2025 LT

I'd have to be a scout with absolutely no say in personnel
I'd take Director of College Scouting with responsibilities for drafting. But I'd be hopeless trying to calculate player values for FA and trades at the pro level.

I think you do very well. I really enjoy your posts.
When in college, my coach let me help breakdown film. I was not good enough to play, so I was trying to get my foot into the football coaching world. Decided it wasn't for me and went into the military. But watching film Is one of my favorite things do to.

Interesting that other than a meeting at the combine, the Pats don't appear to have shown any interest in Charles Grant from William & Mary. Is he a clean prospect that doesn't need a follow up or do they consider him a bad fit as he's projected as a zone blocking LT? I have to think that as a former wrestler, he should get some consideration for a gap scheme.

I would think so as well, but I am not sure he would anchor well against NFL DL, he is pretty lean. He is also not football strong currently and his hands are pretty bad in timing and placement. I have only watched 2 games though so maybe I caught bad games, although he dominated the competition.

He is very raw and I think there would be better OT choices, but they should still have the conversation unless Marone has decided its too much work. lol

Just saw that Mike Tice has Josh Conerly as his #1 OT

Was listening to the podcast just now. Couple notes:

No issues with Campbell's length. His actual question is with his strength. Also doesn't like the upright stance, but some coaches teach that.

He likes Membou better than Campbell. Says that he has agility and you could try him out at LT. But, he's struggled with quickness off the edge on the right side, so that would only be magnified at LT. Also has questions about "grit." Says he doesn't always finish plays.

Likes Banks as a tackle, cites His athleticism and his ability to get in space on WR screens. Praised his ability. Likes him better than Campbell, up with Membou.

Likes Simmons a lot. More than Campbell. More than Membou. Praises his agility, smooth athlete. Like Banks, has the ability to get out in space and block, specifically mentions ability on screens and short passes. True left tackle.

Conerly is his top lineman. Loves his all around game. All the traits of a premier tackle. Good hands, good feet. Praised Oregon's OL coach for his development. Only wart is a narrow base in the run game.

My take is he has it ranked Conerly, Simmons, Banks/Membou, Campbell. Didn't explicitly say who was better between Banks or Membou, but does say Banks can play LT. And considering he praised and placed Conerly and Simmons higher because they're no doubt LT's, I'd assume he has Banks at 3.

Not retired yet.

I've watched (i do at least 3-5 games of A22 for 99% of prospects) a little under a 100 prospects so far. Most likely not doing many more (I'm hoping to grade 125-150 guys this year). I'll post a few stickys by the end of this next week with some thoughts. Looking like 5-8 first round grades though in a weak class.
cant wait

Every mock and big board has Conerly going after all those other guys. Interesting new viewpoint here.

It'd be great to move up to 24 and pick one of those guys. I doubt any make it to 38.

I doubt any of them fall that far, as well. MAYBE Simmons, but that's only because of info we just dont have access to. The medicals, and the rumors that McShay alluded to about his maturity. Talent wise, even with the injury, he should be gone.

Me personally, i do think Ersery is in that group. He's the most likely to be available at 38. Some have him falling to the 3rd, although i don't know how that happens. If its Carter/Hunter and Ersery, it's a home run for me.

But i definitely agree that moving up would be better. Get one of the true, unquestioned left tackles. I'm fine giving up a 3 and one of the later picks if necessary to get up there.

I agree but doubt a true LT like Conerly or Simmons makes it to #20. Ersery falling to the 3rd seems absurd to me too. Certain positions, QB, WR1, LT always are over drafted because there are so few and none in FA. Tough to get a good LT without being top 20, but we only need someone better than Lowe so maybe anyone in R3 would be OK? LOL

9 minutes of Logan Brown blocking goodness. I am really struggling to see why he hasn't got more traction. I think he needs to sit and learn for a year, but I do believe there is a quality future starting left or right tackle here. He plays with a really nasty demeanour, just doesn't get pushed back at all and gets good drive as a run blocker. I really do think he's very good.

I just wish I could see him go up against proper SEC type defenders in a more pro orientated offense to get a better feel.

Seems to have some very good traits. What round is he projected? By watching him I would think 5th round, but could be way off. I have seen you mention his but have not dug in.

5th is about right. I'd take him a round earlier probably.

Vrabel is at the Ohio State pro day rather than LSU.

Yeah, I don't care how much Simmons can bench, the only thing that really matters is his knee. I'm already on record about his breakout against poor competition during the season, but the knee scares me even more than that. I see he didn't do any testing other than the bench, which means his knee isn't close to 100% yet.

EDIT:

So I did find this snippit:

"As aforementioned, Simmons wasn’t able to do a lot of on-field work Wednesday because of the season-ending knee injury he suffered in October. But the fact that he was able to do anything at all just five months removed from tearing his patellar tendon was a big win for his draft stock.

Simmons spent a couple of minutes going through movement drills in front of NFL scouts before Donovan Jackson and Josh Fryar took the field for a full offensive line workout. While Simmons’ workout was abbreviated, his movement didn’t appear to be hindered during his drill work, which should be greatly reassuring to teams considering drafting him with a first-round pick."

So who knows.

Even with the bum knee and rumors about his demeanor, no way he lasts past the top 15 IMHO. At worst he’ll go after Campbell, Membou, and Banks and before Conerly and Ersery. Anyone know his arm length (I do, just being rhetorical here)?

Other than QB, there is no position sought by the NFL more than LT. Year in and year out 4 - 6 go Day 1. The Titans and Saints of the league have first round guys they drafted Day 1 a couple years ago (Skowronski and Penning) and did it again the very next year (Latham and Fuaga).

This problem has to be fixed by coaching a lot more than drafting. That’s why as much as I’m anxious to see this addressed I still want the elite guy rather than the reach guy.

Saw rumours on twitter today that the Colts are looking at LT in the first round too.

There are maybe 6-7 OTs that might be considered day 1 starters: Campbell, Banks, Membou, Simmons, Conerly, Ersery and maybe Donovan Jackson. After we draft at 4 there are at least 8 teams that could go OT. My question is Do we take Hunter/carter if there or take a OT? If we do not take the OT then we really need to hope that someone wants to let us trade up. I just don't feel comfy with Hope.

It really feels like we are going to play Russian roulette in this draft. I am preparing myself to start the season with Lowe, Wallace, Jacobs and a developmental OT. Tyron Smith or DJ Humphries might be able to provide some stability while the youngsters try and train up. Its also possible that McD decides that he can give the LT enough help that he won't be a liability.
