But while we're on the subject, Elway was atrocious in three of those Super Bowls, and got blown out three times.

I cut my NFL teeth as a Cleveland Browns fan, remember Otto Graham, but the game is so different today from what it was then almost impossible to compare Graham to any of these great QB's of today...

Trying to compare QB stats makes no sense, as the NFL then was more of a running game... suspect that Brady and Manning would have been good in the 50's, but probably not as good as they are in the century, the game was so much more "physical" then..

YA Tittle kneeling on the field with blood pouring down his face.. imagine that today??

That’s an interesting context to passer rating but it is also inherently flawed with the ridiculous nature of passer rating and what people imply it indicates.
