The Pats are tight against the cap. According to Overthecap they will be approximately 2 million in the red after 51 are signed plus the draft picks. NFL Salary Cap Space | Over The Cap

Jonnu Smith is too expensive to divorce. Does it make sense to convert guaranteed salary into signing bonus and spread the pain out? Keep him this season and If he clicks in 2022 all the better to keep him employed.

Clever maneuver by BB moving down to 29 from 21 saving the Pats 400K on the 2022 cap and 2 million over the life of the Strange contract.

How many tomes does Miguel need to post that at least $20M of cap money is easily available. without cutting or trading anyone? They are several possible restructures. In addition, the team might seek to extend players.
So youre sayin that youre fine keeping Agahlor here even though it might cut into Thortons play time.

Agahlor is the 2nd highest paid Patriot and Smith 3rd. Seems like an obvious place to trim dead weight.

Extending Bailey saves some - since they left Carmada and Ariaza on the board, I assume they've already talked to him. Cutting Harry saves a little, while trading him saves 1.1 million.

The could extend Godchaux or Agholor to lower the cap hits.

They can simply restructure Judon to more than cover their needs.

The won't cut Agholor and EAT 10 million. But if they find a trade partner, they could do that, eat 5 million, save 10, and get something back.

What I said was that cutting Agholor was in no way necessary to save cap money.

The idea that Thornton is so great that we should cut Agholor to give him more reps is beyond ridiculous.

THAT BEING SAID,
I am fine with trading one of our WR's late in camp, if the remaining 4 are working out, and are all healthy. Of course, that could be either Agholor or Myers. Both are in their contract years. Ideally, the player not traded would then be extended.

Just BTW, how much will Myers be used with a corp of Parker, Bourne, Thornton, Henry and White as receiving targets? IMO, it's not about cap room. I think that Agholor adds more to the quality of our offense than Myers. As an aside, I would keep all five, certainly until August 1st.

I'd force Jonnu & Nelson to restructure their contracts and add another year (which will never get exercised)

Aghalor could be really good in his 2nd year. He is an experienced veteran with speed who knows the playbook. The rookie Thornton is going to take some time to gel. Rookie wrs hardly ever have a big impact in year 1

The Patriots have ZERO leverage over either of them.

They could offer Agholor an extension (not a restructure, as he's on his last year), and if they tried to cut Smith this year, he and his agent would say, "Cool!" and he'd walk away with a total of $31,250,000 for one year of service as an unrestricted Free Agent - and one who wouldn't even be attached to a compensatory draft pick when he signed with someone else.

Of course, you don't mean "restructure", which involves turning salary into bonus and spreading over the same time period. Compensation is the same for the player.

You seem to mean that somehow you can force Agholor or Smith to sign a new contract more to your liking. that simply won't happen. As was pointed out, Belichick could negotiate to extend contracts with eith or both, if a deal could be reached that benefited both.

Which requires players to agree. What if they don't?

A player is free not to take his salary as a bonus, and to thus risk not getting the money if he is injured. I don't recall a play refusing, but he certainly is allowed to do so.
They may want something more though.

None of those guys played for the Pats, who's playbook is written in Hieroglyphics.
Its throwing a ball and catching it. How many ways can you run from point A to point B?

Kraft called out the drafting and the 2022 post season expectations. The only other NE WR plans to improve are Harry breaking out, Agahlor earning his keep and Parker staying on the field. I fathom that Thorton is the NE deep threat and that he was not drafted that high to play special teams. McDaniels is gone and the people replacing him arent Offensive Masterminds.
