Barwin - Just to watch the board explode.

Connor Barwin signs with the Eagles.

1) Ed Reed (I don't care if he's a FS, he could probably move to SS just fine and would be a great playmaker and leader for this defense. Too bad he's signing with Houston.)
2) Aqib Talib (need that lockdown corner and there's nobody on the market I'd rather have... other than Revis and we know that's never happening.)
3) Nnamdi Asomugha (I've memorized his name and everything, lol. Sign him, whether he's paired with Talib or on his own.)
4) Sebastian Vollmer (find a way to bring him back)
5) James Harrison (may seem like an odd fit but he brings some mean streak to the defense.)

ok my list is junk now that reed is about to sign with houston and Aso has about 4 teams lining up

I would have liked Kennan Lewis and Michael Bennett. Given both were signed to affordable contracts, I have to think something is brewing behind the scenes for New England. If not, there's going to be a lot of unhappy Patriots fans in the coming months given the needs that must be addressed with quality opposed to jags.

I don't think anything is brewing behind the scenes. just looking to save their $$ if they don't feel the player is worth it. Unhappy fans in a few months? look at the forum...everyone thinks we are done this season...

If nothing is done to address the team's weaknesses then I would tend to agree with the posters who believe the sky has fallen.

At present, the team has addressed one area of need on Special Teams. I don't believe they are silly enough to penny pinch for next season given the difficulty in winning the Superbowl in any given year. As it stands Seattle, San Francisco and Denver all look formidable. Luckily, there is plenty of time to make moves.

Denver can sign everyone...they still have manning as their QB...not MR. Postseason. Seattle and SF..who cares..in NFC

That's small minded thinking if ever I saw it. Who cares? San Francisco and Seattle have taken steps forward and are well placed to compete with and beat the Patriots in the postseason. Denver has taken steps forward and a major one by signing Welker that will exploit a weakness on D.

The team needs to get better. There is time to do that, but right now and given the affordable contracts that have been handed out (especially on D) I am left scratching my head as to what the actual plan is.

yeah who cares...they have to make the SB first to play the pats...so either one of them are going to make it right?

Lewis was going to NO no matter what. He apparently took a hometown discount to move back there.

Bennett is a guy a would have liked, but if he's only getting $5M, then the Freeney/Umenyiora/Abraham group is going to be dirt cheap.

Carry on with your small minded thinking. I'd prefer to look at the changing face of power in the NFL landscape and the Patriots position to compete with that change.

2013 NFL free agency - Five unsigned free agents who could shift league's balance of power - ESPN

Article written mentioning 5 deals that "should" happen based on need and skill set.
Field Yates:
1. CB Asomugha - speculates the Saints
2. LB Dansby - speculates the Texans
3. OT Vollmer - speculates the Eagles
4. DE Abraham - speculates the Patriots
5. CB Winfield - speculates the Seahawks

I'd love it if the Patriots signed 2 out of those 5. It honestly doesn't even matter all that much to me which 2.

I'd guess the likelihood would be Abraham & Vollmer... All of the names are sexy.

Which 1 or 2 out of those 5 would be your favorites if you assume salaries are roughly the same?

Note: Mods please feel free to edit if I've overstepped the bounds of quoting content that is behind a pay wall.

Talib - signed
Seabass
Julian Edelman
Elvis Dumervil
Richard Seymour

Besides our own UFAs (Vollmer, Edelman, Lloyd), I want:
2 of WRs Danario Alexander, DHB, Laurent Robinson, David Nelson, Kevin Walter, Domenik Hixon;
1 of CBs Brent Grimes, Antoine Winfield, EJ Biggers, Sheldon Brown;
1 of DEs Elvis, Osi, Freeney, Abraham;
and 1 of OG/Cs Kevin Boothe, Antoine Caldwell, Chris Spencer, Doug Legursky.

Talib - Signed
Welker - Gone
Vollmer
A. Wilson - Signed
Dumerville/Abraham/Freeny

Edelman
Sanders
DHB
Vollmer
Asomugha if we can afford it.

Given what's out there now, I'd take:

1.) Abraham
2.) Winston
3.) Sanders via offer sheet

Call it a day and hit the draft. Oh, and re-sign Edelman.
