If the 2017 League Cap is $165 Million then the Patriots would have around $35 million in cap space to improve the above roster. $35 million should be more than enough to do so and to have enough for regular season operating expenses.

Please note that the 2017 League Cap has not been announced nor it has been projected.

A team's cap space number is the difference between its total cap commitment and its adjusted cap number.

A team's 2017 adjusted cap number is the total of
1.) the 2017 League Cap (not yet announced or even projected by the NFL or NFLPA
2.) carryover from 2016 - not yet established but will determined by injuries and
number of NLTBE 46-man active roster bonuses.
3.) adjustments mostly from LTBE/NLTBE incentives (positive if total number of unearned LTBE incentives is greater than the total number of earned NLTBE incentives). Negative if opposite is true.

Do I think that all of the 2016 UDFAs will make the 2016 roster or be on the Patriots 2017 roster? Just wanted to have placeholder names.

Point of this post is to illustrate the 2017 Patriots should have more than enough cap space to keep a great deal of its core players.

Muchas gracias!

Bennett, Martellus 3,000,000

How?

Bennett, if he's as good as he's been and if he can make hay with the Pats offense so that they want to keep him, is going to cost a ton of $$$$$.

Great info. Thanks. One question. Where are you coming up with the $4 mil figure for Butler?

I really want Bennett extended but I would be shocked if he took a dime less than 7 million, and think he will be a really tough player to re-sign. He was unhappy with his deal with Chicago and that was at five million.

ok then. My main point remains. Trying to describe forest. Not going to quibble on trees

Point of this post is to illustrate the 2017 Patriots should have more than enough cap space to keep a great deal of its core players.

There are about a dozen players that need to be replaced including starters or almost starters: Blount, Vollmer, Amendola, Ninkovich, Long, Branch, Knighton, Ryan and Harmon (plus some more money to Bennett). Is it possible to get the 4 upgrades done for $25M or so? I suppose so, as long as our first two draft choices are OT's. Subtract $6M for a CB and $4M for Amendola and we have $15M for the rest. As I said, this is possible.

Shows a SB-level team for this year and next in extremely good cap health from my perspective. Even some wiggle room at the top with Solder if he has a great 2016 they could knock that down with a 2-year extension. Forest/trees is a perfect analogy. So to foray into the trees...

I really want Bennett extended but I would be shocked if he took a dime less than 7 million, and think he will be a really tough player to re-sign. He was unhappy with his deal with Chicago and that was at five million.
I think you're probably going to be right, but in truth we have no idea yet what Bennett's role in NE looks like or what it would be worth in contract terms. In that respect there is a lot to be gained on both sides. Marty has a lot to gain from beasting out as TE2 to show off for a big deal, and NE has a lot to gain from showing him how much fun it can be to win which might get them a good price for maaaaybe a little less. TE2 is basically a zero, backup, scrub role on most of teams in the league. This is the team that once dropped about $100m in TEs in one offseason. All things considered, I think NE as an organization has a great situation for 2016 as they have a fair price for a potentially offense-shaping TE2, a Gronk-lite backup in case of injury, and no long-term commitment along with it. And if Marty is so awesome that NE has to let him go because they win the SB and the FA offers are just too huge, I could live with that. Takeaway being, the fun part is that we get to see it all play out soon. Should be great, might be meh, could be bad, who knows?

You had 35 mil leftover for anyone who insists on quibbling.
