DRAFT 2022 PTP Draft Board / Pats Draft Talk

Just a headcase. At work but I'd be shocked if he's here. Watch it happen lol but honestly I'd be surprised. He's been suspended a few times a believe. He's got into with position coaches. It was a chore for Kirby to get him in line. Let's DB's in his head way to easy. Just dumb immature stuff that never stops. Switched schools last minute which isn't a huge deal but shows in indecision and again it's been a pattern. Saban stopped going after him to go to Bama. His dad played in the league was a nut. Again I'd be shocked if he was here but who knows.
Oh man that's sad to hear I think Pickens is going to be a Impact Rookie I think he's that talented. Knowing his bad character issues might make him fall he would still be the other half to a double dipping at the position. Cant have all choir boys right? We don't live in a perfect world. Do you know if the Patriots brass interviewed Pickens?

They were at his pro day. I still like him. He got suspended for things like fighting on the field, etc. I think he's a bit of a hothead, but he doesn't seem like a bad kid, just passionate. I'm glad my current employer doesn't judge me on my college behavior, haha. I wasn't out of line, but I didn't always display good judgement in my teens and twenties. He's fun to watch.

Most young men settle into life. Some don't - AH and AB. Sometimes hard to tell.

Idk you guys tell me ... not to mention his position coaches and others have got into with him a few times off the field. Don't get me wrong I want to be very clear and I've said this as much. Pickens isn't a "bad guy" just an immature hothead with patterns since HS. How much of this will automatically disappear and how much of this will Bill put up with. Not to mention you probably don't want your WR throwing closed fist punches into a helmet. I love Pickens personally. That's no surprise, I alwats love these types, personally. But looking at it through a NEP lens plays different. We'll see.

Hit 'em up still bangs today. Those first lines with his voice

Idk I think judging college kids is exactly what we're supposed to do lol. It's harsh and at times feels like nitpicking but that's the business. You're not waiting a few years or putting them in etiquette school. Your trying to figure out how this young person will perform and handle themselves over a course of time. So I get what your saying but we both know these kids are being put under the microscope here.

I envied having players like Ward on the Steelers and Smith on the Panthers. If Pickens is that motivated with an edge, okay. I just don't want a hotheaded crybaby when things aren't going so well. He might add something to practice too. Get those DBs a little salty.

Yup there's a fine line for sure. You want a few guys like Spikes and Mankins. Or Ward and Smith. There's levels to this though and from what I saw Pickens let's his emotions get the best of him too often. Like you have to have a plan with that stuff. You can't allow guys to get in your head. Your like 6'5 you should be loving it when guys retaliate on you. Not want to prove how tough you are beating on a DB who's like 4-5 inches smaller. And as a result you're missing next week's game. That wouldn't play here. Neither would squirting water on a player on the sidelines. Now like I mentioned above I love that stuff personally. I love seeing guys do dumb stuff and be petty but when I look at it from a Patriots lens I see things differently.

It sucks and I've said this before but Pickens is exactly what we need from a skill-set pov. It's just everything else that says no to me but we'll see. I've been wrong before.

A Steve Smith would have a field day with someone like Pickens. That's the difference I think you're highlighting. Talib was the precipice of a bit too hot-headed (not a huge liability by any means) and Smith embarrassed the living hell out of him. Pickens is the dude who you can just pick on (pun intended) and it actually be a strategy. Lots of CB's in the NFL who would make his job difficult, and that's before they start ribbing him.

Could you imagine a young hot head with a mouth on him who hasn’t proven **** in the league poppin off in that locker room? It’s interesting to think about. Who would put him in his place and straighten him out? I could see guys like McCourty and Slater having mature conversations with him. Come at it from an angle where they talk to him and treat him with respect. Man to man so to speak. But, who in that locker room would scare a guy straight? Do we even have those guys anymore? I guess I haven’t thought about it in some time. I could see Barmore being that type of guy, but is he there yet among his peers? Have any of you heard of any of the younger guys with that type of edge, any recent stories?

*EDIT* I guess what I’m trying to say is who are our junkyard alpha dogs?

Thanks: Pickens reminds me of better version Malcolm Mitchell and he was going to be good. I think Pickens is the kind of Receiver who threatens the entire field. He gives DB's no downs off.

Gustsy draft JMC00 definitely build up
our Front 7. But I think some would be a little nervous with us taking WR and CB so late. Also we have too many young Edges on our current roster that needs to step up. That said JoshPascal plays the run extremely well I see why one would like him.

My bets are Andrews and Lawrence Guy. Though, as I pointed out to someone else, with the legal BS of this day and age, scaring the "pi$$" out of a guy is much harder if not impossible to do because the moment you put a hand on him, he's going to the Union and demanding grievance.

Only thing I like about this draft is Davis. Ignoring LB is a mistake.. And I don't see the point of double dipping at WR with what the Patriots currently have. It makes zero sense. And especially not those two.

Gray is borderline 7th round/UDFA and Drummond is Meyers Part 2 except less agile (4.46 Shuttle is bad for a WR.). Who's spots are you taking for them? In all honesty, I'd rather go with Nixon and Wilkerson than waste draft picks on those two..

I thought maybe Andrews as well. Guy never even entered my mind. Which is weird, because that dude definitely has crazy eyes.

Mike Reiss reached out to Jim Nagy, the Senior Bowl director who used to be a Patriot scout. Here are his views on PTP at certain positons:

  • Nagy's fit -- Chad Muma(Wyoming). "He made a really nice jump from junior tape; we moved him up the board considerably this year. He has a nose for the football and is always around it. He can run and is athletic enough to play in space -- a three-down 'backer who is super smart and really productive. We had [Wyoming's] Logan Wilsonat the Senior Bowl a couple years ago and we saw what he did this year in the Super Bowl -- if Cincinnati wins that game, he might have been MVP. In reaching out to Logan during the fall about Chad, he said they always knew he was going to be good because he hit the ground running and knew how to work and prepare. When I heard Logan talk about the makeup part of it with Chad, it screamed ‘Patriot’ to me."

  • Nagy's fit -- Bo Melton (Rutgers). "You saw his ability to get open here in Mobile. He's quick and fast, and he also proved that at the combine [4.34 seconds in the 40-yard dash]. You put on the tape and the first thing you like is his toughness and his play-strength with the ball in his hands. In the one-on-ones [at the Senior Bowl], you saw the stuff at the top of the route, the releases, just that suddenness that's always worked [for former Patriots receivers] whether it's Troy Brown or Wes Welker or Julian [Edelman]. I think the next step he needs to take is catching the football in traffic and being a little more consistent that way."

  • Nagy's fit -- Zion Johnson (Boston College) and Cole Strange (UT-Chattanooga). "I think Zion is a slam-dunk Pro Bowl player. He reminds me of Rodney Hudson. They'd have to take him at [pick No.] 21 -- a Damien Woody-type [No. 17 in 1999] in that BC wheelhouse -- and that's not too rich. I think his best position is center, because you'd be wasting his brain playing him at guard -- he's highly, highly intelligent. Work ethic is off the charts. With Cole, I think he will be a second-round pick, maybe a third. Great-looking, trim, good athlete. We invited him to the Senior Bowl based on his Kentucky game alone; Kentucky has two guys on the defensive line that are going to be drafted and he just wore them out. He's physical. Really strong hands. A really tenacious player."

  • Nagy's fit -- Marcus Jones (Houston). "I think he's a Patriots fit because of the versatility. He's played outside, nickel, safety and receiver this year. And he's an All-American returner who can do both [punts and kickoffs] and should be able to do that right away. He's very much like Troy Brown, just more slanted [toward] defense. He's a fun player to watch -- a lot of energy, a lot of burst. One of the highest compliments you can give a DB is that he's just a 'baller' -- you can stick him anywhere. He's sticky in coverage, can mirror anyone, so he's going to be a really good slot. But he has the speed to match up outside as well, and I know they've played with undersized guys up there, like Jonathan Jones."

New England Patriots' needs are glaring, and these NFL draft prospects could help

Yea I get what you're saying. Judon, Dugger, Phillips, DMC but we could use another one or two.

Yes this is exactly what I'm saying. He's entering a league full of guys that are wolves in that respect. I suspect he can handle himself in a lot of cases but he has to really really bring that stuff in and use it to his team's advantage. Not pop off to prove a point. Bill loves him some guys that are nuts. LT is the perfect example. Two things though A)you better be damm good at your job. Not good but great. He'll put up with some stuff but to a point and then you're traded to Cleveland or Minnesota like Collins and Moss. Again he's flexible and will even take guys back but there's a limit. B) be a nut. Put some fear in the other side but don't hurt your team. Flags, suspension etc don't play here

I really don't have a problem with George. I love the crazy ones. Hell I'm on of the only one that usually likes that stuff here lol. It's just from a NEP lens but I'm wrong all the time. From a skill set pov he's what we need here although he does have issues with press and gets pushed around in route once and a while.

New England Patriots' needs are glaring, and these NFL draft prospects could help

Marcus Jones has been one of my binkies for a while now.

Tiny (5’8”, 174) but has definite slot potential in the NFL. 2021 Paul Hornung Award winner, as the most versatile player in college football.

Didn’t run the 40 at the combine, so his 40 yard dash and agility times at the Houston pro day will likely play a major role in his draft projection. If you are that small, you better be lightning fast/quick.

In addition to being a developmental slot guy, he would immediately feel a huge hole in the return game.
