That was just amazingly bad, wasn't it? I had thought that in time the defense would adapt to Covington's approach, to his manner of coaching or to whatever changes he might make in the schemes. I no longer think that is the case. Even with generous allowance for the injuries, the defense is, well, indefensibly awful: sloppy in meeting individual responsibilities, indifferent as to the fundamentals, incapable of in-game adjustments, *****ing about one another, seemingly ill-conditioned, only intermittently committed to their work. ALL of this is attributable to coaching.
I would attribute the failures of the offense first to the dismal quality of the roster, making Wolfe the top culprit for that unit. To my eye, given his failings under both Belichick and Mayo, Wolfe's performance has been so dismal that he should be let go immediately. We need - yet again, for f's sake - to start over rebuilding the roster. Step one is getting rid of this preening nepo punk. As for Van Pelt, he obviously lacks the skill to devise a game plan, to make in-game adjustments, to capitalize on the particular skills of individual players, and so on. He may or may not make a suitable QB coach for Drake May, but to this point he is not working out as OC. I would give him the rest of the year, but barring a very surprising change in his approach, I would anticipate he will be a one-and-done.
I have probably posted too much about Mayo, so I'll skip the details, but to this point his tenure is an obvious bust. The team is by any reasonable standard or metric in a state of failure. It is the worst team in the league, and - ironically enough for a HC who claims to value "culture" and "relationships" - the team is falling apart as a group of men capable of and willing to work together. I would in fairness give Mayo the remainder of the season to show what he can do, but I would expect, again barring unlikely major changes in his approach, Mayo also to be out at season's end.
How did it come to this? Simple. The Krafts chose not to have a legitimate, professional hiring process after rightly letting Bill go, and this is the result: an inexperienced and incompetent coaching and front office staff. They got lazy, sloppy, inattentive, cheap; apparently thinking that ditching Bill would magically put things right. The worst offense, of course, was permitting Robert's silly infatuation with Jerod as a charming travel companion determine who would lead the rebuild of their team. I am not one who has complained much about the Krafts in the past, but clearly it is time for change there as well. I don't know if Johnathan can do the job, but it is clear, I take no delight in saying, that Robert no longer can.
I am aware that this post sounds like an indulgence in bomb-throwing, but I think that this is a reflection not so much of my animus or curmudgeonly ways as it is of the team's obvious failings, or so I imagine..
Bump.
Because it’s the Truth. All of it.
