The Cobb trade is so stupid from the standpoint of team needs and perfectly illustrates why they shouldn’t listen to a selfish ass who only cares about his personal stats.
They have one All-Pro, OPOY candidate in Davante Adams, who makes all the other receivers better with the well known Moss effect (well, I call it that, but really it’s every star skill player opens up the coverages for complementary players.)
They have two solid #2/#3 receivers in Valdes-Scantling and Lazard. These guys aren’t stars, but they were capable enough to support one of the best offenses in football. They just drafted another receiver, Amari Rodgers, in round 3.
So what does Cobb bring you with his price tag? Assuming he returns to form, which is an assumption, you upgrade from good #2 wide receiver to a very good #2 wide receiver. He mostly does the same thing as these bargain guys but a little better, assuming he isn’t washed.
They took a position of moderate strength, or maybe neutral, and slightly upgraded it.
This is exactly why the Packers smartly let Cobb walk to begin with. Adams is the stud; paying him and playing cheaper guys at #2/3 makes cap sense.
The Packers have some pretty big holes…this was so stupid. This is nothing like the Bucs acquiring Gronkowski (they were the only team he’d play for, though many teams would have wanted if he were available) or AB (dirt cheap, team struggled with depth after injuries and Watson fail.)
